Cavaliers need to emulate OKC & how they were built

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They are starting Perkins and Ibaka. I can't think of a better defensive combo at the four and five.

Just saying, defense is as much about coaching/scheme as it is personnel.

The first Goal of the cavs is to become a competitive team that can get into the playoffs. They now have a young core and need to build their value. They have a plethora of picks at their disposal that can be used for the trade or trade pieces.

What they have been doing up to this point is moving complementary pieces to the old team in exchange for young talent and picks. As much as people want the cavs to be a bottom feeder the next three years it isnt going to happen. Scott has no intention of of being a transition coach.

The Cavs as an organization Have taken control of their own d league team to find talent that slips under the cracks. Theyve shown a willingness tot ake on contracts if they can gain talent from the acquisition. They have passed on low value trades and they in a season have become one of the youngest teams in the league . If a team can become competitive and put themselves in a position to win consistently and maintain flexibility. you have a team a move or two away from doing whats needed to win a championship,

as a fan i just want to see good basketball everything else will work itself out

Yes....it will happen...they were a bottom feeder last year, will be this year, and will be in 2013-2014 as well. After that, it depends on how good Irving and the guys they draft in the next two drafts turn out to be.

A good example is the mavs playing the zone 15-20 minutes a game throughout the season at the expense of a few wins to make a championship run that involved the best execution and most consistent application of a zone defense to be seen. When the zone broke down instead of having it to toss it like other teams in that situation in the passed the players were able to make adjustments to maintain its effectiveness.

Getting 4 top 5 picks in a span of 3 years might be a "model for success" to an extent, but it also looks a lot like luck.

Top 5 picks usually have enough of an impact to boost teams out of the top 5 picks the following year.

Ping pong balls is never a good "plan" as far I can tell. But making moves to acquire multiple draft picks, and then knowing who to pick, is obviously going to help a team.

Cant plan luck though.

In regards to the comments about Paxson sucking feces or whatever it was, and how we wouldn't have gotten LeBron otherwise, is not really a good point. Plenty of teams have had success without LeBron James. (like all of the NBA champions ever). Dwyane Wade led a less than prime Shaq and the Heat to an NBA Championship in a way LeBron probably wouldn't have been ready to do.

25-30 wins for the cavs this year.. thats going to be about middle of the pack not at the bottom end.

Uhhhh.....no fucking way they even sniff 30 wins. Probably not even 25. Maybe not even 20.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one, but at the end of the season, I'll be the guy sitting in the corner saying I told you so. Sheesh, 30 wins? Cavaliers really almost going .500?

As of right now, the best thing Lebron did for us was convince Dan Gilbert to buy the team.

Or how he made basketball fun to watch again in Cleveland. We didn't win a championship, but it was nice to at least have a chance.

Like the Cavaliers, Oklahoma City, is a small market team. They realized that their best chance to sustain a winning model would be by building their team through the draft & trades. They used their cap space, not to sign free agents, but as flexibility in trades. That said, let's take a closer look at how the Oklahoma City Thunder were built by their GM, Sam Presti:

Point Guard
Russell Westbrook- 1st round pick (4th overall) in 2008
Eric Maynor- trade from UTAH (w/ Harpring in salary dump); was 20th pick overall in 2009 draft
Nate Robinson- trade w/ BOS (for Nenad Kristic, 1st round pick, & Jeff Green, who was 5th overall pick in '07); was 21st overall pick in 2005 draft by NYK
Reggie Jackson- 1st round pick (24th overall) in 2011

Shooting Guard
Thabo Sefolosha- trade from CHI (for 2009 1st- Taj Gibson); was 13th pick overall in 2006 draft by PHI
James Harden- 1st round pick (3rd overall) in 2009
Daequan Cook- trade from MIA (w/ 1st round pick in salary dump); was 1st round pick (21st overall) in 2007

Small Forward
Kevin Durant- 1st round pick (2nd overall) in 2007
Lazar Hayward- trade w/ MIN (for 2 conditional 2nd round picks; was a 1st round pick (30th overall) in 2010 draft)

Power Forward
Serge Ibaka- 1st round pick (24th overall) in 2008; pick acquired from PHX
Nick Collison- 1st round pick (12th overall) in 2003

Center
Kendrick Perkins- trade w/ BOS (for Nenad Kristic, 1st round pick, & Jeff Green, who was 5th overall pick in '07); was 27th overall pick in 2003 draft by BOS
Cole Aldrich- draft rights traded from NO; was 11th pick in 2010 draft
Nazr Mohammed- trade from CHAR (for P. Brezec); was 29th overall pick in 1998 draft by PHI
BJ Mulllen- draft rights traded from DAL; was 24th pick in 2009 draft

To summarize:
-15/15 players on the roster were 1st round picks into the NBA.
-8/15 were 1st round picks by OKC.
-7/15 arrived by trade. 2 trades were salary dumps & 3 were draft night deals.
-NO current players were signed through free agency.
-Team was aggressive in making trades, especially those that involved draft picks (ex- Kurt Thomas + 2 1st round picks from PHX for a 2nd round pick; team then traded Thomas to SA for a 1st round pick + 2 players).
-Team hit on most of their 1st round picks, but not all (Johan Petro in '05, Saer Sene in '06, Mullen in '09, Aldrich in '10).

THIS is the model the Cavaliers need to follow!

It seems a bit overly restrictive (i.e. that they all have to be first round picks and there can't be any free agents). What about guys like Andy, Samardo, etc? And I certainly hope we don't follow the part where we have to have our own pick be in the top 5 for 4 consecutive years (Green, who they traded in the Perkins trade, then Durant, Westbrook, Harden).

I don't think they get 30, but if the defense we saw in the Preseason continues, they won't be losing the close games to bad teams like last year.

So all we have to do is draft another Kevin Durant. That'll be easy...

I'm mad I just saw this thread and didn't see it yesterday. I have so many .gif's I could have used.

Last year we could have been forgiven for hoping for 500. Hell, we started the season that pace.

This year there's no excuse...
