Cavs sign Kevin Jones

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Only one game live. Other two via game streams on YouTube.

BTW next game you go to let me know and I'll see about getting your tickets upgraded.

I've been to almost every home game so far VIP this year. High top tables were my favorite seats so far. Where do you usually sit?

They are cutting down Vip access though i think by like 100 people. Caterers are running out of food every game.

More topic worthy, met Kevin Jones at the last Charge after party. Good dude, and far better than anyone else on the Charge. Knew he was going to get picked up by some other team if we didn't grab him.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Love to see this guy succeed. He could be a Faried or Haslem type player. He can rebound and has a decent shot. He doesn't seem super athletic, but looks strong. If he can come in, play some defence, crash the boards and hit an open jumper or two he'd be a useful piece.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Dude honestly...is he better than TT?

Undrafted.....4th selection and this is even a question....but....

Is Kevin Jones a better player than Tristian Thompson?

Kevin Jones Receives NBA Call-Up After Continuing to Make Strong First Impression

By Keith_Schlosser on Nov 30, 2:00p

On Thursday, basketball fans were overwhelmed with the news that two lottery selections-- the Thunder's Jeremy Lamb and the Suns' Kendall Marshall-- were both assigned to the minor leagues and will report to their team's respective D-League affiliate.

Lost in all of the debate of whether or not these said lottery picks "deserve" to be sent down to the NBADL was the news that Canton Charge forward Kevin Jones received an NBA call-up to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

As Lamb and Marshall both look to make strong enough impressions in the D-League to prove their worths to their NBA squads, Jones is a perfect example of how one can use the minors to catch the attention of a squad in The Association.

After being waived in training camp by the Cavs, the team still saw enough potential in the forward to warrant keeping a closer eye on him. Looking for a place to play after getting cut, Jones' services were retained by Cleveland's D-League affiliate, the Charge.

At just 6'8", an early knock on Jones' game has been that he's too small to be able to assert himself against some of the NBA's more aggressive forwards.

If the Cavs had any early doubts about that following training camp, Jones has used his early stint in the D-League to begin putting those all to rest. At 251 pounds, the West Virginia alum has muscled his way inside, using his strength to grab an immense amount of boards in the early goings of the season. Averaging 13.7 rebounds through his first three contests, Jones is among the league leaders in that category.

Jones seems to understand that it's doing all of the little and/or unique things on the court that will get an aspiring prospect noticed by an NBA team. 6 of Jones' 13.7 boards per game come off the offensive glass. What's more, he's averaging 1.7 steals per game and is also shooting an efficient 54% from the field.

But the NBA D-League's third call-up of the young season can, without a doubt, score the basketball too. As if he wasn't dominating the competition enough by simply filling up the other parts of the stat-sheet, Jones' 27 points per game prove he's a capable scorer from inside as well.

Jones has gone from setting out to prove he deserves a shot in the NBA, to now proving he's just as deserving of minutes on the court for one as well. Though Cleveland did in fact sign Jones to a contract, they also subsequently assigned him to the Charge, keeping him in Canton for a bit longer. All this means is that the forward will just have to continue doing more of the same, showing the Cavaliers that he'll be ready and able to contribute when called upon to do so.

Such a call-up (and subsequent re-assignment) just further proves the great relationships that NBA teams are beginning to form with their D-League affiliates. These minor league squads are undoubtedly becoming further extensions of the big league teams. They understand what kind of player the parent squad is looking to discover and/or develop, and certainly keeps in contact to let them know who's hot and who's not.

Whereas minutes may not be available for Jones in Cleveland at this very moment, it's safe to say the Cavs saw enough in the gritty forward early on to want to formally snatch him up before someone else did. Keeping him in Canton after training camp surely helped convince them, as he's been front and center with the team's affiliate ever since.

Staying in Canton helped Jones eventually earn an NBA call-up, and it's not the first time such an extended training camp of sorts helped a good-looking prospect. Daniel Orton also re-signed with the Thunder after being waived in training camp, all because they were able to still keep tabs on him with the Tulsa 66ers afterwards.

Kevin Jones probably won't join Cleveland Cavaliers this weekend

By Mary Schmitt Boyer, The Plain Dealer

ATLANTA -- Cleveland Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said newly signed power forward Kevin Jones likely will not join the team this weekend but will remain with the team's NBA D-League affiliate, the Canton Charge, for the short term.
The coach doesn't think he'll stay in Canton long.

"I don't know at all as far as when we expect to see him,'' Scott said as the Cavs prepared for tonight's game against the Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena. "If I had to guess, I think we'll see him pretty soon. He'll be up here and start practicing with us.

"As you guys know, in training camp we really liked Kevin, thought he could be a pretty good NBA player. That's why we wanted to keep him around, get him into Canton, see how he'd played. Obviously, he played very well.

"I don't know what type of NBA player he's going to be, but it's going to be interesting to find out.''

Jones, a 6-foot-8, 250-pound rookie forward from West Virginia University, has played in three games this season with the Charge and is averaging 27.0 points on .540 shooting and 13.7 rebounds in 41.3 minutes per game.
He was one of three players on the Cavaliers training camp roster that were released and then designated for assignment to the Charge, playing under an NBADL contract until the Cavs signed him on Thursday after releasing forward Luke Harangody.

Although the Cavs have been struggling, Scott said that whenever Jones reports to Cleveland, it will be as a reserve and that it might be difficult finding minutes for him in games.

"Relax,'' Scott said to fans expecting Jones to have an immediate impact. "He has a bunch of guys ahead of him right now. He understands the situation. This is an opportunity for him to come up here and learn.''

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Hey all. I'm not a Cavs fan but I am a die hard WVU fan and have had the privilege of watching every game KJ has played since his freshman year of college. I realize I may be a bit bias, but I believe you guys got an absolute STEAL with Kevin.

As people have already stated, he's a bit undersized and he isn't even close to being the most athletic guy in the gym but for what he lacks in size, as corny as this sounds, he makes up for with his heart, motor, and basketball IQ. For those that haven't seen him play, his mid range game is virtually automatic and he's an absolute genius when it comes to positioning for rebounds (specifically offensive rebounds.) WVU's team last year had 7 freshman so he and Truck Bryant WERE our team. Those two players made up over 50% of our offense and if any of you have ever seen Truck Bryant play, you'd understand that KJ literally made up our entire offense. Despite putting up monster numbers all year, he got snubbed for Big East POY because the rest of our team was mediocre at best.

Before the draft, there wasn't a single mock draft I saw that had him going later than the end of the 1st round or early 2nd at the latest. I don't know if any of you guys realize this, but he was physically at the Prudential Center for the draft so he could walk across the stage but teams in the second round started drafting players from overseas that they could stash away as projects and Kevin never got drafted. It was heartbreaking to watch this great player and guy have to sit there as name after name got called and it wasn't his. I think he's used this as motivated and helps explain why he's been such an animal in the D-League. I'd expect this kind of play to continue.

I would not be surprised at all if he turns out to be close to Kenneth Faried-type player. With the right mentoring, I could see him being an Varejao or Zach Randolph clone. And for any doubters Kevin Jones > Flopengody all day, every day and twice on Sundays.

Edit: Oh, I forgot to add; being an undrafted player, he had interest from many different teams and I believe he had the privilege of choosing which team to sign with and he chose the Cavs over other teams. He wants to be here and make a difference.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Here are a couple of Kevin Jones articles from around draft time. Thought it was interesting at the time that his agent was talking about a late 1st or early 2nd round guarantee, but then didn't get drafted. Maybe a team with a late 1st and/or a couple of early 2nds had that in the plans, but used those choices to move up to get a player they didn't expect to fall...

http://zagsblog.com/articles/agent-kevin-jones-has-a-first-round-guarantee/

Kevin Jones‘ agent says the former West Virginia star has a guarantee from one team that he will be picked in the first round of Thursday’s NBA Draft.

If that doesn’t materialize, he expects Jones to go in the second round.

“A team in the first round has committed to him,” agent Bill Neff told SNY.tv. “The question is, what does that mean? I never trust anything other than what happens on draft night.

“He’ll get drafted,” Neff added. “It’s either them in the first or early second.”

Legendary Hall of Famer Jerry West also sees the Mount Vernon, N.Y., native going in the second round. And DraftExpress.com has the 6-foot-8 Jones going at No. 17 in the second round to the Utah Jazz.

“He did OK in the first day of the combine,” West told Register-Herald.com. “But the second day of workouts with the (Los Angeles) Lakers he did not do nearly as well.

“I think he probably will be drafted somewhere around the second round, if not in the first round. But we’ll see what happens when the draft starts.”

Jones, who just missed out on Big East Player of the Year honors to Marquette’s Jae Crowder, averaged 19.9 points and 10.9 rebounds in his senior season under coach Bob Huggins.

Thomas Robinson of Kansas, a fellow power forward projected as a top four pick, averaged 17.7 points and 11.9 rebounds.

At 22, Jones is one year older than Robinson.

“He just doesn’t excite you,” Neff said of the perception of Jones by many NBA decision-makers. “You’re going to pick someone else that excites you more and then go, ‘Sh–, we missed him.’ He’s going to make someone look stupid.”

Jones has already worked out for Dallas, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Oklahoma City, Chicago, Golden State, San Antonio and the Lakers.

He’s slated to work out for Memphis Monday and then possibly Cleveland sometime before the draft.

“We call him Donald Duck because everybody tries to duck him [in workouts],” Neff said, adding that several top players had declined to work out against Jones.

Of those that have, Neff said Jones outplayed likely lottery picks Tyler Zeller and Meyers Leonard as well as Andrew Nicholson.

