In the 10 teamer there wasn't a single early round pick that didn't make any sense. One could argue Megatron at #3 was a bit of a leap but the reality is that if you want him you have to get him in the first, regardless of where you pick.
I've been sticking with the RB/RB/WR/WR/QB route for years now and it almost always guarantees playoffs. In the 14 teamer I had to go WR/RB/WR/QB and I feel like it fucked me up.
I altered my strategies quite a bit this year and I think I ended up with much better teams as a result. One of my issues in years past is that I was always susceptible to "group think," wherein if a bunch of people starting drafting QBs I would grab one too. Same with defense and kickers. I dropped that mentality this year and just did what I planned on going into the drafts, which was to not really worry about defenses and kickers at all and not to address QB until I had my starting RBs and WRs. If I had played it like I normally do, I would have grabbed a QB in the second/third of my snake draft after so many went before I selected and I think my team would have been much worse as a result.
Obviously auctions are a bit of a wild card, and my first auction team this year isn't as good as my second one primarily because I went into the second one with a more aggressive attitude as a result of my perceived failings in the first one. I still think the first one is a good team, but I left some money on the board that could have gotten me another elite player because I was too conservative early. Of course, the counter to that is that my depth suffered a bit in the second one, but as I've learned in past auctions it's better to have several elite players and a mediocre bench than it is to just be good across the board. The latter always ends up losing games to the former when you really need a win. I'd rather roll the dice on Megatron, Charles, and Julio winning me a few weeks by themselves than hoping a bunch of 10-20 RBs all play solid all year. Now I can just sit back and wait for injuries to derail my season.
Thankfully, the good auction was the $100 buy-in.
