I was just reminiscing the other day about the time somebody told me Darius Morris could be a similar player to Jason Kidd...

Everybody is a future All-Star when you do player comparisons

Player comps are really only useful for style of play rather than caliber of said player

I put together some of the pace adjusted stats for the top draft picks.

It was pretty kind to Porter. Wings with his length, shooting, and rebounding are almost a "can't miss" when they also have a decent rate of assists, steals and blocks like they do with Porter.
His passing, defense and legit 3 point range makes him a great fit for the Cavs. He might not look that great because of some weak tourny games and a low key demeanor, but he's had Sophomore stats that are not embarrassing even when compared to some greats like Scotty Pippen. I'm pretty sure he'll be a legit starter in the NBA. If Porter can improve between 19 and 20 like he did between 18 and 19, he'll be something special.

Oladipo, Smart and Bennett are wild cards. They might not be the positions that the Cavs want, but they look like they are solidly in the second tier of talent. Len could be in that second tier of talent, depending how you view his attitude and how you handycap his last season. There's a decent chance that the Cavs take a risk on Len even if they are picking at #3.

McLemore seems like a third tier talent. While he wasn't bad, he didn't do much exciting other than score. Players like that don't always succeed in the NBA.

Muhammad looks like he should still be available at #17.

Notes:

  • Bold stats are good. Red Stats are bad.
  • Some of the stats are bold even though they are not the highest because they are good for that position. For example, TRB% = 16 for a center is just OK, but a TRB = 10 for a guard is great.
  • Steals and blocks are important because it shows NBA level athleticism and awareness.
  • Offensive rebounding is a trait that caries over to the NBA very well.
  • Players with a low USG% might be better fits next to Kyrie and Waiters.
  • TOV% has to be considered next to AST%. If the guy doesn't pass, low turnovers should be expected.

My question about Pippen was obviously a joke, but I think if anything Porter is Granger with more upside.

The Granger comparison is a good one in terms of body type and style of play. I just don't think Porter will be anywhere near as good.

I truthfully think he will be just as good and probably better as he fits great with the Cleveland guards, much like Granger would.

i see danny green in porter.. good starter but definitely not a game changer which the cavs needs right now.. there are plenty of wings with that kind of skill set, give me a bigman instead..

with the east getting a lot bigger (vucevic, bynum, monroe, drummond, hibbert, valanciunas, henson, sanders, etc..) the cavs need to keep up.. a team with kyrie needs a bigman he can work with offensively and who can cover his defensive lapses...

And who can we draft to do that brings instant offense as a big man and defense? Best option is Len probably. Then you have to ask who plays SF against the likes of Melo/LeBron/Granger/Deng etc?

Yeah, no. I'm not that big of a Porter fan as I want a big, but he is no where near Danny Green. Porter does things Green can't do and has much higher of an upside than Danny Green.

If we take one of Noel, Porter, or Len with our highest 1st, what about moving up with our 2nd pick (even if it means trading Varejao to do it) to acquire another one of those 3? Noel + Len, Noel + Porter, or Len + Porter would be a helluva draft.

I know it's a nice thought, but let's not get too greedy. It's pretty hard to get 2 lottery picks after draft positions are solidified.

It's pretty hard to trade up to a top 15 pick just using picks after 15. The drop in talent is usually too high or the level of risk is too great. The usual way to get a pick above 15 is to include a pick in the 16-20 range along with a proven player, most likely taking back a bad contract. Often the team trading down already has a lot of youth. So if Speights doesn't opt out, a team like Portland might be a candidate. Something like the 12th pick for Speights + 17 +32.

But back on topic, I like Porter a lot. He's got a lot of untapped potential, plays a position of need, plays both ends of the floor, he rebounds, he shoots, he's is a good passer for his position, and is low risk of being a washout. I think he's the Cavs choice. I don't see any competition unless they win the #1 pick.

Let's hope so. Cavs need another scoring option, and a guy who is consistent. Even if the cost is a big (Len does not strike me as #4 pick material). They couldn't get MKG and they passed on guys like Lamb and Klay Thompson in the past. Also, I'd like to see someone else in the slot that is oft filled by Alonzo Gee.

I'm all the way for Porter with the first pick, unless they get #1, then it's Noel.

i disagree i think by NBA standards (especially compared to other SFs) Parsons is an average athlete

Have you actually WATCHED Chandler Parsons and not assumed his athletic ability based on his skin color?
