I would never cheap out on a power supply. That is a recipe for disaster. I like both seasonic and corsair. You can find deals on both if you are patient.

I've heard good things about certain Rosewill lines as well. Corsair has their 750cx on a heck of a deal on Newegg right now but everything I read is that Corsair becomes awesome once you get ABOVE that line. Tempting in terms of the money, but I don't know. I'm keeping an eye on sea sonic and xfx. Apparently xfx is just a rebranded sea sonic unit anyway. Not in any rush yet. Still have this week and next before I'll even be done with school. Hoping to have the whole thing built a month from now.

Ordered the GA990fxa-ud3 mobo and got the cooler master 212 EVO as a bundle. It's far and away the most highly touted cpu air cooler on the market and will allow me to do some mild over clocking when I'm ready to try that. AMD stock coolers are bashed all over the Internet. I figure I'll just get the 212 now so I can plan my case around being large enough to fit it.

Parts so far:

Amd fx-8350 cpu
Cooler Master 212 EVO cpu cooler.
GA990fxa-ud3 mobo
Ripjaws X series 2133 8gb (2x4) ram
Samsung 840 EVO 250gb ssd

I'm keeping a keen eye on the EVGA gtx 770 right now, hoping it goes on sale. The 4gb model is currently 389.99 on amazon and has been at that price for a week. I'm hoping they drop the 2gb model that's currently at 348.99. If not, I'll spend the extra $40

Also beginning to do a lot of research on PSUs and consequently watching those for deals as well. It would appear that all of sea sonic, xfx, and the corsair series above the cx line are the best I can get.

Once I have the gpu and psu ordered, the expensive shit and heavy lifting is over with. Then it's just little stuff like a case, optical drive, wireless adapter, etc. I'm at $550 in right now and for the quality of parts I've ordered, I'm happy with that.

Final build will probably range from 1200-1300, but I think it's going to be money well spent.

Take that $40 and put it towards something else. More RAM, another GPU, a better case, a better PSU (you can always get a better PSU), cabling, surge protector, high end gaming mouse, solid keyboard... The list goes on..

If you are financially constrained, don't buy that 4GB card unless you honestly see yourself playing 4k games and buying a 4k monitor. If you were going to go with a Radeon and Eyefinity, I'd say something different, but with a Nvidia card, it's just not worth any additional money.

Yeah, If you want a 4gb card it is kind of wasted on the 770. If you were planning on sli-ing the 770, that would be another story. I'm sure that is why Nvidia released a 4gb model. 4gb in a single card would be good for the 780 (although I think they only come in 3gb) or possibly in the amd 290 (which is a hell of a card, but it puts out a ton of heat and is noisy). The mantle support on AMD offerings could be nice if you play battlefield or plan on playing star wars battlefront, or star citizen like I do. Although dx 12 is suppose to have lower level optimizations like Mantle.

In all likelihood, I plan to SLI a pair of 770s when it comes time to upgrade. Be that 6 months, a year, 2 years, I don't know. From what I understand, when utilizing SLI, only the lower card's vram is used so if I want 4GBs of it two years from now, I'll need a pair of 4gb cards. Correct me if I'm wrong; or just let me know if you think there's a better plan.

Rosewill HIVE 650w is on sale for 59.99. It's apparently a tier 2 psu according to Newegg. It's semi-modular, and has 46 amps on the 12v rail while the gpu requires 42. It certainly won't be able to handle SLI when I go that route, but that should fit my needs for the time being, no?

EDIT: the sale on the HIVE 650w is today only

This is what doesn't make sense to me..

What get a low-end, underpowered PSU if you have the extra $40.. I don't think thats a good idea...

You should be looking at getting a 750-850w modular psu of a reputable brand. Especially considering you have power hungry components, have mentioned possible overclocking, and future SLI.

Don't skimp on your PSU.

p.s.
Regarding vram, a 2gb is not slower than a 4gb card at resolutions below 4k. When you go over vram is more important with respect to frame-size (resolution) rather than frame-rate.

If the entire scene can be rendered in video ram in a single-pass, there is no advantage to having more memory. Thus, 4gb cards are not generally advantageous unless you are going to be playing with multiple monitors or in 4k.

I use Corsair for all my builds, Rosewill for budget builds.

$120 for this PSU is an absolute steal... got to buy it today to get the extra $10 off though.

All of it ends today. I hate MiRs because they are never an easy process for me. I've never been through one with a pc company but I hate trusting that process.

It's tempting. I still have few hours to think it over, but my gut says to wait for a total jaw dropper to come around. Thank you for the recommendation regardless!

I suspect Newegg will have a Memorial Day blowout if you are willing to wait that long.

I'm hoping to have everything built by then, but that's all the more reason to keep my upgrade options open. Could be a nice time to snag a second gpu, another ssd, a huge hdd, etc.

My deal with myself right now is that for every final project I finish here at the end of the semester, I get to order something new. Tonight I'll have a paper done, so that means I'll owe myself a purchase once I see something on sale or bundled.

Thanks for joining in and giving me another poster's worth of 2 cents! I really appreciate this thread.

Apparently there's a combination of deal and MiR that gets the Asus 770 down to 284.99 when all is said and done.

2gb model, not factory over clocked (do I need to overclock a gpu anyway?)

Any reason I shouldn't be taking this and running?

That is a smoking deal. I believe it comes with watch dogs too. I don't bother over clocking my gpu. There is performance gains to be had but video cards typically die on me every 2 to 3 years and I have to rma. Over clocking voids the warranty and will reduce its lifespan.

I actually lied, it is factory over clocked, just not to the extent that EVGA's is. It's like a 50ghz difference as far as I understand.

Yes, it comes with Watch Dogs.

That frees up $100 from my budget if I get it, which you're recommending? Does Asus normally make quality GPUs? They have mostly good reviews with a few bad examples of people getting lemons, but I feel like I see that with every company.
