Cavs Training Camp (roster down to 15)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Training camp roster down to 17 with the Bogans trade

Training camp roster down to 17 with the Bogans trade

and now 16 if Chris Crawford is waived.
  • PG: Kyrie Irving / Dellavedova / A.J. Price
  • SG: Dion Waiters / Mike Miller / Joe Harris
  • SF: Lebron James / James Jones / Keith Bogans
  • PF: Kevin Love / Tristan Thompson / Shawn Marion
  • C: Anderson Varejao / Brendan Haywood / Alex Kirk / Louis Amundson

Assuming Kirk is cut during camp and Amundson makes it... we would still have a final spot open for Allen
Looks Like we went from a very very young team to a vet team in one off season ready to win the whole thing:chuckle:

I would guess Price and Kirk get cut(and Kirk maybe thens signs with Canton?)

That has us at 14, with the open spot for Allen or a bought out player later in the year.

With Kyrie, Delly + Dion and LeBrons playmaking abilities, not sure what the need for a 3rd PG would be.

Or a player waived during training camp? Cavs could always waive someone to make a spot for Allen later. They don't need to keep the spot open if they're willing to eat the contract (which they appear ready to do).

I think it could be important, given the new coach and new system, to have a 3rd PG to play PG in practice when Irving/Dellavedova have to sit for any reason. No need to push a bunch of people out of position when one has to sit out. It would also be nice to have either 1) a veteran PG who could teach them something or 2) a quicker defensive PG who could come into games where the opposing PG is too fast for Dellavedova to handle.

Thanks Wuck. So they key is not to necessarily have the 15th spot open, but just to have the 15th spot be an unguaranteed deal like Kirk or Price?

As far as I understand, any player can be waived--regardless of whether the contract is guaranteed or nonguaranteed. I'm thinking of the various players who get waived after the trade deadline and then picked up by other teams. The waiving team is still responsible for paying the guaranteed money and it still counts toward the salary cap (unless another team claims the player before the player clears waivers and thus assumes the contract too). A lot of players don't get claimed because most teams don't have enough money to fit the contract under the salary cap.

I think the Cavs could waive anyone (Kirk, Price, Harris, etc.) to make room for Allen as long as they were willing to eat the contract and able to add a new vet-min contract. If I'm wrong about this, blame it on the long off-season.

You got that right. The only other things to note are:
1) often teams just trade cash & the contract to a team with cap space for a heavily protected pick and let the othe team do the waive if there are cap space or luxury tax issues, but the league office has been scrutinizing those "asymmetric" trades more closely lately.
2) there is also the manditory stretch buyout provision that affects all new contracts signed since 2011, but that's a bit esoteric.

Full training camp summary--

The guys might have to wear nametags for the first few days of camp considering only five (Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters, Tristan Thompson, Anderson Varejao and Matthew Dellavedova) of the 16 invited were with the team last year.

The training-camp squad consists of players with 561 playoff games, eight NBA titles, and 19 All-Star game appearances.

It's a blend of youngsters and veterans. New head coach David Blatt will have his hands full trying to get the pieces to fit together quickly in a season with championship aspirations.

The roster will be trimmed down at the end of the October, but this is how the roster looks heading into Saturday .......
Quick summary of article:
  • Irving is fresh off a summer where he received a contract extension and helped Team USA win gold at the World Cup of Basketball
  • Delly has been working on his point-guard skills to possibly be Irving's backup
  • Price, a five-year veteran, played with the Minnesota Timberwolves last season
  • Waiters has made mention in the past his desire to start, but may continue his sixth-man role after other playoff-tested veterans were added this summer.
  • Miller is here for two main reasons: shooting and leadership
  • Harris seems to possess the qualities Griffin wants on the perimeter. He can also pass and rebound for a player his size. The Cavs like his basketball IQ, which comes from being a coach's son
  • Bogans instantly becomes a trade chip for the Cavs. His playing time will be scarce considering the depth on the perimeter.
  • James' basketball IQ and team-first mentality will make things easier on his teammates
  • Marion will also fit well in the Cavs' up-tempo offense, being able to run the court and finish in transition.
  • Jones won't see much court time in Cleveland because of the depth on the wing. However, his signing will help in the locker room
  • Love's role will shift, and his numbers will unsurprisingly decline, but his impact will be felt.
  • Thompson will likely be Love's backup, but could also push for minutes as an undersized but bouncy center.
  • Amundson hasn't played eight years in the NBA because of his offensive prowess. Hustle is his calling card.
  • Varejao is better coming off the bench. However, depth at center is one area where the Cavs are pretty thin, so he will likely be forced into the starting lineup.
  • Haywood .... is expected to be on the court Saturday
  • For Kirk, his role will be simple if he makes the squad: protect the rim and be strong in the paint

I wonder if they will have any video or anything of training camp. Doesn't it start today?

I would think they would. Yes, it starts today. I'm sure SportsCenter will have a segment about it or a video on Cavs.com will be up.
