Cleveland Browns Quarterback Position

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So what are people's thoughts on Petty? I admittedly didn't watch much Baylor this year.

I mean, you have to consider any guy who is an upgrade to what we have right now. Foles is a clear upgrade. I agree with boobie that he probably isn't a long-term solution, but simply getting an average QB would go a long way toward making us respectable on offense.

Really good size for QB. Shade under 6'3" and 230lbs. Good arm strength, not great, but able to make throws anywhere on field. He did play in a pass heavy offense, but in the games I watched, was able to play under center as well. Not dead on with his accuracy, seems his footwork needs improved, but can still fit the seam from time to time. Seems to have a good head on his shoulders. He needs coached, but I think he'd be a nice 2nd day draft pick. Seems like a typical 3rd rounder, but probably someone we would have to reach for in the 2nd. I don't think he'd be ready to start the year in game 1, seems more like the QB who you want to groom. Would really be idea if we had a smart vet to groom him.

Depends on how his stock rises over the next couple months. If he skyrockets, probably out of our reach. Not really someone who you take in the middle of the 1st where we sit. Last couple picks of 1st round? Maybe.

Well then Foles isn't your guy, not if he isn't a long term answer. In order to get him we'd have to make a move with Philly that would put them in position to jump up even further for Mariota. Are you willing to give up our first pick for a guy who isn't the long term answer?

Other than having a stronger arm, being more mobile, being four years younger, 5-6% points of completions, 18 points of QB rating....nah, there's not that much separating him from Brian Hoyer.

Foles is a modest upgrade to the Browns, but I don't necessarily think he's a long-term solution either. Willing to let him prove it while on that rookie deal.

It is simply impossible to isolate the quarterback from the scheme in this situation. Shanahan's methodical play action and longer throws have little in common with Kelly's breakneck pace with multiple short-route options at the line. It is looking like Hoyer is going to be in a short-term starting QB situation at the start of the fall for somebody, as will Foles. Chances are they will both be in vastly different systems then the past two years. Let's take up the discussion then.

Okay he has a few small points he is "better" at than Hoyer, but you said it... modest upgrade. He is nothing we wanna fuck with. A modest upgrade over Hoyer is still a fart sandwich.

Good point and I agree. I'd personally be a fan of getting Foles, but it's unrealistic if the Browns must give up a 1st rounder in return. He's an upgrade from Hoyer, but he also has the chance to flame out.. In a world where Kevin Kolb was traded for a 2nd rounder and Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable giving up more than a conditional 3rd..

Here's the problem with Foles: He's an upgrade but he's not a long term solution and we'd have to treat him like he's a long-term solution.

We'd probably have to give up at least a 2nd and if we're doing that, we're probably going to want an extension in place so he doesn't leave in FA next year or force us to franchise him at some absurd number. If you lock in a guy who isn't a long term solution, suddenly you're in Bengal land with Andy Dalton. No thanks.

I'd rather pony up a bit more for Mariota or get a guy like Petty who will come at a cheaper price.

A story to keep your eye on.

Report: Rams interested in trading for Nick Foles

Last year, the Eagles made one of the most surprising moves of the offseason when they released receiver DeSean Jackson. This year, the Eagles may again make a surprising move by getting rid of starting quarterback Nick Foles.

Multiple stories have surfaced this month indicating that Eagles coach Chip Kelly is interested in moving on from Foles, especially if Kelly could replace Foles with his old Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. The latest report comes from NJ.com, which says that possible suitors are beginning to emerge, and the Rams have interest in Foles.

The Rams have indicated that they would like quarterback Sam Bradford to return this year, but only at the right price. If the Rams can’t convince Bradford to take a significant pay cut from the $13 million he’s scheduled to make this year, they’ll surely release him, and then trading for Foles could make sense.

The question, however, is whether it would make sense for the Eagles. If Kelly is going to get rid of Foles, he has to be confident he can acquire someone better. Unless the Eagles are able to move up in the draft and get Mariota in three months, trading Foles feels like an odd move.

Bryce Petty at the Senior Bowl

Dane Brugler...

Entering Senior Bowl week, the stage was set for Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty to prove to NFL scouts that he has the skill set to start at the next level in a pro-style scheme. And while he showed some improvements during practice, more questions than answers remain when it comes to Petty's future in the NFL.

During the morning practice Wednesday, Petty did a nice job with his footwork, showing good movements skills with his three and five step drops and improved timing with his targets. However, he bobbled several snaps and had a tough time with the process from under center, appearing out of sync and uncomfortable. Petty made some nice throws, but his ball placement was up and down and he also seemed to be thinking too much as he makes the jump from a spread, shotgun offense at Baylor where most his reads came before the snap.

Thrown into this setting it's a tough chore for Petty to learn on the go and read coverages while operating the offense in his drops and from within the pocket. Can he become more comfortable with added reps? Probably. But will Petty ever be comfortable enough to start in the NFL? That's the big question and NFL teams likely won't find that answer here in Mobile.

It hasn't happened since 1994, but unless Petty makes vast improvements the rest of the week and the draft process, there is a good chance the 2015 NFL Draft won't have a senior quarterback drafted in the top-100 picks.

Mike Mayock of the NFL Network questions his accuracy.

Matt Miller of Bleacher Report was on Bull and Fox yesterday and questioned Petty's accuracy & ability to play a pro style offense plus he had these nuggets from his most recent article
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2337836-senior-bowl-2015-matt-millers-scouting-notebook

— In talking to sources about the quarterback class, I've been told by several scouts that they don't have a top-100 grade on anyone other than Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota.

Ugh. This was the worst group of senior quarterbacks I've seen during my time covering the Senior Bowl. All six quarterbacks struggled to make simple throws with ball placement, velocity and touch. Even simple things like taking the snap was a struggle.

I came into the week trying to separate Bryce Petty, Garrett Grayson and Shane Carden for my No. 4 quarterback spot and will go home even more unimpressed with the senior class of passers.

Things look pretty bleak in the draft.

Things look pretty bleak in the draft.

It's a really bad situation for Farmer to be in. Johnny looks like hot garbage and could get people fired if he starts next year. Free agency has slim pickings at best. The draft is incredibly top heavy and absolutely awful after the first two guys are gone.

I don't know if his answer is going to be trading up for Mariota, trading for a veteran or hoping someone gets cut but it doesn't look like there are a whole lot of good options if (and I'd be stunned if he did) Johnny doesn't turn his act around.

Given the public comments Farmer has made about the QB position, I'd be surprised if he used significant assets to move up to take Mariota. No matter how much he loves him.

Foles really doesn't fit what Chip Kelly is trying to do. His lack of mobility limits the Eagles playbook. Remember that the Eagles had originally intended Mike Vick to run Kelly's system, but an injury thrust Foles into a starter role and he was just good enough to get into a Pro Bowl.

I wonder what Foles can do in a pro style offense. I think he took a clear step backward last season with Bill Lazor moving on to Miami. Noodle armed Dirty Sanchez looked as good or better, and his deep ball is worse than Hoyer's.

I can't imagine going into next season with Brian Hoyer or Manziel is an optimal scenario for the guys in Berea.

I don't want Foles either, trust me, it was the system. He's really not that good.
