Board & Card Games? Not Risk or Monopoly in here...

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I got Axis and Allies Zombie edition for Christmas...

I got Masks of Nyarlothotep from Chaosium - though not the $300 leather version. Trying to line up a group to start playing it sometime in February.

Probably take us a year or so to finish....

After hearing about it for the last couple of years, I was finally able to play Smallworld. I like the game a lot andi hope it can make it's way into our rotation. The group we play with seemed to like it.

Also, the family got the gf and I Villianous for Christmas and it's actually a cool game, I hadn't heard much on it in board game circles but the gameplay was fun.

Apparently my neglect of evolution cards in King of Tokyo/King of New York has been a total waste, I just picked up The Halloween and Pandakai expansions and these cards seem awesome. I also picked up King Kong but I haven't dug into those ones yet.

My son & his fiance are the masters of buying awesome gifts. They bought my wife & I "The Castles of Burgundy" which is taking over our free time. GREAT game for the wife who's not a geek.

She's also into Dominion (the game, not Deep Space Nine).

Spent much of the Christmas - New Years holidays playing Pandemic with family.

But for my money the best game out there is "Twilight Struggle" -- a two-player card-based game reliving the Cold War 1946 - 1989. The game recreates the paranoia of the era, with the possibility of losing by blowing up the world, the space race, staging coups all around the world, and all the characters -- Fidel, Gorbachev, Willi Brandt, Allende, Nixon, Thatcher, Reagan, Kennedy, Samantha Smith & Yuri Andropov -- and many more.

Somewhat surprised nobody on this thread mentioned APBA or Strat-o-Matic. I still have APBA basketball from the Miracle at Richfield season (gathering dust). Video games of course killed sports-based board games, but in their day they were big among geeky sports fans.

Anyone play Magic the Gathering on here? I need more peeps to play with! lol

So I never really bothered with tabletop games (and so never really checked out this thread.)

But some friends of mine just got me into Twilight Imperium and I'm now hopelessly addicted.

Anyone else play it on here?

Anyone play Ultimate Warewolf?

I'm sure it was mentioned already in this thread but I finally got into Settlers of Catan. Definitely the best board game I've played in the last few years. I always try and get a group of friends to play at least once a month. Also the expansion pack is very worth it if you're trying to play with 4-6 players!

Ticket to Ride and King of Tokyo are similar ish games in that style.

If you're looking to experience a different side of board gaming, check out Pandemic and then Dead of Winter. It's co-op board gaming where you're facing "the game". Dead of Winter takes it a step further and adds the potential for traitor.

Appreciate the recommendations! I actually was reading about pandemic the other day. I work in the medical field so obviously that gives extra appeal. Would you recommend dead of winter over pandemic because of the potential for traitor? Also I had already had ticket to ride in my amazon wishlist lol, never heard of king of tokyo so I'll be sure to check that out.

Pandemic and Dead of Winter are very similar, I think Pandemic is a better starting point because it's cheaper and doesn't have as many rules/conditions. Most people I know like the idea of co-op, especially if they have competitive friends. A few people I know hate co-op, so it's a lower risk by starting with Pandemic. That being said, you can't go wrong with either, both of those games get play time in my circle of friends.

King of Tokyo is a quick hitter, usually takes about 20-30 minutes and is basically all out carnage between players. King of New York is the sequel and they tried to add other objectives to balance, but I prefer KoT.

Thanks again. I'll be checking these out for sure! It'll be nice to have some variety up my arsenal instead of wearing everyone down with Catan lol.
