Browns Free Agency 2015

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Saints felt the need to pay for the 3rd rounder which is good value nowadays man. Lets not forget Stills was a 5th rounder so what do they really lose?

Nailed it. :chuckle:

Of course, Brandon Marshall was a fourth and he went for a fifth this year. So, that was bad.

Harvin to the Bills.

Their fans must be so satisfied right now.

What?

Ellerbe was going to be cut if he wasn't traded. He counts as 9 million under the cap this year and he played 1 game last year because he was injured.

For a team forced to trade their 2nd best offensive weapon (Jimmy Graham) because of cap problems it doesn't make any sense to trade a highly productive 22 year old WR (arguably their 3rd best offensive weapon) who has a 633,000 cap hit for Ellerbe and a 3rd rounder. It's actually awful value.
I disagree. Loaded draft again at wide receiver, the Saints primary issue was defense and protecting Breea. This gives them a good asset to work on any of the 3. And they added a defender they can use. A Browns fan should be careful not to call a 33 year old lber washed up when our defense relies on an older one. The Saints can still renegotiate his deal, and have leverage since renegotiation beats being a FA after teams have spent their cap. Not to mention that Brees supposedly wasn't a fan of Stills.

Folks are not looking at the short term here, which is a two year window with Brees. We have seen time and again how a good QB can turn crap WRs into capable. Saints now have the picks to improve on D and the O line, either through draft or trade.

Again, what?

What does it matter what round Stills was drafted in? He's a good player! They traded a good player for a 3rd round pick and took on 14x the salary. On what planet is that good value?

When you're dealing with a locker room problem child and getting a 3rd rounder in return, congrats. Good value. When your star QB isn't happy with a player and you trade him for a 3rd rounder, good value. Its been reported that Ellerbe will take a pay cut, so you get a average ILB that is good chasing RBs, while knowing in all of this that WRs are easily replaceable, good value.

Im done with this though, it will go nowhere. Saints fans seem to like it.

Anyone know who's up for free agency next year?

I would think the Browns will have to spend big because I think next year is the first that you had to have spend at least 89% of the total cap over the 4 year period of 2013-16 or have to cut a check to the NFLPA for the difference.

Even the Browns wouldn't be stupid enough to just let the money go unspent and try and get something out of it.

Well, I didn't expect Hughes to get that kind of money, just a run stuffer without eye-popping numbers. I'm curious to see how much is guaranteed. If that is the market for him, I'm glad they held onto him. Just surprised, I guess.

According to SportRac, the Browns will be right around 88 percent this season.

Much less next year...

May want to recheck your figures, or...you know...check at all.

That is starter money, at least in the first year. He can play NT and 3-4 DE, but wow, never thought he would command that type of cash coming off a knee injury and disappointing year. I guess they saw him having a big year this season and commanding a lot more next season. If you aren't suing the cap on free agents, use it this year to lock down core guys.

I'm not gonna speak for Damage, of course, but this seems like it's just speaking of them wanting to build through the draft and not free agency (budgeting & evaluation)

I don't really get either side of the argument to be honest. There's two camps, it seems; those who are unhappy that the Browns aren't signing the high-end, high-priced free agents and those who want to exclusively build the team through the draft. Neither of which, in my opinion, are smart ideas for where the team is right now. We've seen hundreds of instances where big free agency spending spells disaster for an organization. On the other hand, just because a team spends some cash in free agency, does that preclude them from building thru the draft or preclude them from making solid draft choices? That's kinda silly too.

I really liked what they did last year, bringing in Whitner and Dansby right at the start of free agency and Hawkins, Dray and Tate a little bit later on. None of those guys broke the bank and they all (except Tate) contributed greatly to the team last year, both on and off the field. Those players really supplemented the roster, not asked or paid to carry it, which is exactly what this team needs. With their documented interest in certain players and taking visits, it kinda seems like they tried to do something similar this year but struck out, for one reason or another.
