Re: Who is our head coach in the 2103 Opener
Mangini was a good coach. Not great, but passable. Definitely better than Shurmur. He was a terrible talent evaluator and had too much control here too early, but had Lerner had a disciplined front office, he would have been a good hire. For as much hate as Holmgren gets, I think he's managed to make the executive branch of the Browns a legit office. There is structure, there is a plan, and we can now hold the right people accountable. He's been too loyal to his guys, and I think he needs to go for the Shurmur hire, but the Browns are still better off because they hired Holmgren.
The one good thing I see in all of this is that Joe Banner is the guy coming in to replace Holmgren. Bringing in another WCO guy means we shouldn't need to alter our personnel. As far as the next Browns coach, I think it'll most likely be one of:
Childress
Jauron
Reid
Gruden
With Gruden being by far the most coveted but least likely guy to take the job. I'd bet Haslam will make a monetary offer that will be hard for Gruden to turn down, but if Gruden didn't want to coach this team for his mentor Holmgren, I doubt he'll do it for the organization that fires Holmgren. We'll see I guess. But Chilly and Jauron both have HC experience with mixed results each. They're also already familiar with our personnel, and the transition would be an easy one. If I was a gambling man, I'd bet on one of those guys getting to take the reins after Haslam takes over, and if they can show anything before the end of the season, they can probably earn their job.
