So if I'm understanding the new CBA correctly, the Cavs will NOT have the full MLE available to them this offseason. They will be able to use the taxpayer MLE, which is about $2 mil less.

I believe that is the case but I'm always wrong on salary cap stuff.

The tax line was $76.8 million. Our current roster is at $82.6 million.

I think the technical answer is, "it depends". The Apron is estimated at $85.6 Mil for next summer. If the Cavs waive Haywood and get rid of their free agent cap holds ( renounce or resign), they could get below the apron and then they could use the full MLE.

The practical answer is that they will likely be over $100 mil if they keep the big three and re-sign Tristan & Shump. That would mean they only get the small MLE.

Whoever made the midseason trade possible should be given a statue if lets say the Cavs win the entire thing.

Hope Dan is willing to pay to keep everyone and use Haywood to find James a backup. Giving Andy that early extension was a big mistake.

Andy's extension was about two things. One of those things was setting up "the Haywood contract #2".

Hmmm how will that work?

Andy will decide after two years that he's essentially done playing, will be traded for the value in his unguaranteed third year, and then get cut by the team that trades for him?

As harsh of a business as the NBA is, it seems like Andy is going to retire here, whether in 1 year or 4 years.

But maybe I'm underestimating LeBron's willingness for being cool with them shipping Andy off for assets when that contract ripens(prior to the ungauranteed 3rd year)

I think its more Andy will retire after being traded. Just a feeling.

Can't we just resign everyone due to bird rights? I think JR opts in, Kevin Love opts in/gets a new max contract, Tristan gets paid like he deserves, and so does Shumpert while Dan Gilbert laughs his way to the bank with how much money he's making outside of basketball.

I really don't think we lose anybody. We should even be able to add better depth with Haywood's contract, our first round draft pick, and the taxpayer's MLE of around 3.3 mil/year.

Agreed, this is the age old way of building on a solid team, a Joe Harris draft pick, a Dellavadova can be mined out in the same manner. Went out and bought Miller, Jones, Marion on the cheap, no reason why other vets will close out their careers in a similar fashion. Play late into June, Gilbert will still be counting his way to the bank.

If I'm not mistaken don't we have the Clipper second round pick that was top 55 protected, I think that pick is 57...... The Denver trade ? .........

That's either wishful thinking or great foresight. I'm not seeing how the two contracts are comparable, care to elaborate?

Both contracts are:
1) owned by the Cavs
2) have a large non-guaranteed salary on the final year that can be used to facilitate a trade with a team looking to shed guaranteed salary.

I think that's for 2016?

2015
  • Cavs have their own first round pick ( #24 )
  • Blazers pick #53 ( Traded Blazers -> Cavs --> Bulls --> Nuggets --> Cavs )
2016
  • Cavs first round pick goes to the Suns if it is 11-30 (Protected until 2019, traded Cavs --> Celtics --> Suns )
  • Clippers second pick if it is 55-60 ( Traded Clippers --> Pelicans --> Cavs )
Cavs don't have any other second round picks until 2020.
