Browns Free Agency 2015

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
According to http://www.nflpenalties.com/penalty/defensive-pass-interference?view=players&year=2014 Skrine was 2nd in the league in PI calls this year with 7. Haden and Gilbert each had 1 and that was it for the team. Those numbers seem low to me but the percentages seem right as Skrine is a PI machine.

The other penalty statistic for DBs is defensive holding which was ramped up this year by officials. Haden led the league this year with 8. Guess who was tied for 2nd? Skrine had 6.

Skrine was far and away the leader in penalties by a CB this year with 13. He has improved his technique but he's too aggressive because he's too short. I can't trust him out there and I'd be good to let him go.

Do you have any info on the amount of throws they had to defend each? Not trying to make any excuses for him, but I feel like Skrine gets a lot of balls thrown his way. IIRC, he was steadily among the top of the league in passes defended.

Doing a little looking...

Passes defended is defined as: This defensive statistic is credited when an incomplete pass is caused by a defensive player tipping or blocking the ball. A pass defense is also credited if the defensive player tackles the receiver simulatneous to the arrival of the football (breaking up the catch). It is sometimes referred to as pass deflected or pass breakup.

Skrine had 18 passes defensed; Haden 20.

I can't really make any conclusion there... Just that Haden and Skrine get a lot of coverage opportunities. The stats seem to imply that they're on an island a lot of the time.

Per Pro Football Focus:

Haden had 113 targets
Skrine had 123

Side note: Browns aren't getting Suh

Am I the only one who feels like Skrine closes his eyes and hopes to get lucky a lot? Guy NEVER turns around to the ball.

He's a penalty machine and far from a safe corner.

Skrine had 17 total penalties called, 4 of them were nullified or declined.

Haden had 10 penalties, 1 nullified

Gilbert had 6 penalties, 2 nullified

Where does that rank with the rest of the NFL?

Skrine was 2nd in all of the NFL, Haden was 5th

They also ranked 2nd and 10th in total snaps, as well.

Buster was first in the NFL in penalties, Haden 10th

Tough job for those two. It makes me feel marginally better about Gilbert's rough season. Perhaps, he'll be able to take the job, but I don't really see Pettine wanting to rid himself of Skrine just yet. I know you don't expect him back; do you feel like Pettine is confident that the combo of Gilbert, Desir and Williams can do the job?

I think they'd like to have Skrine back, but I don't think they're willing to outspend other teams when they've invested in Gilbert and Desir to eventually take over his role anyway.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him move on if he can get starters money in free agency.

Rizzo just said on RBS.. He knows a guy whose "in" with the front office. Browns are targeting Suh!!!

Everyone will say Rizzo is an idiot and doesn't know anything, and 2 months later it will surface that they did try to sign Suh. Suh is a great fit for the Browns. I don't care about culture. But let's go ahead and waste a high draft pick on an unknown when you can sign one of the best DTs in the league.
