Cleveland Browns Quarterback Position

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Washington: Mariota is a lot like RG3 in terms of readiness and style of play. Why would they want him? Probably the 'trade up' spot for a team that wants MM

We can all wish Mariota is there at 12, but while I don't think the Browns should sell the farm for a guy who may not be NFL ready, my nickel is on the trade up happening right here as well. Might be the Browns, might be another team.

I think his footwork is raw, but I'd never thought I'd see it described as slow.
Icm finally trying to watch them, so I watched MM right before Winston. Comparing the two.. It seemed slow to me. Heh. He looked like he was running through the throwing drills at half speed, still learning his steps. I wonder if there's any data on how long out takes him to get to his 5th step vs others. Probably not. Either way.. Going to need done work/experience. To each their own. I wouldn't be disappointed at all in drafting him.

I mean at the end of the day it is a Pro Day, full speed isn't exactly the tone set at these types of events.

Going to put Mariota in a comfort zone and make him look good.

Now, if he wore his pads and came out to Drake, I'd have been much more impressed.

Aren't a ton of options out there with that type of ammunition and the need to acquire.

Could absolutely see a scenario like last year.

One thing is for sure, it's not even a "wish" that Mariota would be there. I'd argue that the odds are greater that he is there.

PARTIALLY TRUE

It would only be truely impressive if he made his throws while being defended by a broom

I can't see teams passing in him just because of the Pro Day though. They did that last year with Ted and they all ended up looking silly. I wouldn't complain if he did but I just can't see him sliding like that.

Yes. Being accurate while being serenaded by Drake's voice, thus prompting tears, would be quite impressive. You don't think he wore the helmet last year to look professional, do you? :chuckle:

Definitely agree, I don't think it gives teams anything they haven't already seen on the field.

I'm just speaking to Phills' point about needs throughout the early first round and the teams behind Cleveland who may lack the necessary assets for a jump of that magnitude.

You've got a scenario where if the Jets don't take him at six, he's probably making it to 12.

If Tenn and the Jets pass on him then yes as the board is stacked, he falls to the Browns at 12. However; he's much more in the range of New Orleans at 13 and 31 if he's in the 7-11 range. The Browns can trump any offer, the question remains, do they want to.

It seems as though Brees is calling the shots with many of these personnel moves in New Orleans, I can't imagine them working towards replacing him with a pick that early knowing he won't be able to play for two more years.

I just find it very unlikely that the Jets pass on Mariota, and I think all the other teams know it. I think Geno has worn out his welcome in New York and Fitzpatrick was brought on to be a bridge QB/ high end backup. But, nobody nails the first 19 picks of the draft perfectly. Plenty can happen, especially with all the movement up and down we saw the past three drafts.

I was so devastated when we passed on Teddy at 22 last year. If Mariota were to fall to 12 (still vehemently disagree that this even has a remote possibility of happening, let alone it being the likely scenario) and the Browns were to pass on him, I'd start having violently dark thoughts.

Just go get this kid and lock up a QB prospect with nice physical gifts and an undeniably strong head on his shoulders.

Mariota also had familiarity with the guy running the throwing session. Browns quarterbacks coach Kevin O’Connell trained Mariota in San Diego leading up to the combine before being hired by Cleveland on Feb. 17.
“He’s been a tremendous help to me,” Mariota said of O’Connell. “He always harped on me about footwork and keeping my base solid wherever I was moving in the pocket. It’s tough to see that at pro day, but it’s stuff I’ve been working on.”

With the Eagles essentially out of the running, I think it's killed a lot of the potential leverage these teams have in trade talks. I think that's why Clayton got fed "the Redskins will take Mariota at #5" line and Peter King was given "don't count the Titans out at #2 for Mariota" within a day or two of the Bradford trade. They're trying to manufacture a market but no one is going to buy it.

That said, on the off chance that the Jets want him or another team might leap us, I'd be willing to trade up to #5 or so. So long as we're not giving up a future 1st, I think it's a move that can be justified.

Right now, we're either pinning our hopes to a 35 year old journeyman, waiting for a problem child to get out of rehab and praying he gets his shit together or looking to a UDFA with a noodle arm. We have one of the worst QB situations in the NFL. I don't blame free agents for not wanting to come here and guys like Cameron for leaving... we're dead in the water without a QB.

Mariota might require some work but at least we know he'll put it in and drafting him would give us more hope for the future than any WR or DT could.

I don't see any reason why the Jets wouldn't take him. Their new FO and HC have no ties to Geno. If Farmar and Pettine want MM, I feel we got to deal with Jacksonville at 3 or Oakland at 4. I don't want to give up future 1st rounders, but at the same time if Farmar and Pettine want to roll it with MM, they should trade as long as our future picks aren't depleted. We got too many holes to fill to give up all our premium picks. If we could manage a trade that we give up our 2 1's this year and a future 2nd, I'd consider it long and hard.

In all honesty though, I'd prefer to keep all our picks and grab someone like Petty or Hundley in the late 1st or early 2nd round.
