Browns officially announce 15 UDFA signings

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Stanton is making #2 QB salary this year at $3.7 million. If they find an interesting rookie free agent for the third quarterback, great. Baker has achieved Andrew Luck status where there is no reason for competition, just make sure his backup is a good mentor like Hasselbeck used to be. If the starter gets hurt, it's a lost season anyway. Break out the BenGay for the old guy.

Is Stanton needed this year? I doubt he can win a game at this point, he is a great mentor, but I rather find a young more capable backup than Drew at this point.

His main strength is in the quarterback room, helping to break down defensive tendencies and figuring out which plays will work week to week. Most importantly, Freddie has to believe he can still handle emergency quarterback play. At age 34, I don't think fans have adequate evidence to say he can't play anymore.

I see it hard to believe we would only have Stanton, Gilbert and Blough in camp if they felt Stanton couldn't play anymore. I mean Blough is a Rookie who went undrafted and Gilbert at 27 years old, has had 3 pass attempts in the NFL with 2 years of NFL experience. I think they do trust Stanton can still play if he hits the field cause of who else is on the roster.

Stanton could never play. So this idea of him "not being able to play anymore" is laughable. He's been a flat out scrub on the field his entire career.

The more obvious answer is that the Browns, like numerous other teams in the NFL, are fully aware that there's only about 20 truly capable QBs in the NFL period and aren't going to try and fool themselves into thinking that their season is anything but absolutely shot if their starting QB goes down with a season-ending injury.

I know people are going to immediately cite Stanton's career 11-6 record as a starter and try and make W/L a QB stat, which it isn't. Make no mistake, if Mayfield goes on IR, the season is screwed in terms of actually accomplishing anything significant.

The rest of the team may very well be talented enough that the Browns might be able to claw out a few wins here or there with Stanton managing the game, but there's virtually no chance they could win a playoff game or anything that actually means anything.

Stanton is Mayfield's caddie. He's the liaison between the QB room and the coaching staff. Nothing more, nothing less.

If Baker goes down, our objective for the year is no longer to compete for anything--it's to get the highest draft pick possible.

I would've liked to grab someone like Stidham this year to groom as a backup, but we had other needs.

But what if it isn't a season ending injury? What if he misses only a few games, so the goal is to stay in the playoff hunt until Baker comes back? Can Stanton perhaps win you some regular season games?

Any QB with Freddie calling plays, Monken designing schemes, Chubb running the ball, Beckham and others catching passes and hopefully a defense taking the ball away a lot could maybe claw out a few wins against some bad teams.

Doesn’t mean they’re any good.

Just good enough to claw out a few wins, which may be all you need.

I think you’re failing to give the defense credit. I would expect them to expect nothing but for Stanton to be a game manager. Drive us down the field with dump passes to your weapons, ride Chubb/Hunt/Duke and just don’t turn the ball over. If Mayfield is out for the season, yes we are fucked, but I think this team is well enough assembled, on both side of the ball, that the defense could help us win a few games with Stanton as QB.

holy crap when that kicker hits the ball it sounds like a bomb is going off

Probably the same conversation when the Browns called after the draft.

“Mr. Hammer, this is Eliot Wolf of the Cleveland Browns, we’d like to sign you as an undrafted free agent.”

“Cool. Sign me up.”

“Don’t you want to hear the money details?”

“Nope.”
