Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Also, Mills doesn't turn to mush during the playoffs.

Career Playoffs:

.462 FG%
.613 TS%
17.4 PER
.161 WS/48
3.3 BPM

This is the kind of efficiency the Cavs desperately need from their role players.

Here's the rub though.

Mo Williams is a FA. Patty Mills is not.

And in terms of the general profile, how many other players are available in FA that have that type of playoff resume and will cost just the taxpayer MLE.

So not saying it Mo or bust, but when knocking his playoffs of the past, we have to consider the context of those teams and more importantly, what other options are out there at that price point.

How about the SF position? Any decent guy they can get for the MLE?

I have posted a list of possible mini MLE candidates at the SF, and admittedly it's not a great list. These guys at least are all under 30.

Mirza Teletovic
Wesley Johnson
Jonas Jerebko (more of a PF)
Omri Casspi (don't laugh)
K.J. McDaniels
Kyle Singler
Jared Dudley (has a $4.2M player option that he would have to decline)

Others have suggested Mike Dunleavy. But he's 34 now.

For vet minimum, names worth mentioning include Richard Jefferson, Caron Butler, Matt Barnes, and Tayshaun Prince.

I think it would be nice if the Cavs could get a backup SF who could also play some minutes at PF. This would address the versatility David Griffin is looking for.

If you aren't impressed with this list, that's why some are looking at the Haywood contract to fill this need and suggesting names like Marvin Williams, Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, and even Nicolas Batum.

K.J. McDaniels would be my favourite for someone we would acquire without the Haywood contract.

Is it just me or does Dunleavy seem a lot older than 34 years old. Personally I like Wilson Chandler for the Haywood contract.

Just to be fair, Batum is a dream of mine, nothing more. That said, who knows what can happen. Who would have thought Moz/JR/Shump would come out of Dion and an exception you know.

The only way Batum becomes a possibility is if LMA leaves. I can't imagine too many teams clamoring over a near max role player.

Batum's length and athleticism at the starting 2 would push this team to a brand new level.

I know man, I can picture it. He isn't worth his contract, but that is exactly why I see him as a possibility.

It's just too bad Portland's owner is one of the wealthiest owners in sports. Still they would likely be looking to rebuild in the case that LMA leaves, and what better way to start a rebuild than getting rid of two of their best players. Lillard us good, but he is still on a rookie deal for the moment, so no worry of losing him in the immediate future. Maybe take a run at KD next season.

Hmm, he is not a good enough shooter to be a SG with lebron on the floor, we need knock down shooters.
I believe Portland don't think Batum is worth his contract, the fans aswell.
I wonder how much Gilbert planned to use that Haywood exception to get an all star, since it fits so well with lebron coming back, too bad lebron pushed to trade for Love since the Cavs could have acquired a big agent regardless.
Jerebko could have filled that stretch 4 need but it is what it is and I need to look at the things now, and I wouldn't mind batum at all but he needs alot of minutes at the SF when lebron is playing a the PF or resting.

Id love Batum and the Haywood plus pick route would work but wouldnt other teams be able to offer more for him?

Personally Haywood for Chandler and Foye would be a realistic and awesome move. Resign Shumpert and Smith to reasonable deals and wed be able match any team in terms of lineups

Would love to have Batum here. He is basically the kind of player Golden State Warriors have in abundance, in Klay, Barnes, Iggy, Green etc. A complete player who can play in or guard around three positions. He isn't a knockdown three-point shooter but is a much more reliable shooter than Shump or Delly. The only issue with him is that he is inconsistent but I think he would be much better playing alongside someone LeBron. But, why would Portland trade him? I would be very surprised if they do so. That is why Wilson Chandler seems like a more realistic target. Would we be able to get Jameer Nelson with Wilson Chandler, though?

I like KJ McDaniels too, the fact that he is young is a big plus. He would be the player I go at hard on the first day of free agency. If he can be had with our MLE, it will be seen as a steal in the upcoming years. This team needs some added youth to complement the vets we have. If nothing else KJ could be used as a good trade asset in the future. This team will have very few tradable contracts in future outside of our big 3.

I still believe we wind up with more than is being expected from the Haywood deal. As I mentioned, the Pelicans might look to dump Gordon in order to make a run at Jordan or Gasol.

Being able to immediately dump $10 mill from the cap is obviously valuable for any team hoping to add a big time free agent this summer.

KJ Mcdaniels is a FREAK! He's athletic beyond words, and he's an excellent shot blocker for a perimeter player.

Teams would absolutely be able to offer more talent. Pretty much every team in the NBA actually lol. It doesn't mean they would do it though. It may make sense for certain teams to out offer for Batum (if he becomes available), but I imagine the amount of teams looking for a role player paid like an all star is pretty minimal.

The other side is, without Aldridge, Portland doesn't have much hopes of contending, so going through a rebuildijg phase, we all know from the last 4 years, the trades you are interested in change drastically.

You stop looking for talented players, and actively try to make a weaker roster, to get a better pick, and keep cap flexibility. Does adding talented players help much in that particular scenario? Draft picks, and cap space is what matters to rebuilding teams.

Edit: As for Batum's fit here, he isn't a worse shooter than Shumpert, he's taller, and as good of a defender, if not better. He won't win any three point contests, but he can and does hit shots, and he would get very wide open looks here. We also know the Cavs are the reason he has his current contract (and thank god Portland matched, or was that a rumour?), and the Cavs have a history of aqcuiring players they have had previous interest in (Shump, Moz for example).
