He'd be the fifth big man. Nice to have but not a necessity.

I bet he'd play for the minimum with a chance to win a ring with Blatt and Mozgov. We'd have the best frontcourt in the league lol if we keep everyone.

"“It is too early to say that I’ve decided to retire. I have just ended my European career. If I have the opportunity to sign in the NBA, I will play. I still want to try to play in the league. I hope that it will happen” Kaun said. “My agent is ready to negotiate a contract. The proposal may come not only from the Cavs but also from other teams” added Kaun."

I bet he asks for "required tender" come July 1st. Cavs will have to offer him a contract by September 6th or he becomes a free agent. If they can't agree to terms, the contract could end up being a one year non-guaranteed min-salary deal like Glenn Robinson III got last year. Pretty much no downside for the Cavs, because they could waive him at any time.

If the Cavs have the rights, they might as well try and bring him on. Not sure how they could pass up a 7 footer, who more than likely would bring more than perk and haywood combined.

Sasha Kaun, C, 7″0′, 255 lb, May 1985
Team: CSKA Moscow; Nationality: Russian
Drafted: 56th in 2008, Rights held: Cleveland Cavaliers

The former Kansas product has officially announced his retirement…..from playing in Russia. The long time CSKA center who played for David Blatt on the Russian National Team may be headed to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who hold his NBA rights. Kaun may not be a great athlete for NBA standards, but he can provide solid big man play in a 15-20 minute role, and can probably replace the production Cleveland expected but did not receive when they signed Kendrick Perkins.

I said it in the begining of last season that I expect coach Blatt to spice up the Cavs a bit with Euro talent, and Kaun was one of my guesses. he will be great as a backup center and if he can play the way he did just two seasons ago in my opinion he could also give Timo a fight for the starting lineup. I heard the cavs are persuing another PG also, don't be surprised to hear names like sergio rodriguez and sergio llul who played for Real madrid this last season...

True, but prime Sabonis was perhaps one of the 5 best centers in basketball history. Prime Sasha Kaun is a worse rebounding, non-shot blocking version of Jeff Withey.

And on the downslope of his career....

A 7 footer with a 7'6 wingspan is going to alter shots even if he can't jump over a phone book. I've said it elsewhere: Blatt should know if he is good enough to sit on the bench as an 11th man next year. I trust Griffin and Blatt will either utilize him as a way to cut back on Mozgov minutes during the regular season or as a trade chip. My guess is the former.

Sergio Llull just signed a 3 year deal with the Rockets.

Out of curiosity, how have posters here watched so much tape of Kaun?

I know his game from participation in international competition, and about once a year I took in some of his Euroleague play. Still, its going to be hard for anyone to guess how well he will acclimate to the NBA until he is in summer league games.

Nope. Rookies who are over 30 are common.

Most recent ones: Pablo Prigioni and Pero Antic.
i think you and i have different definitions of "common"
