Anthony Bennett

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What I seen tonight/yesterday Is what I expected to see from him... I do not care If he scores 10pts a game just show flashes of that explosiveness Instead of just jump shots. He fought hard for rebounds and he looked like he belonged. Yes he did make a few doh plays but I will not hold it against him. He will be starting sooner than later because I feel T.T will be traded. Unless we draft another PF for some reason.

I'll be waiting for Cosmo and Rich to tell us that the Cavs used the cool 3D graphics from Z's retirement game to hide a trampoline in the key for Anthony Bennett to jump off because it's impossible for him to jump like that.

AB's already throw down some great dunks, no one's ever doubted his dunking ability. The whole issue is the other aspects of his game, but for me he didn't look bad defensively tonight. I'd say he was at least better than Hawes.

It was just nice to see him out there to know that knee injury isn't going to linger into the summer. We can have one of the best PF combinations in the NBA with Tristan and AB next year. They just both need to work on their games all summer and be ready to go this fall. The Cavs can't afford to put those trampolines under the floor every game next year, right Ed?

Having one of them long-term basically seals the fate of the other. Not enough minutes to go around considering both of them can only play PF.

I'd agree with this after next year when Tristan's rookie deal is up, and we've seen AB play for another full year. Hopefully it's a much harder decision than it would be now.

Pretty much all these numbers mean is that he played better than the bench bigs on other teams. Still, I'll take that after his awful start to the season. I just don't think he gave us that much to be excited about. Hopefully he makes a huge jump in the offseason.

Anthony Bennett: 'I Could've Been a Whole Lot Better' This Season

By Stephen Babb , Featured Columnist Apr 17, 2014

There's no shortage of pressure associated with being the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. Just ask the Cleveland Cavaliers' Anthony Bennett, who's living through the aftermath of a season that was disappointing by any metric.

Fox Sports Ohio's Sam The Bullshit Whisperer reports that the rookie felt he underachieved before finishing the season out against the Brooklyn Nets: "I've learned a lot. Obviously, I could've been a whole lot better."

The numbers seem to suggest as much.

In just 12.7 minutes per game, Bennett averaged 4.1 points and 2.9 rebounds in 51 games. Some of the blame has to go to head coach Mike Brown, who kept Bennett from seeing any meaningful and consistent action in the Cavs' rotation.

Bennett missed significant time in March with a strained left knee, but his struggles began long before that.

As early as October, Pro Basketball Talk's Kurt Helin noted Bennett's conditioning issues and expressed intrigue at the fact the Cavs took him with the first pick without having seen him in action a bit more:

Part of the reason it was a surprise Anthony Bennett was the No. 1 overall pick is that nobody had seen him workout (sic) — he had shoulder surgery and did not go through the NBA Draft Combine, or do pre-draft workouts this season.

After that he couldn’t play in Summer League either. So maybe it’s not a shock he’s got some conditioning issues to start the season.

ormer star point guard Gary Payton was less diplomatic about those conditioning issues (per NESN's Nicholas Goss): "You need to be in the gym before the gym opens, you should be there after the gym closes. You came in overweight. You look fat … Get in shape, get ready, you need to prove yourself."

With conditioning slowing his start to the season and injury curbing his ability to finish strong, Bennett never had much of an opportunity to show what he can do. The Cavs spent most of the season trying to prove itself a playoff team to no avail, leaving precious few minutes to develop young talent like Bennett.

It didn't help that Cleveland had a number of bigs ahead of Bennett in the rotation—namely Tristan Thompson, Spencer Hawes and Anderson Varejao.

Going forward, it's not exactly clear where Bennett fits in with the Cavs. Should he lose some weight and add some quickness, he could see some minutes at small forward, where Cleveland could certainly use some extra help.

Otherwise, Bennett will continue to battle for minutes—much as Derrick Williams initially had to do with the Minnesota Timberwolves. In Williams' case, the logjam ultimately resulted in the former No. 2 pick getting traded to the Sacramento Kings. If the Cavaliers look to add some veteran presence in pursuit of the playoffs, Bennett could become a similar casualty.

I'm sure he'll look great if he doesn't eat all of that popcorn :chuckles:

He was playing against starters for a lot of those minutes as well. He was able to show that he belongs in the NBA with his performance over the second half the season. I can't control how you feel, but I'm excited about what next year has in store for him.

Highlight of the night yesterday was seeing AB. It was so important for him and his confidence to finish strong and I'm glad he did. Give this guy a structured off season plan to work on weight, skills, and conditioning and we may have something. He's already gone through the worst of it (media coverage) so some of the pressure should be off. Unlike Derrick Williams, there was no Kyrie in Bennett's draft class so even if he has moderate success next year the scrutiny should be a lot less.

Well, I technically lost my bet from long ago with RealKing, but he's banned now. And if AB doesn't get hurt, I probably win it. Should have written in that condition. Oh well.

My avatar is now in your hands, RCF. Work/school appropriate, please.

In trying to evaluate his potential I'm choosing to use this 20 game stretch, and mostly disregard the prior 10mpg performances. It sounds like he flat-out shouldn't have been activated to start the season with where he was at physically.

He has a lot if potential. Saying he and TT can't play togeter is not true. I think 10 min of small ball with TT at C could be deadly. They both run like the wind.

Bennett's durability is a big question mark going forward. He is not an iron man like TT. We will have to have a productive 3rd big if he is our future starter.
