Connecticut School Shooting

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Just sickening.

I go to Stow High and I'm sure people on here have heard about the kid making the hit list.

I just hope nothing happens when he comes back Monday.

Wow. This is one of the worst shootings we've had. Is it just me or is this crap almost becoming more common? We've had this, Batman/The Joker, and then the Chardon one early in the year which obviously hit a lot of us close to home. I can't really think of much worse than shooting up a school, a place where children go to learn and better their education. Awful.

At the same time, people using this as some sort of sign of the progression of our society...I'm not sure I buy it. Go all the way back through the history of mankind and you've had stuff just as bad going on. It's just humans. There are always going to be some nuts in the mix. You can take preventative measures against such shootings, but you'll never eliminate mass murderers like these sickos. They've been around since the dawn of man.

IMO, one of the problems is the media. Every time something of this nature happens, we see television specials dedicated to the shooters. Somebody out there watching says to themselves, "I can be on tv" and they act the same way. It's sad to say but I feel like we are on a rapid decline as a species.

Home Schooling is now on the docket to discuss with the wife this weekend.

she is only 8 months old...But this is terrifying the crap out of me.

The guy used a .223 caliber rifle....a gun that serves no purpose in the arms of a citizen. Yes, gun control should be talked about. After an incident like this, why shouldn't all possible causes/solutions be explored? More thorough background checks, etc. before selling someone a gun seems logical.

Imagine if teachers were armed, lives could have been saved and it would of been a shootout of course, or maybe the coward would thought twice about doing this. But how would people feel about sending their kids to school knowing teachers are armed? Security seems irrelevant anymore. Just thinking out loud.

I would change school districts if my son's teachers were armed. There are a lot of unbalanced teachers out there ya know.

Why is it a bad idea to have at least one armed security guard at all schools?
because it won't have nearly the impact you'd expect? these tragedies are going to happen no matter what unless you go all the way - at least one security guard, metal detectors, patting down everyone that enters, etc.

take today, for example. the shooter was a father of a student. would a security guard stop him from entering? doubtful. would a security guard have saved any lives once the shooting started? again, doubtful. adding another gun into the mix when there are already a ton of kids running around would not end well.

security guards at schools are nothing new.
yes, in the hood. to stop kids from hurting each other.

not to stop others from entering schools.

You have to be pretty naive to think that somebody trained with a gun would not have prematurely killed the bastard saving at least one life.
Im from rural SE Ohio and we even had a part-time security guard.

How about the 3 other guns? The Kevlar vest?

I'm just curious, why is everyone so against it being harder to get a gun? If you need a gun quickly, then you should probably rethink your life.

Having an armed responder already in the building when the shooting starts wouldn't have saved lives? Instead of waiting for SWAT teams to arrive?

Home defense?

Didn't the recent mall shooter steal a rifle from a friend??? How exactly would the background checks have worked there?

self defense?
them being illegal/"harder to get" wont make a difference (see drugs)?

As a parent of elementary age kids, this is beyond belief. Who could go into a school and shoot innocent children? How can the school plan to stop this? How can they foresee such actions? They can't and that's terrifying.

How can you guys sit there and say that guns have NOTHING to do with this situation? They might not account for the entire story, but I assure you, the lack of gun contol, ineffective gun laws, and the fact that any mentally ill individual is able to purchase a firearm - is very much part of the problem.

We must re-evaluate our ideals. I am not going to offer any specific suggestions and I do not want to incite a political debate here because the focus and attention truly needs to lie with the victims and their families right now.
