Cavs sign Kevin Jones

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Let's cool it a bit. He's tearing up the D-League. Luke Harangody tore up the D-League too, but he's a below replacement level NBA player. Tearing up the D-League is largely meaningless.

I'd love it he becomes a good player for us, but I think we all need to put D-League performances in perspective. If we sent Thompson down there he'd probably average a 20-20.

The thng is my question is pure curiousity. I dont care about stats KJ is dropping or what TT is dropping. Im just asking the possibility thatKJ IS better than TT.....Which I think could be a real possibility. Maybe slim but......possible

Anything is possible, but I'd say it's unlikely. Jones will never be as good a defender as Thompson is. Thompson has the advantage in size, athleticism, and length, and those are three things that can't be taught. The main reason why Thompson continues to play big minutes is that, despite his struggles on offense, he's a good defender and he's becoming a much better rebounder.

Jones may be better on the offensive end, but the real question is whether he can translate that D-League scoring against real NBA players. Until I see him play, I'll continue to have my doubts.

Now to get rid of Walton somehow.

Thompson also plays a lot because he was the 4th overall pick, is young and is still learning, and the other options on the bench are garbage. I would not be surprised if Jones gets into the rotation relatively soon as he seems to have the type of game that seems to find a role in the NBA. The undersized big rebounders often overachieve.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Kevin will be a league-average power forward on offense pretty quickly, maybe even slightly better, but he's gonna get burned on defense. Easily the most overlooked facet of his game is his shooting, probably because it goes completely against what we expect from a short, heavy power forward. He shot 78% from the line as a senior, 16/18 from the stripe so far for Canton, which accurately represents how accurate his shooting is from midrange. Think shorter Andy, but without the size or mobility to cover 80% of frontcourt players.

I'm glad this kid finally made the roster. Been rooting for him to make the team for a while. The odds are still against him sticking in the league next year, but at least he's got a spot to try to make a name for himself.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

So is it he going to stay in Canton for awhile or is with the Cavs now?

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

The Cleveland Cavaliers have recalled forward Kevin Jones from the Canton Charge.

Jones has appeared in five games for the Charge this season, averaging 23.6 points (third in the league), 12.6 rebounds (third in the league) and 1.4 steals in 41.0 minutes (fourth in the league).

Hopefully he'll get a chance at some minutes as the 4th big.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

When can we get a look at this guy? Surely he can get Samardo's minutes. Even if he doesn't do anything, still need to see what he CAN do.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Thy didn't want to play him before. They were scared of winning games. Now that Dion is out too, they can risk it.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Let's see what he can do against Chicago. Throw him right in the fire

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

He might be more similar to Zeller than anyone else, actually. They're very similar physically (with Jones' much longer arms compensating for shorter height), both have versatile, well-rounded offensive games, and both struggle on defense due to their size.

Hopefully he gets some run on Wednesday so we can see if he's worthy of a rotation spot.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

I think KJ is going to be a pleasant surprise here. Watched quite a bit of him at WV, kid is a baller. I'm going to go ahead and say that he is atleast the 4th best big in the roster right now. Hope he gets some playing time sooner rather than later.

Re: Cavs sign Kevin Jones (and waive Harangody)

Not going to lie, I know it's a small aspect of the NBA currently. But I think the Cavs are really ahead of the curve with this D-League Stuff.

The ability to farm people, keep them in the system, and move them up and down seems like an extreme advantage.

This could possibly help level the playing field when it comes to that whole "Cleveland will never be a player in Free Agency" thing. I agree, it could be huge for them in the future, especially if it provides a way to strengthen our bench without overpaying for washed up vets no other team wants.