“He just murdered them,” Neff said. “He’s not sexy, he’s just productive.”

http://www.wvillustrated.com/story/18925536/jones-agent-kevin-is-angry

MORGANTOWN - Former West Virginia University basketball star Kevin Jones finally realized his dream of finding a home in the NBA. It took a little longer than expected, but the undrafted free agent eventually found work with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jones has agreed to a three-year contract including a partial guarantee with the Cavaliers. That means Jones will be guaranteed some amount of money regardless of whether or not he sees any regular season action with the Cavaliers.

Jones agent, Bill Neff, was with his client throughout the draft when he saw 60 picks come and go without any of them having the name, Kevin Jones.

"Kevin wanted to be drafted and was not," Neff said. "He is one of those guys who doesn't win the beauty contest, he just wins the battle."

Jones led the Big East in scoring and rebounding last season. Ultimately what hurt Jones was his size for the position he is projected to play in the NBA.

"The NBA draft is a beauty contest," Neff said. "It is why they so often fail. When I did research over the last ten years, the number of second rounders who had a good career is such a limited number. They are picking the tallest and most athletic guy. Kevin was perceived as a little bit short. He did all of these wonderful things, but he is 6-foot-6 and a quarter in bare feet. Can he really make it in our league? The fact that he led the second best conference in scoring and rebounding didn't matter."

By going undrafted, Jones and Neff had the opportunity to try and analyze NBA rosters and look for the best opportunity to make it in the league. That analysis led them to what looks like a good fit in Cleveland.

"Knowing that Cleveland has had a history of developing young guys, they are doing things right," Neff stated. "They have a young executive and Mike Gansey is there as an executive and gets Kevin, we kind of joined up with them and are working on a concept where we get some guaranteed money in return for them getting to own his rights for a couple of years."

Former WVU Guard Mike Gansey attended several West Virginia University games and was there not as a former Mountaineers, but as a scout for the Cavaliers looking at Jones. Gansey always liked what Jones did on the floor and was certainly in his corner when it came to convincing the Cavaliers that they should sign Jones.

"He was a big proponent," Neff said of Gansey. "The family knows Mike, but my understanding is that Mike Gansey was a big proponent. There was a third guy, Trent Leggett, who was also a big proponent of Kevin that bought in and was further along than Mike."

Neff is preparing Jones for the potential that he may have to spend some time in the NBA Development League. The Cavaliers have an affiliate in Canton, but do have a history of being patient with players and helping them eventually become solid NBA talent.

"You're talking Udonis Haslem," Neff stated as a comparison. "Haslem went to France for a year and worked his way through the system. We're trying to do the same thing. Kevin will go to the Summer League and may have to play some in Canton in the D-League as part of the deal. They have done this successfully in the past with other players."

Kevin Jones is done riding an emotional rollercoaster that included the excitement prior to the draft, the disappointment following the draft and now the relief that the process is over. It was all part of a crazy 48-hour period for Jones and his family.

"There was a lot of disappointment during the draft and thereafter," Neff said. "Kevin and his family were stunned a little bit. There was real disappointment and I tried to look for a way to make this a positive and there is now a feeling that we're headed in the right direction. We had a setback and now we're headed in the right direction."

Jones will head to Cleveland on July 5. He will work out with the Cavaliers Summer League team before beginning competition in the Summer League in Las Vegas about ten days later. That will be Jones' first chance to prove himself in a game setting and Jones likely will not disappoint.

"There is a big chip on his shoulder. I think he is going to do really well and I think he is angry. I think he is like ‘how could you dare not pick me after what I have done?' I think there is a big chip on his shoulder and that is okay to use it in a positive way. I think he is definitely angry and I think the people in Las Vegas better watch out."

Jones will begin the next step in his career about the way his college career started. Jones arrived in Morgantown as a smaller player who eventually bulked up and learned how to be an even better rebounder. He has worked on his jump shot and once again needs to overcome adversity to succeed.

"The story of his career is to be underrated," Neff stated. "But he always beats you and always gets the rebound. You don't go to the NCAA's four times and have a coach like his call you the hardest-worker he has ever had and not succeed."

Jones finished his college career scoring more than 1,800 points and grabbing more than 1,000 rebounds. He was just the second player in school history to do that. The first was Jerry West. That is some select company. Those who are not betting on Jones better watch out. His work ethic and desire to prove people wrong might be enough to lead him to a successful NBA career.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

^^Supposedly OKC was the team that may have given Kevin Jones' agent a promise but Perry Jones unexpectedly dropped to their pick.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Dude honestly...is he better than TT?

Undrafted.....4th selection and this is even a question....but....

Is Kevin Jones a better player than Tristian Thompson?

Let's cool it a bit. He's tearing up the D-League. Luke Harangody tore up the D-League too, but he's a below replacement level NBA player. Tearing up the D-League is largely meaningless.

I'd love it he becomes a good player for us, but I think we all need to put D-League performances in perspective. If we sent Thompson down there he'd probably average a 20-20.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

His path reminds me somewhat of another WVU suspected late 1st early 2nd round pick a few years back - Mike Gansey. What about Pittsnogle? Where is that dude?
