Smith was running that offense like a well-oiled machine more often than not when I watched the Niners. He had one terrible game against the Giants and a couple mediocre games mixed in.

If Weeden isn't the guy and Geno Smith isn't either, Alex Smith could buy the Browns at least a few years before drafting a new QB.

Add Alex Smith to limit your offense's mistakes, let Richardson run rampant, sign key free agents to fill the holes on defense, and make sure your next coach doesn't stunt your young talent's growth, and you have yourself a playoff team.

Why the Arians hate?

61 year old career coordinator. Those guys never work out.

Also, I think people forget that the Colts-Browns game when Arians didn't know how to manage a clock.

Right. Him being a CFL coach definitely doesn't preclude him from success. I do agree with that 100%. It's entirely possible the guy could come in and be a successful NFL coach. They do seem to come from all walks of life these days, so if a guy has experienced some level of success at any level, there's a chance they can come in and turn around a team using the same philosophies they used before.

But it is funny. And if they hire him, it's gonna be another in a long line of jokes associated with the Cleveland Browns.

I mean, come on...the Browns would be going from:

Romeo Crennel- Grimace. Just an absolutely brutal coach that EVERYBODY was laughing at during his entire career with the Browns. The guy hand-picked Maurice Carthon as an assistant coach for God's sake. Weren't there rumors that Carthon was setting up incorrect blocking schemes during plays?

Mangini- The guy that ratted out Bill Belichick after spending his career doing a horrible impression of him. The Sanchez trade was hilarious at the time...but oddly enough, the right move.

Pat Shurmur- Mike Holmgren's friend's Nephew. possibly the worst coach the Browns have had since returning. Crennel might have an argument though.

Marc Trestman- CFL coach.

I mean...you've gotta be able to laugh at that series of hires.

While hiring a CFL coach seems... random. It's not as bad as I first thought, at least he has been having a lot of success over in the CFL. I have never seen their games so I have no idea how well it translates but I imagine it's no riskier than hiring a coach from college.

Fair enough, but I've seen Bill Bellichick mismanage a clock in the playoffs with Tom Brady sooooo....I mean, I'm just saying, I think we can point to isolated situations with just about any coach.

I'm trying to focus on big picture with these guys. I like, big picture, what Arians has done. And I was pretty impressed with what he did in IND this year.

In theory, I tend to agree with the aged career coordinatoor adage, but I think he may have a bit to offer and this season may be decent evidence towards that. That team doesn't have a ton of talent, and for as much as people fawn over Luck it's not like the dude had some kind of Pro Bowl caliber season.

For me, it's disheartening when you consider the fact that he's never gotten a look for a head coaching gig until now, at the age of 61.

Arians was one of the worst offensive coordinators we ever had with the Browns. People wanted to throw him off the 480 bridge. Now some years later he's a candidate for head coach? No, not even close..

Can't take Horton seriously with that haircut.

The idea of Trestman, on the surface, is laughable and should be laughable to fans of NFL football. A CFL coach coming in to coach the woeful Browns? SMH moment for sure. Fitting right?

However; looking into Trestman's history I'm somewhat impressed. He's been successful everywhere he's been. He seems to have a knack for getting the most out of his QBs whomever they are. But, there are some serious concerns. 1st of all, for all the success he's had as an OC or position coach, he's never had a head coaching job in the NFL (Red Flag). 2nd, he's had odd transitions.

1989 OC with the Browns went to AFC Championship game, Bernie had a great year, 1990 he's the QB coach in Minnesota. Seems like a step down?

Out of coaching for 3 years between Minnesota and SF (1992-1995)

1996 huge year with SF as OC and QB coach 12-4 record. Lose in division round, George Siefert let go and he's out of a job. 1997 he's QB coach in Det?

Seems like he's never been able to capitalize on the successes he's had. Why?

Pretty sure we went to playoffs when he was here

I agree, but I think he deserves a lot of credit for what IND did this year.

What? Really? You mean that juggernaut of Couch, Willie Green, KJ, and Quincy Morgan???:chuckles: Holy shit!! The guy got us 33 points in a playoff heartbreaker vs the Steelers with Kelly Holcomb at QB. Or are you referring to the team we somehow got 7 wins with while James Jackson was our leading rusher? We had some Gawd awful OL's back then and that was always my biggest beef with those teams. Not to mention our skill positions sucked ass. Cripe, the guy isn't a miracle worker.

He had some great years in PIT and their offense took a huge step back this year without him. The QB's who have played for him always sing his praises.

And look what happened to the Browns between '89 and '90. From AFC Champ. to 3-13. Offense falls off the earth. Not sure why he left but the team sure felt it.
Can't really do anything about the SF situation. Not really surprising he was let go when his HC got fired.

I'm not sure why he hasn't been able to capitalize? But, when finally given a chance at a HC gig, he sure has been impressive.

Bernie raves about this guy, FWIW. I know Bernie has really taken a nose dive these last few years, but he's always been a huge proponent of Trestman.

You guys are overthinking it.

It's Whisenhunt.

I am curious about what happened that he left Browns, that said, I still trust Bernies judgement on coaching. His addiction demons aside, Bernie has a good head for football, just a bad head for his personal life. So, Bernies recommendation pulls allot of weight with me.

Anyone know if this guy is an asshole and thats why with success his coaching jobs have been so short?

I'm generally terrified of guys near or over 60 that have never held an NFL/college head coaching job before. Coaches change every year... there's usually a reason these guys haven't been hired for any opening over the years. Of all the head coaches currently in the NFL, the highest starting age for a new hire without NFL/college experience is 51.

Interviewing two guys who are older than that in Trestman (57) and Arians (60) scares the crap out of me. We don't need another Romeo. If we can't get the established stud, there has to be some young, hungry superstar assistant out there... right?
