Why hasn't Kitchens been formally announced yet?

Why hasn't Kitchens been formally announced yet?

Either waiting to fill out the entire staff or just waiting until he officially signs the deal. Or both?

Mary Kay dropped an article earlier and said they expect to do the presser on Monday.

Probably working on offset language. That’s usually the holdup on most deals.

It was reported they wanted to fill out the staff so they didn’t have to take questions on openings or prospective interviews.

Two years ago Carolina led the NFL in zone coverage under Wilks.

He also blitzed a huge amount in Carolina, about 44% of the time in 2017 which was second only to Gregg Williams ironically enough.

So that’s what you can expect from Wilks as a defensive playcaller. A lot of blitzing and a lot of zone.

I hope Wilks can get al Holcomb to be our lb coach. That would be a big hire.

Curiously, were you excited about the possibility of Matt Eberflus?
Sure. I also like Wilks, for the record. Both great defensive coaches. But just not a fan of playing so much zone. Felt like we got fucking gashed this year when playing zone.

We get one good corner in 20 years and suddenly we have a bunch of zone defense experts who vehemently oppose it.

Why don’t we just let this play out? We have the personnel to blitz too...
Sure, but we are likely to add another good young corner in the draft, and we have a rookie Pro Bowler in Ward, who excels in man coverage.

When you have the luxury of having guys who can shut down a receiver, I’m not looking forward to a surplus of zone.

Then again, I still think part of that zone usage in Carolina was due to a lack of plus corners.

I’m hoping Wilks will become far more balanced here.

I'd also add that this Panthers team did not lead the league in any specific type of zone, per PFF. He runs a ton of different looks.

Nonetheless, he does primarily run Cover 3, which is slightly different than Eberflus and Gregg. It means he will ask Ward to play deep, not short, and prevent deep passes. Jabrill will be asked to cover the flat or to blitz.

I am pretty indifferent to this hiring. I think Wilks generally is receptive to his players strengths, but nonetheless, he will use a lot blitzes and play deep zone defense.

I don't think it'll be a huge transition for the defense. I am interested in how this turns out.

Isn’t zone typically a means of combating poor corners who typically get beat in man? I feel like it’s at least possible we don’t play it as heavily with guys like Mitchell and award on the roster; and even so, as long as it isn’t overly soft and we add a good pass rusher it isn’t a foregone conclusion that it will be particularly ineffective.

Someone tell me if I’m wrong
