Bennett really reminds me of Amare, for both good and bad...

Obviously the physical and frame comparisons aren't valid but the way they play the game is very similar...

Yes, and Amar'e was once thought of as a fringe superstar... before his eyeball fell out, his knees exploded, and his non-winning brand of basketball was exposed for what it is.

This isn't strictly in response to Smooth's post, but my agreement with the Stoudemire comparison may seem at odds with my love for Bennett, especially considering that the "for bad" that's present for both is an occasional lack of interest in defense and a lack of tenacity in going after rebounds. Given Bennett's current lack of Tenacious D, I also have to admit that he's not currently a tremendous fit on a team with such absolutely atrocious perimeter defense. And as exciting as it sounds to picture Bennett and Tristan as a modern day LJ and Zo, niceness isn't really the major thing separating Tristan from Zo. Zo was considered "short" for a center towards the end of a golden age for big, strong, low post, 7' centers, but Zo still had a couple inches of height on Tristan, over a 7'6" wingspan, and was one of the strongest and most explosive bigs in the league in his prime. I wish Tristan was that, but he isn't.

So how the eff could I still be so enamoured with Bennett? Well, first, as I've said before, I'm not all that concerned with fit at this stage of the game; I'm concerned with talent. I think Bennett is the second most talented prospect in this draft, trailing only McLemore in my mind, and only by a sliver. And even though I'm not so worried about fit, I still think he and Tristan could compliment each other well enough to be a starting front court, even if they're not LJ and Zo, and even if it's only until one of them is cashed in as a major asset in a trade for another star.

Tristan appears to be becoming a fairly good post defender in his own right, even without great height. He's got a strong base and he's learning to use it and he's also become so much more disciplined in just holding his ground with his hands up rather than biting on fakes. And this isn't a league filled with Hakeems, Ewings, Admirals, and Shaqs anymore. Guys like Kendrick Perkins and Al Jefferson aren't much taller than Tristan, maybe an inch or so, and didn't start out much heavier and they get along fine at center, let alone the complete non-centers like Joel Anthony and Blair. And, hell, it seems like half the guys starting at center in the league anymore are only actually starting for their teams because, well, somebody has to.

Sort of like Amar'e with Nash, I think Bennett might have the best potential in this draft as a Pick and Roll / Pick and Pop partner with Kyrie and Dion. I also think that a starting front court of Bennett and Tristan wouldn't be worlds different than the Boozer and Noah combo in Chicago, which doesn't sound all that great, but they were legit contenders last year when they had their star PG. He have a star PG. And Bennett and Tristan both still have the P word and upside and all that stuff, unlike the tapped out and lazy ass Boozer. Betting on Bennett becoming a solid defender might be going too far, but he's plenty young yet and has the strength, length, and athleticism for it... though so do so many who never really get it defensively. But our perimeter defense needs to improve too if we're ever going to be good anyways. And none of the top prospects this year are without holes.

That's just pure poetry right there.

I moved this thread to CavsTalk for a few reasons.

• Bennett is the only top prospect (to which the Cavs have been linked by media sources as a possible #1 pick) without a CavsTalk thread. By my count, they have been linked in print so far to Noel, Porter, Len, McLemore, Oladipo, and Bennett, and we still have 2+ weeks.

• Last year, the Dion Waiters thread had fewer than 5 total posts on the morning of the draft.

• We might as well be prepared for surprises, and this one would count...

Any one know if they have brought him in yet? I know an article said they had extensively scouted him during the season, like with dion.

I was looking for this thread last night for this very reason. Actually with how little we have discussed him I just assumed he was our pick.

Bennett is the ideal 2K player. :chuckles:

I will say that if we already had our center, Bennett might be number 1 on my board. I think he has a really big upside and will easily challenge for rookie of the year with his NBA ready body and scoring ability. Fully expect to see plenty of 20 and 10 games from Bennett this year.

Well, I will say this if it is true that Dion Waiters is not set in stone as the starting SG then I guess getting a stud PF is not out of the question as the same should apply to TT as the future PF. I would not do it, but many scouts think he can put up big numbers on the offensive end.

I was looking for thread last night also. I wonder if he could play the 3. If so he could be a great pick.

Bennett is like the situation with Derek Williams. Is he a 3 or a small 4?
I have read a lot about him and most feel he can't play the 3 because he lacks the footspeed and agility to defend .

What will ultimately determine Bennett plays long-term is what position he can best guard. To start, Bennett is an average defender at best. While he largely does possess the physical skills to be a good defender, his motor runs very hot and cold at the defensive end. His defensive fundamentals and understanding of defensive rotations are also very rudimentary to this point. His lateral quickness will most likely expose him on the perimeter more so than his lack of size will on the inside. When in the post, Bennett’s bulk, length and explosive athleticism will allow him to be passable in the post. Out on the perimeter where he will he would be asked to cover athletes in space might be asking him to do too much.

Injuries are a major concern with Bennett, as well. He suffered season ending injuries his junior and senior years of high school; then battled lower back issues and a shoulder injury this year at UNLV. I haven't been able to locate what those high school injuries were.

Basically, this. There are only 15 minutes a game available at PF after Tristan, and that's the only position this dude can play. He would have to be overwhelmingly the most talented player in the draft to be worth consideration for us, and I don't think anyone's saying that.

Bennett is the kid in this draft who people have slept on who is the potentially most talented player to be taken this year. A few of us have been saying that IF you could draft a potential Barkley or LJ wouldn't you want to do that? He passes the eyeball test from the offensive side of the game and like all young players COULD grow to become a passable defender.

I would be beyond pleased IF the Cavaliers drafted this kid. I think his upside is worth the lack of position concerns. Talent ALWAYS finds a way onto the court.....

Bennett is the one guy in this draft that I would get really excited about if we picked him, but I'd never have the balls to do it myself.

I think he has a chance to be an excellent player

If you don't like Mike Brown, drafting Bennett would be a great way to get him to resign :chuckles:
