Browns interviewing long time Packers OL Coach James Campen today, presumably for the same role.

He’s been Green Bay’s OL coach since 2007.
I wonder if he comes on strictly as “Offensive Line” or if he also keeps that “Running Game Coordinator” title if he joins our staff.

Because if so, that could mean we’re strictly after a “Passing Game coordinator” as well, which could double over as QB coach.

Thus, I could see that being Lindley if we don’t truly hire an offensive coordinator. Especially if Freddie is calling his own plays as expected anyway.

That rise would be as or even more astonishing than Kitchens’ own. You’re talking about a guy who was a graduate assistant at San Diego State last year, to QB coach/passing game coordinator of an NFL franchise.

This gives me hope. Holcomb is a great LB coach but poor play caller. But now Wilks will be back to calling plays. So we should see more of Carolina than Arizona.

It's still Wilks' scheme. Peppers will shine in it. He'll play like Antoine Bethea did; within 6 yards LOS. Almost as a rover, but with an assignment in zone, and the freedom to clean up in the rungame as an extra linebacker as if it was a 4/4

They were No. 3 in DVOA rushing offense this year and last year which actually kind of surprised me.

Wildly efficient, but rarely ever run. Zeke was 29 rushes short of matching their rushes as a team.

Considering the Packers granted permission for the Browns to interview him when they could have denied it, I don’t think the Browns would have to give him any sort of extra title to make that move happen.

Kitchens hopefully benefits from another team making a coaching switch and wanted to get their own people in place by snagging a quality, experienced position coach.

Right. So the team negotiates the deal with Freddie, but they hold off on actually signing it until his staff is filled so that they have an easy excuse to tell guys like Rapaport.

Freddie and Dorsey have been conducting the coordinator interviews, so Freddie's signing has been a done deal even if they didn't ink it.
All this to shield from some interview questions?

Why the hell do they care so much?

Sure, but the frequency at which they run had little to do with Campen, and more to do with McCarthy and Rodgers.

The efficacy is really all we need to know.

That’s only if you believe that to be the only reason.

It very well could be the fact that we’re still paying Hue Jackson not to coach the team, and Freddie is a relative gamble with an in-house meteoric rise. Could’ve simply been trying to protect themselves on contract length, offset language, or both.

While it’s a nice benefit to introduce the staff as a whole, I think it’s been more than that.

I agree with you. I was mostly asking Q why he thinks the Browns would care that much because in his post he downplayed this having anything to do with contract details

Well, their good RB was suspended the first two games and missed the last three due to injury, so that should factor in.

That’s not the reason IMO.

His contract simply wasn’t/isn’t finalized. I don’t think it has anything to do with staffing.

One of the NFL Twitter writers did an interesting analysis, trying to tie success & NFL offensive line coaches and rank who really was the best/worst ones..

It's an interesting quick read and perhaps a high level overview of how much value certain offensive line coaches add...

In short: Campen would decidedly be an upgrade over Wylie (who I'm surprised ranked as low as he did)...

Offensive line coach is one of the biggest hires Kitchens will make, after special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator..

Looks like Campen would be a solid option... One thing that stands out is the way Green Bay is able to develop and pump out offensive lineman, despite never investing a lot of draft capital into the position... Josh Sitton, Allen Babre, TJ Lang, Marshall Newhouse, JC Tretter, David Bahktiari and Corey Linsley were all 4th/5th round picks with Evan Dietrech-Smith and Lane Taylor as UDFA in his time as OL coach..

Rick Dennison, Pat Flaherty and Juan Castillo are on the market after being let go but Munchak or Callahan would be real prizes if Pittsburgh or Washington let them go...
