Anderson Varejao

What could have been? Boozer, AV, and Z upfront would have been fun and a very talented frontcourt.

Would we have gone after AV if Boozer didn't ditch?

I think Paxson would've and probably would've paid those two seconds for his rights. Orlando had Dwight, so not a lot of minutes for AV.

Imagine Boozer in his prime. Z. AV. Battie making up Z. LeBron. Maybe using cap space for a smart free agent get like Raja Bell at the 2. Would've needed to find a PG, but could've built a real title contender. Paxson would've come out of that looking good, but he kept blowing the draft, though I doubt he would've traded for Welsch had he kept Boozer.

He kept blowing away the draft and throwing away his firsts in trades. Really only the AV move was a good move that was directly due to him

The sasha trade is still baffling. He just drafted another wing in the same draft. Won't bother with the Welsh fiasco as well

You know what I just realized? Every GM in Cavalier history besides Chris Grant has thrown away first rounders like they were nothing.

Don't recall Embry throwing away picks. I hated the Ferry deal but there is no doubt he was a good GM

Just curious what you guys think Andy might be willing to resign for after next season? He'll be 32, so a limited role and limited money would be best, but he would still be a nice piece to bring off the bench for the next few years. Would he take 10 mil over 3 years?

Assuming he's still a starter this year I can't imagine us signing him that cheap. 15-20M for 3 seems reasonable.

I'm banking on him agreeing to a hometown discount now that LeBron is back. This franchise has been good to Varejao, and he's played his entire career here. Does he really want to go elsewhere now that we have a legit chance of winning a title? He'll be thirty-three when the 1015/16 season starts (aka when his new contract begins) and he has had one reasonably healthy season the past four years. It's time to give us a discount.

Unless something changes, he probably will be the starter this year, and depending on performance maybe he would deserve that much. However, I would rather see him transition into a bench role for us, and then use the Haywood contract to acquire a new starting center going forward.

I know he won't leave, especially with LeBron here and us being better, but I just hope he is willing to sign for a reasonable deal. I'm guessing he'll probably get more like 12 mil over 3 for being a good soldier through it all, but much more than that and I think he would be getting overpaid.

I'm assuming that

A. Signing Andy to a 6M/year contract won't affect out ability to bring in another big using the Hayward contract (pretty sure it won't?).

B. Andy stays reasonably healthy, playing 60+ games again this year.

C. Andy's level of play doesn't fall off a cliff.

If all those things happen, then signing Andy for 3-4M/year seems like a real skinflint move. His impact on the court is certainly worth more than that, and with the wins rolling in I don't think Dan would mind giving Andy his fair market value.

His play might not fall off a cliff the following season, but once he gets to 35 or 36 do you really want to pay the guy 6 mil a season? Listen, I have loved Andy and everything he does for this team, but we shouldn't be paying him like a sixth or seventh man when he is our fourth big, especially since Tristan will basically be taking over his role as the energy big in the future, and will most likely get paid 7 or 8 mil a year to do it. I know Dan will pay, but you can't be stupid with your money since you'll already be paying Kyrie, LeBron, and most likely Love huge money.

Slap a team option on that third year if you're worried about his health. But this is a guy who was by some measures our best player last season. It's hard to imagine Tristan surpassing him anytime soon (although I would love for Tristan to finally have that breakout season). Going forward, 6 mil a season for a high-quality 3rd big is a fine value.

If we trade for Love, we really need to do something about the center position. I'm not sure Love and Varejao is the most ideal frontcourt pairing...their passing would be a thing of beauty, but I think they'll get in each other's way for rebounds. They tend to cover the same ground. If we can pick up a young rim protecting C as a starter and have Varejao come off the bench, that would be ideal IMO.

That be nice. We're lucky we have so many assets going forward so there's reason to be confident we'll find someone to fill that hole. In the short term TT could play some center, Varejao or a FA big could eat up the backup center minutes. Waiting on a big to become available by the deadline or next offseason would my preference. That is if we can't get one back from Minnesota.
