Cleveland Browns Quarterback Position

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Quote me stats all you want, Jason Campbell is a loser. He is mentally weak and half the time doesn't want to be on the football field.

Jason Campbell's path of destruction...

Not only does he suck, he's a verified cancer and bad influence on the rest of the team.

Whatever. I am not going to waste time building a case for Campbell; there are counterpoints to be made, but I'll leave that to his agent.

Bottom line is he is not a top flight NFL quarterback, but perhaps you should take another look at that UFA list (filled with "losers", BTW) and see what your options really are for a veteran quarterback for your CLE Browns.

I love Cleveland. Such a train wreck of a franchise that Jason Campbell is a preference for some at quarterback.

Cross off Luck as a potential free agent addition.

Pay attention to what he gets, though. It could become the starting point for Manziel's inevitable contract extension.

Chicago, Jets, Buffalo have all been mentioned in the last two days as possibilities for Hoyer. Some discussion of Sam Bradford getting released, which would be a Godsend for the Browns options.

Another argument for Bradford is that the guy has never had even a decent offensive line accompanied by zero receiver talent.

Health is obviously the biggest issue, but he's worth a flier. He's got the talent to be a very good QB and at worst he'd be a stop gap capable of leading us to the playoffs at 10-6 or so.

I know Bradford shouldn't get a big contract, but someone is going to give it to him if he's released. I'd love to sign him to a one-year "prove it" contract, but some QB-desperate team will give him years and money. An oft-injured, potentially washed-up Carson Palmer was worth two first-round picks a few years ago. The free agent QB market is dismal, so someone will take a risk and offer multiple years and significant money to Bradford.

Well, I'd take a flyer on Aaron Wroggers. To be fair, our Qb's are a joke anyway. So why not just sign a comedian? At least he looks more like a real Qb than any we've had.

Isn't that why we got Johnny?

IMO Bradford should be the target. He's young enough at 27 years old that he still has a career in front of him and he's old enough to have gone through all of his young QB mistakes. He has shown signs the last 2 years that he's starting to put it together. The problem is, can he stay on the field? Frankly, the options are so bad the Browns HAVE to take the risk. Arizona and KC has shown how you can take a less than desirable QB who still has skills (Palmer & Smith) and turn bad teams into playoff contenders. Will Bradford win you a super bowl or even a playoff game? Maybe not but I bet if he stays healthy he can keep you in playoff contention all year.

We all know the Browns problem over the last 15 years has always been QB. We've never had a QB who could even be average for an extended period of time. I looked back tonight because I like to torture myself, to see just how bad the position has been. If you go by single season QB Rating, Derek Anderson had the best QB season of any Brown since 1999. His 82.5 mark was good enough for 17th in the league that year. THAT'S THE HIGHEST ANY BROWN HAS EVER BEEN SINCE 1999! We average the 25th rated passer every year. It's remarkable how many swings and misses we've had without even making contact.

Putting someone respectable like Bradford in there would do wonders. We won 7 games this year with the 31st ranked passer and Manziel. Imagine if we had even a middle of the road guy behind center.

It may take a 2-3 year deal if Bradford becomes available and some big guaranteed money but we have the cap and we have no other options at QB. My plan would be to get the highest ceiling guy possible and develop a young QB. Maybe you take Hundley in the 2nd round. Maybe you stick with Manziel this year. Maybe you draft a QB in rd 1 next year but at least you have Bradford to take big boy snaps and win you some damn football games.

Well, ain't that some shit?

Admitting it's not going to be easy, a person familiar with the Eagles' offseason plans says the team "is going to try'' to move up in the NFL Draft to select Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.

The Eagles have the 20th overall pick — and Mariota, who could go as high as No. 1, is not expected to fall out of the top five picks. The first day of the draft is April 30.

"From No. 20, it's certainly not going to be easy,'' said the person, who requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak on the subject. "It's probably going to take moving up twice to do it. There's going to be some wheeling and dealing involved.''

Asked if he thought it could happen, the response was telling.

"Can it happen?'' he asked. "I don't know. But they're going to try.''

Eagles head coach Chip Kelly recruited Mariota to Oregon and coached him for his first two years there. Kelly has not hidden his feelings about the quarterback, calling him the "most talented kid I coached in college," while reminding reporters he predicted Mariota would win the Heisman Trophy when he saw him as a freshman. (Mariota won the award in 2014.) Most recently, Kelly compared Mariota to future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning.

Mariota was quoted as saying it would be fun to be with his old college coach again.

"Obviously, [with] my relationship with Coach Kelly, it'd be a lot of fun to be a part of that offense and be a part of that team," Mariota said.

With the recent shuffling of the Eagles' front office, Kelly now has the final say on personnel matters, answering only to owner Jeffrey Lurie, who writes the checks.

"That makes it a little easier,'' the person said. "There isn't anyone in (Kelly's) way.''

What it would take to move from No. 20 to the top five has been debated. One NFL personnel executive told NJ Advanced Media a month ago that he would ask for a No. 1 and a No. 2 this year, a No. 1 next year and running back LeSean McCoy.

Some have speculated it would take a package of at least three first-round picks and additional picks. Others have thrown out the idea of a "Mike Ditka'' deal in which the Eagles would send all of their 2015 picks to a team for the chance to land Mariota, much like the former New Orleans Saints head coach did in 1999 in order to select Texas running back Ricky Williams.

Teams making bold moves to acquire a certain player have seen it backfire on them, however. The Saints failed to win after the historic trade and it cost Ditka his job. But the Redskins, who acquired the picks, struggled, too. They won the NFC East in 1999, then missed the playoffs the next five seasons.

The Redskins also were involved in another draft mega-deal when they traded up with the St. Louis Rams to select quarterback Robert Griffin III. In addition to swapping picks with the Rams, the Redskins traded away two first-round picks and a second-round selection.

The Redskins won the NFC East with a healthy RGIII in his rookie year, but injuries and Griffin's regression have made the deal look bad since. Despite stocking up on draft picks, the Rams have had three straight losing seasons.

In 2004, the Giants traded for quarterback Eli Manning and won two Super Bowls.

In 1983, Denver gave up a mix of picks and players to obtain the rights to quarterback John Elway and that worked out pretty well for the Broncos, who appeared in five Super Bowls with Elway at quarterback, winning two.
