I think it's important to point out he has some of the longest ASSHOLE-ARE-YOU-KIDDING arms in pro sports history. His value will be high in a trade, or as a buffer for Varejao to get back to full mobility. You like rim protectors who beat the bejesus out of the opponent? He can do it for 14 minutes a game. And he knows the Blatt system.

Yeah I remember he had a 7'6 wingspan when they measured him at the combine.

Edit: Yup

He turned 30 in May.

Is there any sort of precedent for someone this old coming over this late and actually helping a contender?

Seems like a last resort to me.

Yea not a lot though....

the most recent ones I can remember are Pero Antic who was a rookie at 31 and averaged 7ppg and 4rpg
& Pablo Prigioni at age 35 averaged 3.5ppg and 3apg

Ironically they are both in the playoffs right now with contending teams

Sabonis was 31 his rookie year.

Sabonis was 31 his rookie year too.

It really is quite common in basketball.

Nope. Rookies who are over 30 are common.

Most recent ones: Pablo Prigioni and Pero Antic.

Going up against Howard would be a huge challenge for him now.
I agree, no doubt.
Just pointed out that him being owned in that video doesn't say anything really since he was a very young guy going up against an already established Euroleague bigman.

Anyway, back to Kaun - I would love to see him as a 3rd big in the team. He is a really really good defender and could give our bigs some well needed rest.

True, but prime Sabonis was perhaps one of the 5 best centers in basketball history. Prime Sasha Kaun is a worse rebounding, non-shot blocking version of Jeff Withey.

And on the downslope of his career....

If by common you mean there's been about 10 in the NBA's entire history, then sure, I can see that.

Let's not forget the Cavs' 2005 hottest free agent target; Sarunas Jasikevicius, who was 29 when he came over.

Boy, the franchise really turned when we missed out on him....
