Building a Gaming PC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I actually lied, it is factory over clocked, just not to the extent that EVGA's is. It's like a 50ghz difference as far as I understand.

Yes, it comes with Watch Dogs.

That frees up $100 from my budget if I get it, which you're recommending? Does Asus normally make quality GPUs? They have mostly good reviews with a few bad examples of people getting lemons, but I feel like I see that with every company.
Asus has a very good reputation. I have used a couple of their motherboards on the past and they were excellent. I have never used one of their videocards but I would assume they are of quality as well. I would definitely recommend picking up that card.

Ordered. 294.99 not including the $10 MiR and a free copy of what appears will be an awesome game. I'm very excited.

Buddy of mine just came out of the blue and said he had an optical drive lying around that I could have if I needed one. That's pretty cool.

Talked to my mom on the phone today and she said my dad might be able to snag a copy of Windows from his office. That'd be even more cool.

Excellent, it's always nice to have a slave drive to dump a bunch of data you don't need quick access to. Use the ssd for windows important programs and certain games.

I meant a cd drive. Still $20 I don't have to spend.

A free copy of windows would be the shit. Fingers crossed on that one.

Just grabbed an Antec High Current Gamer 850w semi-modular power supply from Newegg for $99.99 on a shell shocker. 69.99 after MiR which I will obviously try to get but I'm not counting on. $100 for such a highly rated unit was worth it for me though. It is more than capable of handling any future upgrades, so I don't have to worry about a psu for the foreseeable future.

Looking good my man, do you know what version of windows you will be running? Do you plan on overclocking that processor once you are all setup? I recommend getting realtemp or core temp as well as some stress testing apps to see what your thermals are. My cpu started throttling awhile back, come to find out my temps were extremely hot. I went ahead and replaced the stock cooler and it made a world of difference. The thermal paste they use on the stock coolers tends to get flaky and bad after a few years use. I'm running a mild overclock on my i7 860 2.8 (3.5 ghz) and my temps are much cooler than the stock cooler was at stock speed. You have to dick around a little with voltages though to get your system stable as you try and push your processor though. So I recommend checking out some guides if you plan on over clocking.

I've been thinking that I may try some mild over clocking after I'm all set up and familiar with my system. Most people report being able to keep a stable 4.3-4.5 or so with my little air cooler. I don't think I'll need to overclock from the start, however. It'll be something I look into once it's built and configured.

Case ordered. Went with a Corsair Carbide 400r. I splurged a little bit on a cool case, but didn't get too crazy. It's got tons of cable space, ssd compatible hard drive trays, and slots for up to 10 fans - 3 included.

Front panel has two led fans that give off a white color. It's a neat, clean, easy to work with case.

I will head to Best Buy to shop monitors in person when I go home for the summer next week. I'll also look into operating system prices, how accessible they are to pirate, etc.

Assuming I buy Windows and a monitor in the 120-140 range, I'll finish around $1250 for the entire build. Not too shabby.

Got some graduation money, gonna get a new monitor and hopefully a keyboard if i can get a monitor on a deep enough sale (dont wanna cheap on it if i dont have to). Looking at getting the microsoft sidewinder keyboard, i dont really want to spend on a mechanical and the sidewinder seems like the defacto non-mech

edit- lookin at this guy, 21.5", IPS, HDMI, 1080p, 5ms GTG, $120

if anyone has any suggestions, id love to hear em

I've got a pretty similar monitor myself. Not sure if mine is IPS though. Mine however does have a 2 ms response time. Mine is a couple years old though. 23" Acer.

I just wanted to update this thread with the news that I built my pc last night. The link to the parts list is :http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3OQe9

I may get to pictures eventually. My cable management is putrid and I'm honestly scared to open it back up and bump something the wrong way now that I finally have it all up and running.

This was a long, grueling process from learning about technology to researching it to looking for deals to strike. I haven't done much so far as I'm mostly installing games and drivers, but the few games I've put on it look gorgeous.

It's really cool that this site supports a community like what we have here. Thank you for all who had tips to add. I read this thread religiously over the last month.
