Cavs Training Camp (roster down to 15)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He's never seen the Cavs play before. He was a Miami fan until July 11th. Dion didn't play any differently in the scrimmage than he did much of last season.

This, actually. Fast break dunks, midrange jumpers, open 3 pointers... That's what I saw from him yesterday and that's what I saw from him last season.

It makes a ton of sense for Andy to go back to his 6th man role. He can anchor that second unit no matter who else is on the floor with him, be the high post initiator of offense and linchpin of the defense. Obviously I see him playing crunch time minutes with the first unit at the end of games, but he could win 6th man of the year off the bench.

Except that Dion obviously had issues with the way Kyrie ran the team. He already looks like he'll be following LeBron's foot steps and buying into the idea of him being the leader of a championship caliber team. Whereas last year, he played well, but he had no guidance, and there were obvious power struggles between him and Kyrie.

Well, in Dion's defense, Kyrie was kind of a prick last year.

Yeah Andy can be effective with anybody.

I am really curious to see what kind of lineups Blatt will put out there, and which oddball lineups he will use to exploit mismatches. Some of the Israeli posters have said you will see a guy play an important role in specific games when he usually just rides the bench. I am sure it will not be as simple as a 9 or 10 man rotation.

Brendan, Mike Miller, and James Jones all showed last night that they have something left to contribute. Marion looks good. Health is the big factor, but this team is looking deeper than I thought with these contributors.

I wouldn't be surprised if he sort of step on LeBron's toes this season as well. He's still a young player.

Even LeBron who was far more advanced at the same age as Kyrie is did a lot of immature things as well, but Kyrie is getting a chance to play with a proven championship winner who's in his prime, LeBron never had that opportunity in his first 8 seasons playing for the Cavs. He had to grew on his own and made some questionable decisions.

Kyrie has bit of an inflated ego, but there's nothing wrong with that if you can back it up and lead your team the right way, but when you haven't done anything of significant in the league as far as leading your team the right way, winning games, making the playoffs, etc, you have to take a step back and understand/analyze the game better and develop better chemistry with your teammates.

The good news is that he says he's ready to play better and runs more plays for his teammates than he ever did in his last three seasons in the league, he's also playing for a competent head coach and playing with two greater teammates than himself for the first time, but the bad news is action speaks louder than words, and people says things that they want others to hear all the time, but it doesn't mean that they're going to do what they say.

He's still going to overdribbles the ball for 8+ seconds, take low quality ISO shots, miscommunication with his teammates and playing James Harden level of defense.

Anyone here not sold on the bench yet? Mike Miller, Marion, Haywood and Andy? All of them are old and/or injury prone... Hopefully we can sign Ray Allen that's a must to add some more depth. We desperately need a backup point guard! The past 5 championship teams had a good back pg (Norris Cole, patty mills, Farmar, Barea) Can Dellodova get it done? Kyrie has a history of being injury prone as well.. We need a center. rim protector and a another wing defender too. I would bank on us making the finals with as explosive a starting lineup we have but I wouldn't bet on us winning it all until some of the holes are filled.

Look at the past decade of the NBA... veterans win championships when the pace of the game slows down, but you need young legs in there too. The team isn't perfect and you have to play the games, but the veteran leadership and presence is what this franchise lacked last year.

I'm sold on it. The coaching staffs will have to monitors some of those guys minutes and put them in a maintenance type of program, but it's up to the coaches to utilize those guys talents the right way and that will be the challenge. I think the ball movement and chemistry will be fine and those guys will get involved in a lot of plays that will get them into the type of rhythm to play well in the playoffs. The Cavs are obviously not done on improving the roster, but this team already has better role players than arguably Miami's last four years bench players(excluding Ray Allen).

Did you really just ask if Dellavedova can get it done and cite Norris Cole as a good backup PG in comparison?

I'm sold on it. The bench is deep. Oh Dellavedova*. Varejao can get it done, especially when healthy. Haywood was a surprise for me last night, he'll be a contributor. Delly can get it done at back up point guard, he played well behind Irving and Jack. Ray Allen doesn't really add much depth, he is a three point specialist and can be a coach for the team but that is about it.

Dellavedova > Cole

The bench is old/injury prone and you want to ADD Allen to it?

We are afforded the luxury of having 4 absolute studs on this team offensively. In Blatt's system, as long as one of them are on the court at all times, i don't think the depth of our bench will matter much. A Marion, Miller, Dellavedova, Varejao bench is quite formidable, IMO.

Honestly, Ray is done. He can still hit big shots, but so can a lot of guys on the team. He tried to do a bit too much last year in the regular. There were times when he tried to made plays on some possessions and forced things a bit.

If Kyrie is injured, the smart play is probably to slide Waiters to the starting point position and then play Miller as the starting two. The only thing that really changes in that scenario is that Waiters has the ball in his hands more.
