Cleveland Browns Quarterback Position

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Don't think I would move the draft picks for Mariota, but I would take him if he fell to 12.

However, if I were considering moving both picks for a QB this year (I'd even generously consider throwing in Manziel), I would circle around to the 49ers with their deteriorating situation and see if they would reconsider moving Kapernick. Similar strengths and weaknesses as MM with the strengths at a much higher level (arm, athleticism), with further development potential, high-level NFL playoff experience and limited injury history.

Maybe they want to start over and get out from under the contract (which is structured in a way that would not unduly hamstring CLE if it didn't work out). Seems like a much better option instead of rolling the dice on a rookie.

No way in hell the Browns are trading 3 first-round picks for the 3 inch taller, good guy version of Johnny.

If he's there at 12 I would maybe consider it, but I would still think it would be better to trade back.

The guy just isn't accurate enough, and he is one Joey Bosa type hit from being out for awhile.

I'm more in line with Fowler's take, aside from the moronic part about waiting and seeing if Manziel can play:

That’s why the Browns have at least four options that seem more sensible than an all-in aggressive play on Mariota.

1, See if Mariota falls past the Jets at 6 then consider a move up.
2. Let Mariota fall to you at 12.
3. Dangle that No. 19 overall pick to Chip Kelly for Sam Bradford.
4. Do the best you can with Josh McCown, Johnny Manziel, and possibly Bryce Petty while loading up for 2016.

That last option won’t be attractive for Browns fans, but it enables the team to the complete the roster overhaul then comb what’s considered a good 2016 quarterback stable. Michigan State’s Connor Cook, Penn State’s Christian Hackenberg and Ohio State’s Cardale Jones should be available. This gives the Browns one more chance to see the Manziel project through.

Manziel's play in 2014 was woeful. But that's seven quarters of woeful play, not seven games. Dumping a first-round quarterback after seven quarters goes against everything a build-through-the-draft GM stands for.

Yes, most playoff runs are made with stellar quarterbacks. But improvement is still attainable with average quarterback play, at least for a year. The Texans and Bills won nine games apiece last year with this quarterback stable – Kyle Orton, EJ Manuel, Ryan Mallett, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum.

It’s not that you can’t win without a quarterback; you can’t win big.

Couple the offense with a receiver from the first two rounds. Run the ball a lot and hope for the best. Add offensive line depth.

Get the right quarterback if he comes to you, or if you absolutely love him, consider him a franchise-saver.
Don’t force it.

If Mariota falls to seven, then you have something.

Twelve to 2 will hurt worse than you’d think, especially as Mariota could require patience to grasp an NFL system.

Why is that so moronic?

Would you dump a stock that you have made a significant investment in at the first sign of trouble or play out the long game?

Last season Johnny was awful. We don't know what rehab Johnny will be like though.

With the Browns' track record at QB, even if they snag Mariota (they won't) it would find a way to backfire on them.

I am not as excited about Mariota as most are.

Titans continue to shop their pick as the Mariota sweepstakes ticket and insist they have their QB of the future in Mettenberger. The Browns have the most assets to win the sweepstakes, but I wonder if at some point Tennessee realizes they are building around Zach Mettenberger.

And I'm in no way encouraging the Browns to pin their hopes on Manziel to suddenly put it all together. I will continue to consider building around a guy who lacks the maturity, mentality and physical ability to play in the NFL moronic.

There is no significant investment, if you can move him for value, you do it.

Pretending he's going to be something he's not will get you nowhere.

NFL scouts are in a really tough spot with assessing quarterbacks. You can fairly easily assess how every other position translates from the spread college offense to a pro style offense, but quarterbacks are asked to do vastly different things in a WCO compared to the spread.

The reason I was hoping the Browns would get a quality bridge veteran QB is that a case like Mariota will happen over and over as long as top college programs keep running a spread and top high school QB prospects keep committing to spread offense schools. But the Browns jumped on McCown.

Rizzo said he was told by someone in the NFC West (I'm thinking Rams) that the Browns are hot on the trail for a QB this week at the NFL meetings

It's pretty clear the locker room wants nothing to do with Manziel and it would be better for everyone involved for a new "project" at QB.
