Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Did we get anything for getting rid of Gee?

Did we get anything for getting rid of Gee?

Cavs got a top 55 protected second round pick from the Clippers. They might still have the $3Mil traded player exception depending how people got signed.

So we essentially gave Gee away for nothing? (Not that Gee was worth much to begin with, but still)

Seems like a gesture towards NO as we could have just declined his team option, no?

Is it possible that Haywood can provide some decent minutes at center?

Makes no sense to me.

We wanted to move Bosh to the Western conference while also building a good relationship with trade partners. These teams may help us facilitate a trade some day... Didn't hurt us any.

Sort of hard to judge how effective he can be given he missed all of last year.

If he is healthy, I can envision him playing a decent role on this team especially against teams with more size like Indiana and Chicago.

Given our roster at this point, he might be more important than we would like to admit.

Hopefully he can become more of the third center rather than the backup.

That's the truth.

I don't expect him to score on offense or switch to the perimeter on defense. I hope he can contribute 10-15 minutes a game when the Cavs need a low post defender or a length rim protector glued to the paint, something the Cavs have not had in years. Teams still need to be able to put a player on the floor that can do that for certain matchups. If he can do that, I'd say he's worth more than his contract.

If all he can do is commit a couple hard fouls and go back the bench, he could still earn his money.

That said, there is a pretty good chance that his contract has more value that the player.

Do we even know if he is healthy right now? I don't see any recent interviews or anything about him anywhere. He had two screws put in his foot to help recover from a stress fracture in mid-October so that means he will have had a full year to recover by the time pre-season starts. I can't decide if I should totally write him off or if the chance of him giving us 10 minutes a night is still in the cards.

Surgery was performed mid-October 2013 on the stress fracture. Two screws were inserted (the same number Embiid had inserted). Announced recovery time was 3 months, which strikes me as overly optimistic.

By early February 2014, it was being reported that he could return to play within a few weeks, but by March 14, it was reported he was out for the season.

So they expected him to play last year but never did. I have seen no reporting since mid-March.

ABOUT THE CAVS

1. Brendan Haywood was in town and the 7-footer is in excellent shape in terms of weight and body fat. He had surgery to repair a broken foot last October, and missed the entire season. The Cavs weren't sure if he could play this season -- or at least not until January. Now, they are hopeful it will be sooner.

2. Haywood played with Shawn Marion in Dallas when the Mavs won the 2011 title -- beating Miami. Marion raved about Haywood when the Cavs were courting the small forward. Haywood said he plans to keep working hard on his rehabilitation.

3. The Cavs are excited that Marion and Haywood played on a title winner in Dallas. James, Mike Miller and James Jones were on title teams in Miami. Varejao was with the Cavs 2007 NBA team that reached the Finals.
