Cavs Training Camp (roster down to 15)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
How dion does and his attitude with the group will be interesting that's for sure.

I think what this overlooks is that Sefolosha started mostly for defensive reasons. He was the lockdown defender on OKC that they could put on the other team's best wing to keep Durant fresh. If you start Miller or Allen, you're basically putting all of the defensive pressure on LeBron, which will wear him down just like it did in Miami last year. Dion is actually a solid defender, has the potential to be a very good one, and can defend three positions. It makes more sense to start him in a line-up with a defensive liability like Kyrie than it does Miller or Allen, neither of whom can defend well at this point in their careers.

Not to mention that OKC team didn't win shit. If our goal is to lose in the Finals, then sure, let's emulate them.

I want dion starting as well.

I responded to your other post by calling it nonsense Because you said kyrie was "star struck" about lebron coming back. Whereas dion was all hard and tuff.

Oh cool cool but you better go re watch those games I felt like Ki shut it down and Dion kept trying to shove the ball down their throat. He takes things personally. KI eh not so much he is full of his own brilliance..

Now if they let KI wear that black face mask he takes on that Batman swagger not sure WTH was with him and that mask.

Unless they changed the rules, they still count towards your 15 active roster spots. Them being in Canton is the alternative to them sitting in suits on the bench as 'inactive' each game. You have 15 roster spots and dress 12 per game.
The rule change is that the last two players waived before training camp ends have the right to skip the d-league draft and go straight to the team's affiliate. It has become common practice for teams to invite players to training camp that they want on their d-league affiliate in the last 3 years.

Dion Waiters = Jason Terry

This is an interesting debate. When the Mavs took the title in 2011. Terry came off the bench, behind Deshawn Stevenson for a good part of the year, later JJ Barea started alongside Kidd.

Now the popular notion is that we run Miller into the ground by starting him. Not really, when you know Dion can get you 32 solid minutes a night. Deshawn only played the first 6 or so minutes of both halves setting the tone defensively early. Not saying you pigeonhole Miller to those 12 minutes a night, but its doable without running the guy into the ground. If Allen decides to play, then Dion can slide over to some PG minutes as well.

I think you just have to get everyone on the team, to think team first and it's basketball.

While that may be true, if those individuals have guaranteed NBA rookie contracts, couldn't another team just take them? For example, if we cut Harris in camp, wouldn't he then be subject to waivers and then become a free agent if he clears?

Isn't this example more suited to those invitees to training camp without a contract or those on non-guaranteed NBA minimum salary?

That scenario is different from the practice of sending first and second year players from your 15 man roster to play in the D-League rather than rack up DNP's while wearing a suit.

Well, it happened. It all happened. Time to go to work, boys. The F.O. and ownership(with a huge assist from Bron and Rich Paul) did their jobs. Time for the coaches and players to do theirs.

Jersey #'s for training camp (maybe onward). That's if no one is traded or cut.

Alex Kirk: #53
Dwight Powell: #51
Brendan Haywood: #33
Erik Murphy: #31
John Lucas III: #5
Malcolm Thomas: #4

The "directly to D-league" scenario is different than the D-league "send downs". The rules changed for send downs too. The players sent down to D-league still get NBA money and still count against the roster limit, but teams have unlimited "send downs", and they can send down vets or rookies.

The "directly to D-league" scenario was designed to create a tighter bond for the fans between the NBA team and the D-league team. You might be more tempted to check a box score or buy a ticket if you remember one of the guys from NBA pre-season. It also opens up a door for circumventing d-league max salary. Max salary there is like $40K + stipend, less than 1/10th of NBA min salary. So the Cavs give Kirk a min salary contract with $50K in guaranteed, he gets paid, and then he should be more amicable to staying in Canton instead of Europe or another D-League team if he gets cut. He doesn't have to go to Canton if he doesn't want to, but in practice, the guys have been taking the money and then going to Canton for the last couple years.

There are hazards with the "Direct to d-league" process. Yes, the players could get claimed by another team during waivers, guaranteed contract or not. Once the player clears waivers and sign a D-league contract, any NBA team can call up that player on a 10 day or min salary contract and the player would have to go regardless of what the Cavs want. However we are talking about players like Alex Kirk and Kevin Jones. The risk of any team claiming Alex Kirk is low and the Cavs loss would seem small right now if they lost him. Any time any undrafted rookie makes any NBA team, you gotta pat them on the back and say "Great job, you beat the odds" and wish them well because there are 50 Micheal Eric's for each Dellavedova.

Powell might be different. The Cavs have his draft rights, but it's not clear how much the Cavs like him. If Cavs were planning on signing him to a contract after the summer league, then they were, and they did. The other possibility is that the calendar moved into the second 1/2 of August, Powell looked at his options and then asked for his required tender, which forced the Cavs to give him a contract or give up his draft rights. If that's the case, he could be more likely to get cut in training camp and less likely to sign a contract in Canton.

All of this is different than "training camp invites". Training camp invites fall under the "summer contract" parts of the CBA and are different animals. Those fall under the same rules as workout invites and summer league teams. I would not be surprised to see Blatt use his connections to bring over 1 or 2 players currently under contract in Europe to participate in the Cavs training camp as "summer contracts".

Nick Borges reviewed the currently signed UDFs ( undrafted free agents) and thinks Kirk's got a pretty good chance to make an NBA roster.

http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/nba/rumors/post?id=29018

Of this group, Kirk, Moreland, Murry and Cherry might have the best chances to make an opening-night roster.

And Finnan reported this:
http://www.news-herald.com/sports/2...for-kevin-love-trade-was-angst-ridden-30-days

Griffin said he’s in search of a backup center and maybe a third-string point guard.

“We’re not done by a long shot in terms of what we have to add to the team,” he said. “We would love to add someone that is more of a rim protector for us. Maybe even a backup point guard is something we’ll look at.”

Kirk maybe good for his size and ability to stretch the floor. Leave Tristan, Varejao, or Love to rebound the ball and let Kirk stand in the paint. This could maybe work.

A poor man's Spencer Hawes.

I think if we get someone of Ray's caliber off the bench Dion could start but if not we could use Dion for bench scoring. While Miller isn't a defensive stopper, he gives you more than 3s. He's an above avg rebounder and passer. He'll hustle just as much as AV and Love. Still, I think training camp will decide
