How butthurt are these Ohio students/alum that people don't give a shit about Bobcat sports. Lol when Groce leaves for a better job.

I don't really care, frankly, who does and doesn't root for Ohio. I'm not an idiot. OU will never overtake OSU in anything. They will never have more fans.

As for Groce... I wish he would come back, even if its just for one more year. I realize that this team has a better chance of missing the NCAA's with everyone back than they do of making another Sweet 16 run, but I can dream, right? That goes out the window if Groce leaves. And after what I heard today, there's no way he comes back. He's going to Illinois.

I'm going to reply to this in the MAC thread.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that you can't. I see no problem in that at all. The question is why some cheer for Ohio State instead of the school they actually attend/attended.

Why do you think the people on here that no longer live in Ohio still like Cleveland teams? Because they grew up liking them.

One shouldn't have to suddenly shift their 14 year allegiance from Ohio State to Cincinnati just because they're not attending OSU.

I understand you need to have pride in your school but let's be realistic.

That's completely understandable, although I don't think you can easily compare the situation being discussed here to professional sports.

Listen, I grew up cheering for Ohio State because everyone else did. However, when I enrolled at The University of Akron I became a Zip. I earned my BA there and about to finish my MA. I lived in UA's dorms, became a part of UA student organizations, and have attended countless UA sporting events. I am not just a fan of the sports teams...I have a real connection to the university that goes beyond athletics. My time at UA provided me some of the most memorable years of my life. I met most of my best friends there. For me, the experience and connection I have with UA takes precedence over a school I never attended in a city I don't live in (or even near), even if I did cheer for them growing up. If Ohio State plays Akron, why wouldn't for the school that I am legitimately a part of? It absolutely boggles my mind that any Ohio U students would be cheering against their own school in what would have easily been the biggest game in their program's history. I guess I'm in the minority there.

Maybe those that would cheer for OSU over their own school didn't have the same great experience I have had at UA and didn't establish the same connection I have made with UA...I'm not sure to be honest. I started the thread to find out why, and while I still don't understand the opposing perspective, I do respect and appreciate it.

LOL @ thread.

Ya'll can eat my Buckeyes.

I attend Kent, but if you were born in Ohio and aren't a fan of THE Ohio State Buckeyes, then there's something severely wrong with you.

We are gonna take so much flak for this. :chuckles:

This is kind of a random tangent, but does it piss anyone off when people tell you that you should root for a team from the same conference? That makes me so mad. Like, I couldn't give a shit less what the rest of the Big Ten teams do in the tournament or during bowl season. Hell, I love to root against the big boys from the rest of the B1G.

Thanks for illustrating why a lot of fans are driven away from "Buckeye Nation"...the expectation that you will cheer for Ohio State and that Ohio State represents all of Ohio. Ohio State is one of eight universities that represent different parts of our great state. Ohio State doesn't represent me, Akron does. I have no more allegiance to Ohio State than I do to Kent State, Ohio, Miami, Cincinnati, Bowling Green, and Toledo. I do, however, respect each one of those schools, their students, and the unique opportunities they each offer to college students.

I have no problem with those who support Ohio State for whatever reason...I really don't. I do have a problem with Buckeye fans like yourself who are ignorant to say that "something is severely wrong" with a person if they don't support a school that they have no specific allegiance to.

Luckily, the large majority of Buckeye fans respect the other Ohio universities, understand that someone not associated with the university may not necessarily root for them, and act as a wonderful fan base.

I think that's more common for the smaller conferences because those teams aren't always in a position to advance deep into the tournament (or make a BCS game, etc.). Like we were discussing in the MAC thread, when Ohio doesn't make the NCAAs, I always pull for the MAC team that does. Of course, I pull for the underdog no matter what, so maybe I'm just different.

I totally respect the other Ohio universities, yet agree with Triple Threat. Despite him being a nerd. *troll*

It's like tradition. You're born in Ohio, you are and Ohio State fan til the death. I don't understand how people born in Ohio can't like the Buckeyes. They are a symbol of where you came from, and that's something you can't ever forget.

OH IO mothafucka.

Good to see another TRUE Buckeye.

I'll let you believe that. The Buckeyes don't represent me in any way, shape, or form. I didn't grow up in Columbus or anywhere near there, so they don't symbolize where I came from.

I don't dislike them, I'm just indifferent to them.

I'm an Akron Zip and proud of it.

Three questions for everyone:

1) What school did you graduate from?

Kent%20State%20Logo2.jpg

Fight on for KSU.

2) To what degree do you cheer/not cheer for Ohio State?

I love the football team, 3rd/4th favorite team, fuck the basketball team (detailed below).

3) Why or why don't you?

I love the football team due to the fact I respect the tradition that it represents to the state of Ohio. Being born in the same area where folks like Woody Hayes, Chris Spielman, and Paul Brown it's kind of hard to not respect the 11 men every sunday. In a lot of ways, cheering on OSU football is more like cheering on the US Olympic team to do well in the Olympics and the fact that much of the roster is still compromised mainly of kids from Stark, Summit, Portage, Cuyahoga, Mahoning Valley county is well..pretty awesome.

That said, my heart in all sports belongs to either Purdue or Kent State, as those are the two teams I'm now most closely associated with. My dad having raised me a Purdue fan, and me now attending Kent St.

TOSU BBall on the other-hand? Fuck Matta, Fuck "The Thad five" thst made them a team that contends for the big ten title, and fuck the entire "Non-Ohio" roster. NOT ONE KID ON THAT ENTIRE ROSTER IS FROM NEOHIO, NOT. FUCKING. ONE. And you expect me to cheer for that roster? Fuck No. They always disappoint, and their players never do a damn thing in the pros. Most overrated team consistently in all of sports. I'll be cheering for the Jayhawks to knock their asses out.
