Cleveland Indians 2018-2019 Offseason Outlook

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Selling off premium talent to a big market team. Self explanatory.

I expect us to ask for the moon and NY to decline, though. There probably is a deal in there I’d do but doubt it happens.

I get that part, but hasn't it typically worked out pretty well?

They traded CC Sabathia to Milwaukee. That trade, which was panned by many at the time, got the Tribe 10 years of Michael Brantley for a few months of Sabathia.

They traded Cliff Lee to Philadelphia. That trade also worked out pretty well, as the Indians have had 9 years and counting of Carrasco for a guy that was dealt again after one year.

The traded Victor Martinez to Boston. He spent 1.5 years in Boston before signing with Detroit, for 5.5 years of Justin Masterson. That deal wasn't the slam dunk that the others were, but it turned out to be a solid deal.

When, in recent history, have they sold off premium talent and not had it work out? The only example I can even think of was Brandon Phillips.

This was luck, he was the last player in deal, considered a throw-in PTBNL -- the Tribe really wanted Matt Laporta who was one of the biggest scrubs to wear a Tribe jersey.

But how do you have CC and Lee going into 2008 and have one of the worst off-seasons that led to that era's demise?

Horrendous drafting that gave the team no depth, weapons to trade and put them into the position that they were in. Obviously since then the drafting has been addressed so we haven't seen a firesale the likes of those couple since then really.

You could throw in the first of these type of deals too, with that being the Bartolo deal which brought us Phillips, Sizemore and Lee which would probably be the best of the deals

Probably my favorite trade. Unfortunately Wedge and Indians gave up on Phillips.

I've heard the luck card played as a way to not give the Indians credit for the deal, and I just don't agree with it. They wanted Brantley, got him, and he panned out in a big way. He may have been considered more of a "lottery ticket" than "sure thing" LaPorta at the time, but the Indians really liked and wanted him.

The answer to your 2008 question is a mixture of injuries and under-performance. Hafner only played in 57 games, Sabathia was pretty mediocre before being dealt, they lost Westbrook after only 5 starts, Fausto/Roberto took a major step back, Betancourt was bad after dominating in 2007, and Perez/Lewis didn't have great years.

Maybe I didn’t explain, but I have zero doubt the Indians could extract a couple good players from NY for one of the best SP in the game. That isn’t really a concern.

i will say this if the tribe is looking at trading kluber you bet your ass they are not only looking for high ceiling contribute now players, they also want high ceiling prospects. Youre probably looking at at least 1 now guy, and 3 prospects.

but i dont think it happens. kluber is worth too much. top 5 AL starter at a fraction of what he is worth

Trading Kluber to NY would be so Indians.

The Indians have pitching, and Kluber isn't getting any younger. Yes hes an excellent pitcher, but with a rotation left of Carasco, Baurer, Clevinger, Beiber you are freakin solid. McKenzie is flying through the minors and is healthy will be joining them sooner than later. There's not much hope with Salazar but if hes healthy, hes a top of the rotation guy.

I have no problem trading Kluber is its the jumpstart of another window.

If dealing Kluber brings back the type of haul it should, I don't really care who he's dealt to. Get the best value you can and worry about what team it is later. The Indians should be trying to maximize the time they spend in October like the Cardinals used to do.

Yes. The Yanks are going to be the Yanks regardless. Kluber is fantastic but he is not such a transcendent player that you have a list of teams you wouldn’t trade him too if the price is right.

Depends on what we get back. Are they getting back win now pieces or future prospects. Either way I would expect to absolutely rape them for a reasonable priced two time Cy Young winner, and the fact that we are trading with a rival which should add to the price.

All right. So who would you ask for?
