To add, I've never felt while watching that effort was ever the problem defensively with Sexton. It's all technique/scheme based. College defense is... easy, to say the least. It's schematically a nightmare for a PG in the NBA.

Yeah, I tend to trust in guys who are hard workers, which Sexton clearly is, to figure shit out eventually. We've already seen the strides he's made with his outside shot over the course of the season.

Defense is usually about effort long-term, and I think the effort will always be there with Sexton. He just needs everything to click, which will hopefully happen next year after he has another full NBA offseason.

And honestly, defensive stats, are they actually meaningful on the individual level.

Of all players > 30 games played and > 20 mpg, the Cavs have 5 of the bottom 14 players in the league (6 if you include Hood), including the three worst in TT, Sexton, Osman.

Until someone can prove that these things mean a damn on an individual level I'm going to ignore them...

Put me in the he’ll be an adequate defender column. He gets a little bouncy and overcommits a lot, but those are trying too hard traits rather than matador defense traits. He’ll figure it out. As far as passing , we need guys living in the corners with him so that he can drive and kick. I don’t think he’ll ever be a natural assist guy, but he may become someone who can get it done in a cerebral sense to where it’s not a detriment once he has a few shooters to kick to.

The best thing is it sounds like you have to kick him out of the gym, so anything that can be a product of effort will be accomplished.

We need to have a serious conversation about his haircut.

JK lol

I do think he'll get defense figured out. He's got the athleticism to at least be an average defender, but most rookie point guards tend to be pretty horrendous defensively.

Most pg's tend to be horrendous defenders period.

If he can figure out how to defend 6'6 guys atleast average, he is going to flourish as a sg/combo guard. He isn't given enough credit for being a natural scorer and he has become efficient as he has worked with coaches and worked on his shot.

Either Morant or Barrett would be perfect as both can play point (Morant is only a point) and share the pg duties with Sexton like Knight, but both are much, much better players than Knight imo.

I am very Bullish on Sexton (please say I am not the first to make that horrid pun, lol)

Beard looks good, especially on him. He needs it. Hardens beard is the real mvp

Brow needs to go too

Speaking of beards and brands:

His 3pt shooting warms the cockles, was my biggest worry. Couldnt give a shit about his playmaking, hes a shooting guard

Sexton continues to prove his worth and show his growth. Honestly, we couldn't have asked for more from a number 8 pick who we were all pretty ambivalent about from the get-go. I have so much confidence in his jump shot now.

Did anyone notice the way Rozier was defending him on the perimeter? He was right up in his grill, showing a ton of respect for that deep ball - so much so that Sexton was able to blow by him 2-3 times with his quickness and get to the basket.

Now that his 3-PT shot is looking the way it is, he's in a position where he can begin to work on developing other parts of his offensive game (attacking the rim, dribbling etc). Being so efficient with that shot is going to open up so many possibilities for him moving forward that will only accelerate his development.

Couldn't be happier with what we've seen from Sexton since the All Star break - what that now means is that we have verified that he's a solid, starting piece on a future winning roster. Tick that box and let's move on to the next building block.

Is Drew tanking by sitting him? He was the only guy who had it going and he started him beginning of the 4th and too him out to go with Stauskas at the end????

His timing on passes out of the paint should be a little sooner. Getting stuck under the basket a bit .

Good game against some good defenders. Had him a little indecisive in the first half and then he figured it out.

I think Drew decided to keep him in for the 4th quarter then it was an oh shit moment in the last 3 minutes when he realized he didn't give Sexton a break in the second half.

I think like Lue, he doesn't have a good sense of minutes and adjusting rotations in game so he has to keep to a strict rotation. When he rides a guy, I've noticed he will screw up and leave them in too long.

Didn't he do this last game too? Maybe he came back too late or something?

Shouldn’t one of 7 assistants monitor mins and let drew know?

He should be. They are two games up on the Bulls and need to maintain that buffer.

Sexton is developing nicely while maintaining the third position. It’s the best of both worlds right now.

With a little luck, they will add another long term high quality piece in the upcoming draft. If they hit the jackpot, they get Zion.
