Channing Frye

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
People are talking up Frye far too much.

Guy couldn't get minutes in Orlando but he's gonna be the piece that puts us over the top?

Hope there's another move for a wing happening. Otherwise this barely moves the needle.
Yep people want to keep Andy who's getting no minutes.. so why does it matter. Fact is frye can stretch the floor and hit the 3. Especially stretch the floor when love is out and still keep a big in the game. To me, it's a great deal.

@mcten: Further details on Frye/Varejao deal per source: Cunningham from CLE to ORL; Cavs send conditional 1st to POR & 2nd Rd pick from POR to ORL

2nd is what I read

I thought I read that too, but here is what I gathered. The 2nd is what Portland gave Orlando. We gave up a conditional first. My guess is it is heavily protected. Also CAVS will save $10m this year. My guess is we will use some of it to sign a buyout player.

Andy will likely be waived.

Overall Channing Frye is a below average defender. Opponents shoot .8% better against him than they average.

The guy is deadly when left wide-open. He averages 51.7% on wide-open threes with a 73.2% eFG% on all wide-open shots, and averages 40.7% on catch-and-shoot 3s with a 56.5% eFG% on all catch-and-shoot shots.

Don't expect Frye to make or break the season. I don't think this is a trade that puts us into the top-tier (Warriors, Spurs) of teams; but, it does let us match up much better against the top-tier of teams. Overall it is a net positive, even though I'm sad to lose Andy.

I get the logic but have to admit a little down: AV and Cunningham were two of my favorite Cavs. With all the prima donnas on this team, there were guys you could root for unconditionally (the guy with relentless motor and the guy who worked to find a place in the league)

We seem to be going for more offense as well: this places a lot of pressure on Irving/Love plus Lebron, TT, Moz, Shumper, JR and the rest to cover for them. Looks like we're not going to get much help on that side of the court

I think it's hilarious that Frye shoots 90% from the free throw line but per 36 minutes he only shoots 1.0 free throws. So hey, if he ever gained some aggressiveness and got fouled, he'd be money.

FYI for those concerned about Frye and Love playing together. Nylon Calculus has Timo giving up a 48% FG percentage on contested shots at the rim this year. Frye is giving up 47.2%...he just became our best rim protector from a % standpoint when contesting shots (though he contests shots at a much lower %).

Yeah, really dont see this move helping us other than spacing the floor with size. Hopefully its not our only move.

Will this dude ride the bench? How quick before they experiment and throw him out there in a non-garbage situation?

Well when Lebron moves to the 4 in small ball: should be pretty interesting.

Frye, Lebron, Irving, Shump or JR, plus Delly? Definitely designed to make driving lanes for Lebron and Irving

Two separate trades makes sense -

AV + 1st to POR for 2nd. Creates new $9.3M trade exception.

Cunny + 2nd to ORL for Frye who is absorbed into the Heywood exception.

When all is said and done, they'll have three exceptions expiring in July - Harris ($845k, essentially worthless), Miller ($2.8M) and the rest of Heywoods ($2.3). They'll also have Andy's which would be good through next February.

Plus they've saved ~$10M in salary and tax.

Also, they don't have a draft pick to trade until 2020.......

How SCARED is Golden State right now tho?

Yeah, Frye uses his length and wingspan very wisely. He's not a gifted defender, lacks the natural speed, but he is smart with how he uses his body. It's what makes him a good team defender.
