Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm trying to decipher these quotes about Haywood. Sounds like he's taken 1 step forward, but has another 10 to go before the season starts.

• Rim protection is still an issue. “We’d definitely like to improve it,” Griffin said. Veteran center Brendan Haywood, who missed the entire 2013-14 season with a stress fracture in his right foot, has looked good at Cleveland Clinic Courts. “I’m cautiously optimistic,” Griffin said. “He missed the previous year with injury. It’s hard to say you’re counting on him. We’ve been pleased with where he is. He’s been able to play five-on-five situations. He’s in nowhere near game condition.”

Sounds to me like he's ahead of schedule. I am starting to talk myself into the notion that Haywood may contribute more than we realize. He's obviously in great physical shape based on the pictures we've seen, but the only thing that matters at this point is his foot.

I am willing to bet he's held out until December at the earliest and then he will see the court periodically after that. I'd be okay with just 10 minutes a night from Haywood. Now, if the Cavs land Mozgov or another center, then I doubt Haywood ever cracks the rotation, but I wouldn't fully count him out yet.

I still find it absolutely bizarre that he and LeBron are going to be teaming up. I still remember Haywood and LeBron going at it in 2008 and I don't remember them ever playing nicely afterwards. Now they are teammates and LeBron even include him in the social media collage a month or so age.

Well if he'll gives us a decent 7M-15M player next year we all should put aside our old grudge or whatever and welcome him with open arms. Also he may provide 20 min rim protection on nightly bases if these two happens we sould make a statue of Griff's or Haywood's or both ;)

Andrew Bynum destroying the Cavs locker room and getting Mike Brown fired brought us the team we have today. Think about that. We should be building a statue to him in front of The Gund if the Cavs win a Title in the next 2 years.

Sorry to get off track, but man I've never heard anyone call it the Gund in recent years.

I still say the Jake, but the Jake was cool. Progressive Field sucks as a name. I'll also always call it Cleveland Browns Stadium. With that said, the Q is a fucking sweet name!

Pip called my answering machine at 1am and offered me two tickets to "The Gund Show" and made grunting noises... so I assume the Gund name isn't dead...

Whaddaya say about some quick tidbit facts?

1. Haywood may finally fulfill the intention we drafted with back when we got Lasagna Flop.
2. Yeah, I just called him da Flop. Kinda stuck to me like the old Gund.
3. But now I call it the Q since that's cooler.
4. I hope Haywood makes a comeback health-wise, but not cause the same issues that Bynum caused.
5. If Andy can survive a clot, if Z can survive micro-fracture, if Bynum can physically make a comeback, there's no reason for Haywood not to.

We have all the pieces to build a champion, maybe even a mini dynasty. Even if Haywood's not a part of it full term, I like his contract, let's make it work.

Sources: Cavs' Brendan Haywood to practice first day of training camp

He will be limited when it comes to certain drills, but his activity will be increased throughout the course of preseason. One source says Haywood's full-contact clear date is "close" if he keeps up this accelerated path.

This is an encouraging sign for the Cavaliers being that Haywood, when healthy, can provide the team with some much-needed depth at the center spot. Before, there was an ambiguity on whether the 7-footer would even see the floor this season.

I changed the thread title since the possibility of Haywood contributing on the court this year seems to be increasing. Feel free to speculate about summer 2015 trades in the appropriate forum.

As reported in other threads, here is what Blatt had to say about him today:

----
Blatt also addressed the second question mark – the health of Brendan Haywood in terms of the backup center spot behind Anderson Varejao. Haywood, a 12-year veteran, missed the entire 2013-14 season with a stress fracture in his left foot. But according to his new coach, looked good in his first day of practice.

”Brendan did a great job (today),” said Blatt. “Our medical staff has worked long and hard with him and he has really, really made an effort to do everything that we’ve asked of him in order to get back on the floor playing. Brendan went through the whole practice today. That was not expected two months ago or even a month ago. I’m cautiously optimistic. But that was one of the real positives from today.

Yeah the way Blatt talked about him makes it seem that we will be attempting to actually play Haywood. They were really worried about his well being, and Blatt said Haywood practicing was his best part of camp

Haywood won't be asked to do too much. Play about 8-12 minutes a night -- tops -- grab some boards, protect the rim, fill the paint. Essentially, the dirty work.

He isn't going to be the exact type of rim protector we as fans typically envision, but Haywood is a big dude who plays physical. He will alter shots and hammer guards / forwards who want to drive to the basket. But he's also a big, old, slow injury-plagued stiff who is a non-factor on the offensive end of the floor. So, lets hope the help surrounding him can mask some of his deficiencies. Either way, anything the Cavs get from Haywood is gravy a this point. He's better than any alternative on the roster and he limits the Cavs need to play Tristan at the 5 as often.

I still think Thompson is getting slotted for a lot of playing time at center, but as we have seen the past three years, Thompson can only do this against certain opponents. If Haywood is healthy, we won't have to endure Valanciuinas or Hibbert getting manned up by Thompson. Thompson is a little undersized to be a PF, let alone a center, but like Malik Rose or Dale Davis he makes up for it with toughness and athleticism. He just can't do it against the biggest and most skilled centers in the game. Haywood and his size create more options against real centers.
