No way do I give this guy the taxpayer MLE. His translated numbers aren't great, his rebounding is particularly bad. Maybe there's a reason for his numbers, but he doesn't really block many shots, he doesn't spread the floor, and he can't rebound. And he's 30 so if he can defend the PnR, I don't imagine that's a skill he will be retaining much longer.

He wants to play in the NBA for the minimum, sure, he's a guy you can add to the mix.

Nice thought though about including his rights in a Haywood trade. It's conceivable some other team may have some interest in him.

One guy some have been mentioning as a potential FA target is Kevin Seraphin. I really want no part of him. He does have some low post moves, but this rare skill set is mostly fool's gold. He is a mistake-prone, low basketball IQ player who doesn't stretch the floor and isn't great at protecting the rim either. Maybe playing alongside LeBron would improve him, but that could be said for just about any player.

Why would he leave money on the table, signing for less to be an NBA backup? I think the Cavs have to at least come close to what he would get in Europe. He isn't a star so every dollar counts.

Once upon a time, I read that his wife wanted to come back to the USA at some point. I don't know if that's still the case, but it could be a strong motivator.

Yeah, if we're doing anything I hope it's trading his rights to someone that is interested in his services.

There is certainly no way that we can give our precious MLE to someone that is taking his first lap around the league.

Just curious. If he our draft pick and not technically a free agent, then does he even qualify as player we could use the MLE on? We wont use it on this years draft pick so why would he be different? I don't know the answer but he is our draft pick.

If we bring him in then Andy can go back to being a damned Power Forward, Center never suited him - Ever.

Cavs have his rights, but if they want to sign him they have to use a salary cap exception, such as some or all of the mid level exception. Or just offer him a minimum contract. This is because he was a second round draft pick back when he was drafted by the Cavs in 2008 or whenever it was. If you want to sign a second round pick to more than a minimum contract, you need to use cap space or an exception.

Thanks! That makes perfect sense. Always forget the different rules that 2nd rounders fall under.

I think the question the Cavs will need to answer is whether Andy can be relied on to play 10-15 effective minutes per game next season, and they will ideally need to have a good idea about this by the free agent period in July.

I mean, if Love is back (and healthy), Tristan is re-signed, and Moz is back (team option surely will be exercised), and if the Cavs add a combo forward, there aren't many minutes left while everyone is healthy. But not everyone will always be healthy (except Tristan who apparently always is), and if the Cavs are wise they will proactively rest their players more aggressively.

Given current trends in the league with the emphasis on spacing, Varejao is a center, even if that does make him more vulnerable to injury. He'd mainly have to match up against back up bigs. Some games he probably wouldn't even play.

It would be cool to have him on the team just for the sake of thinking about all the cliques for the role players on our team. You'd have LeBron's friends, the New Yorkers, and the Russians for starters...Oh and the awkward looking white dudes (Delly+Joe Harris).

I think it's important to point out he has some of the longest ASSHOLE-ARE-YOU-KIDDING arms in pro sports history. His value will be high in a trade, or as a buffer for Varejao to get back to full mobility. You like rim protectors who beat the bejesus out of the opponent? He can do it for 14 minutes a game. And he knows the Blatt system.

Yeah, except Blatt's not gonna be here next year, right? ;)
