Changing the Rules on Fouls & Freethrows

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They could just change the rule to off ball intentional foul freethrows can be shot by any player on the floor.

the only fouls that really annoy me are the ones where the offensive player initiates it and there is literally nothing a defender can do to prevent a foul getting called on him

like an offensive player just running into a defensive player gets called a foul

there needs to be a lot more no-calls IMO

I think you're referring to the James Harden rule.

Blatt sure knows how to make reports feel important---

BOSTON: David Blatt doesn’t like the league’s rules regarding flagrant fouls and intentional fouls, i.e. Hack-a-Shaq, but he isn’t ready to reveal his solutions.

“It’s not that we’re not doing a good job. The referees are calling it and it’s being interpreted the way it’s supposed to be,” he said. “I just think the rules themselves should be changed.”
...
Blatt didn’t offer specifics, but clearly doesn’t like the idea of intentionally fouling poor free-throw shooters just to send them to the line. It is a topic that has become a focal point in recent days after the San Antonio Spurs and coach Gregg Popovich, famous for doing it against Shaquille O’Neal, are now doing it to DeAndre Jordan in their series against the Los Angeles Clippers.
...
The Celtics have even tried it a bit with Tristan Thompson, who is a career 63 percent shooter from the line.

Asked if the idea is unsavory, Blatt said: “I think it’s more than unsavory. I really think that’s something that needs to be revisited and changed. When the right people ask me how and what I would do, then I’ll tell them what I think.”

Blatt, however, concedes the Cavs have used the same strategy at times this season and James said he has no problem with the concept.

“It’s part of the game,” he said. “If it’s something that’s part of the game and it’s part of the game plan, then go for it.”

NBA News: Adam Silver On Tanking, Resting Players, Hack-a-Shaq

On Hack-a-Shaq strategy

I’ve heard from some of the greatest at our owners meetings, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird has attended those meetings and their view is guys have to make their free throws and that’s influenced me. At my old job, I used to run NBA entertainment, I used to say we’ve got to do away with this because it’s bad television. The other thing I’ve learned is that when you actually then go look at the ratings, people are not tuning out. It’s a fascinating strategy for a lot of fans and also you and I talk a lot about youth basketball, I keep getting emails from youth coaches saying make it matter, make guys have to hit their free throws so I’m reluctant to make that change, I would say once again we’re going to discuss it at the competition committee and with our general mangers, and to make that change requires approval of a super majority of the owners. 2/3 of the owners have to vote that change in, so I don’t think it’s going to come quickly. I think we’ve got to study it, we’ve got to look at all the data. But my sense is that we should leave it alone for now.

This is not changing...as it shouldn't.

just like you leave Tony Allen wide open for 3 the entire game or back off Joakim Noah because he cant hit a shot to save his life, You exploit opponents weakness's. if the opponents weakness is FT's you should be able to exploit that just like you exploit everything else.

letting a 34% ft shooter off the hook just because its "boring to watch" is plain stupid....

besides if they do change it players/coaches will still find a way to do it via pushing hard off screens or "accidentally running into him" ect.... smart players will find a way to foul so there is no way to inforce the rule

Plus, it's still entertaining basketball. It becomes a drama of whether the player can hit his shots or not and forces the coach's hand as to whether he wants to keep that player out there or not.

Also...these guys have no excuses to be shooting FTs that poorly. The "my hands are too big" argument is bullshit, because there have been plenty of 7'0+ guys with huge hands that have been excellent FT shooters. And that includes Z. It's a repetition and practice thing.

ANYONE that can shoot a basketball is capable of being a good FT shooter with enough practice and reps. These guys just don't want to commit time to it.

To your point, MJ's hands were monstrous.

Right.

If anything, hands that are too SMALL would affect whether they shoot FTs well or not.

But even then, tons of 10 and under kids are out there hitting 15-20 FTs in a row.
