Cleveland Indians Offseason News, Notes, and Rumors

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
You're telling me you don't believe Kipnis will ever hit 37 homers in a year with a .324 average?

but anyway, that's an easy decision if we could afford him and extend him.

lol, yea, the chances of Kipnis being better than Votto are about.... 0%.

I wouldn't say 0%, but this is Joey Votto we are talking about. 2010 NL MVP. Consistent force at the plate. Don't get me wrong, I'm really excited about Jason Kipnis, but to get a lot you've got to give a lot sometimes. Look at what we had to give for Ubaldo Jimenez.

I know there's a 1% chance of him even getting traded, but honestly, if he were to agree to an extension and all it took was Kipnis and our top two prospects, you do that trade every single time. That's not to say Kipnis isn't an All-Star in the making -- which I firmly believe he is -- but Joey Votto is an All-Star NOW, right when the Indians have a window for contention. And, not to mention the fact that they have been doing much better in the draft lately, so I don't think it would be as difficult for them to replenish a depleted farm system if they sold the farm for a guy like Votto.

All this talk is making me really hopeful that the Indians are gonna make a big splash in free agency or trades this offseason. And while a guy like Prince Fielder more than likely won't be coming here (I'm not too keen on the idea of him coming here, anyway), after the way they went after Jimenez this year, it's not unfathomable to think that they are going to be aggressive this offseason, even if they don't have a ton of money to work with.

Come on, it's pretty close to 0%. I guess there is "always that chance" but really...

Another thing to consider is with the Jimenez trade and the graduation of guys like Kipnis and Chisenhall to the major leagues, our farm system isn't exactly primed to set up trades for marquee players.

Hey, I'm just trying to be fair. Too small of a sample size. Joey Votto is really, really, REALLY good, but we haven't even seen what Kipnis can do for a whole season yet. I'm at least inclined to give him a whole season in the bigs before saying that he's never going to be an MVP-caliber player like Votto.

That isn't even the point, though. The point is players like that are extremely rare to begin with, so the odds already say the chance is very small.

Not disagreeing, but again, I'd like to at least see what he can do over the course of the season. That being said, he'll probably never be as good as Votto, but a lot of players aren't.

Not really the point though. You can't compare a 2B to a 1B. Comparing the players, well sure Votto is the better hitter, and highly doubtful Kipnis hits 37 HR's and bats .330, but comparing Kipnis to another 2B and his ceiling is the top hitting 2B in the Majors. If it means giving up Kipnis to get Votto, I pass on that. You can always pick up a decent 1B with power that may never be even close to the hitter Votto is. A 2B who can hit for both power and average is very rare. That's why I keep Kipnis no matter what. I do not trade him for Votto at all. Acquiring half the hitter Votto is to play 1B is better than what we have now. Besides, a 1B who can also play outfield is what we really need.

I pass on any deal involving Jason Kipnis.

So you wouldn't give up a guy who MIGHT be an All Star 2B for a guy who is DEFINITELY an MVP candidate at 1B (another position of dire need).

You take the sure thing.

Barring a career ending injury, Kipnis is a sure thing.

Oh really? A sure thing to be an MVP candidate at 2B?

All right, man.

You said All Star at 2B and not a sure thing. I say he is a sure thing as an all star. I'll keep the 2B who can hit with power and average AND an all star at that position. I can find a 1B with power and maybe half the player Votto is, AND keep the rest of my top prospects in the system along with Kipnis.

Bottom line; NO WAY do I give up Kipnis for Votto. It just won't happen.

Well, we don't really have many "top" prospects left. Our farm system is pretty dry.

If you're talking about an overall trade, well sure I would be hesitant to give up a slew of guys for Votto even if he signed an extension. But we're talking about Kipnis vs Votto here. This shouldn't even be a debate. What it boils down to is you'd rather have the guy who played a handful of games and looked pretty good, over the MVP caliber first baseman who has already arrived in this league. Lunacy, and I think most will agree. Your homerism isn't coming into play at all here, is it?

Kipnis' ceiling is not the top hitter at 2nd base.. He will never pass Robinson Cano, and it's doubtful he will reach Dustin Pedrioa's status.

And if it's so easy to pick up a decent 1B with power, why haven't the Indians had one in forever?

What, Matt LaPorta doesn't count?
