Consensus Mock Drafts

NBA - 2012 NBA Draft Rater - ESPN

This year, we have two names to add to that list: Dion Waiters and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Kidd-Gilchrist is probably the safest pick on the board -- a big wing who plays defense, has strong stats and comes with no character questions. From a risk-aversion perspective alone he should be a top-five pick; I have him third on my board after Robinson. (See below for how I would rank the prospects, regardless of their Draft Rater numbers.)
I have Waiters fourth for similar reasons. His size, 6-foot-4, is more of a concern, but whatever team made him a promise did a wise thing. Waiters projects as the best small wing since Dwyane Wade, and he'd be a steal if somebody got him in the Nos. 8-10 range currently being discussed.

The other wing everybody is sleeping on is Quincy Miller of Baylor, who put up a strong mark despite coming off an ACL injury. He has more questions marks because of the knee and his bony build, but he is long and can score. The stories of him slipping have me baffled, because he rates as a top-10 pick.

Two other wings who will be drafted highly don't rate as strongly: Beal and Harrison Barnes. Most players in their range turn out to be solid, but this part of the pool doesn't produce many stars. I'd be more comfortable taking these two in the later part of the lottery.

Doron and Jeremy Lamb added to the perpetual confusion between the two by posting virtually the same rating, although this may be the only one that had Doron rated higher. Jeremy is likely to go 15 picks sooner given his higher ceiling, but Doron could be a great pickup in the late first or early second round as a Courtney Lee clone who hits 3s and defends.

I don't think it's Waiters. Sure, he might sound like the closest to a Dwyane Wade in this draft but Hollinger only has stats... He didn't put these factors in as well:

  1. Did he consider that they weren't even playing at similar time periods on the floor? That's like comparing James Harden to Dwyane Wade. Dion was a sixth man dominating the benches in 24 minutes a game. Beal was playing more minutes against starters, especially larger ones since he was the 3rd tallest guy on the floor.
  2. What about Tournament games compared to the Regular Season? 6 higher level games shows a big difference. A scout said in March that Dion basically didn't perform well against the bigger competition, I wonder why? Beal on the other hand didn't disappoint.
  3. One and dones don't get much of a chance to show more. So Beal was finally starting to shoot better at the end but barely was 3 points lower on the PER rater... What does that say?

I don't think it's time yet to call off Dion, but he doesn't look like a Cavs candidate. But hey, maybe that's just me...

Here is Brian Colangelo's top 6 for the draft--

Raptors weigh

While Colangelo would not name names as far as who he might pick, it’s not difficult to figure it out. He expects Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist of Kentucky, Brad Beal of Florida, Thomas Robinson of Kansas, Weber State’s Damian Lillard and, likely, Harrison Barnes of North Carolina to be gone — leaving Duke’s Austin Rivers, Dion Waiters of Syracuse and Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger as possibilities at No. 8.

The Bobcats still have executives all over the league wondering what they'll do at No. 2 and how their decision will affect the teams around them. Meanwhile, the annual cat-and-mouse game between agents and teams trying to line up workouts is as complicated as ever. Here's our latest look at the landscape, which has Bradley Beal moving into that second spot, Jared Sullinger tumbling out of the lottery and Miles Plumlee cracking the first round

** Wizards, NO trade just occurred, looks like all this stuff is going to change soon as MKG gets less interesting to the wizards**

New Orleans trades Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza to Washington for Rashard Lewis and the #46 pick.

I really can't imagine the Cavs passing on MKG for Barnes ** fixed **

Otherwise, unless Drummond rocks the house at his workout this Friday and grabs spot #2, or some team trades for the Bobcats pick, it's looking like the Cavs get to chose between MKG and Barnes.

CBS Sportline has Drummond falling to 10. While I'm not a fan of Drummond at 4, and not completely sold on him at 7 either depending on who is still on the board, he's a great bargain at #10.

Wow, a lot of different names getting thrown around with that #4 pick post-trade.

I sure as hell hope it comes down to us choosing between MKG and Barnes at 4. MKG all day.

Looks like the big name mock drafts are in a dead heat for who goes to #4. All I can say is that I'm really glad we didn't fall to #5 or #6. We'd be discussing Drummond, Waiters, & Lamb instead of Beal, Barnes, and MKG.

The Will Barton call at #24 by Chad Ford is interesting. Might be something to that pick if he can play SG. He's is more interesting than the head cases, the leftover combo forwards or the 7footers with stony hands.

Sam The Bullshit Whisperer said:
The Cavs are still a moving target when it comes to assessing their pick, and the contingent that believes Beal would be taken over Barnes has grown. I'm sticking to what I was told early in the process: They're in love with Barnes. But as I said at the start, things can always change and the buzz around Beal has been extremely loud lately. Barnes worked out against Beal on Saturday, and sources confirmed reports that Beal was the perceived winner. But even if Beal were still available in this scenario, this isn't about a glorified one-on-one scrimmage between players who play different positions. And here's where it gets interesting: After Beal's agent, Mark Bartelstein, refused to have his client work out for teams below the top four and sent a clear message of confidence that his guy wouldn't fall past the Cavs, Barnes' agent, Jeffrey Wechsler, followed suit this week. Sources said he canceled a workout with Sacramento (No. 5) for later this week, although I'm told Barnes' camp will reassess that situation after he works out in Charlotte.

Chad Ford said:
#4 the Cavs have a choice between Kidd-Gilchrist and Harrison Barnes. The team is high on both players and could go either direction. Kidd-Gilchrist brings toughness, defense and leadership and would be great running the floor with Kyrie Irving. Barnes is a much better shooter and scorer who could add more punch to the Cavs' attack. At this point I'd give Kidd-Gilchrist the slight edge over Barnes.

#24 One of the risers on draft boards the past few weeks, Barton is long and athletic and has a great midrange game. At this point, the Cavs can take a little risk.

Jeff Goodman said:
#4 The Cavs have enough high-motor guys with Anderson Verejao and Tristan Thompson; Chris Grant needs a skilled player and Barnes is the ideal fit here. He and Kyrie Irving are also tight -- which won't hurt the case.

#24 He's big, strong, plays with a high-motor and also has a high basketball IQ. Cleveland could use someone like White -- who makes people around him better from the forward spot.

Lawlz, Jeff Goodman. You crack me up.

As for Royce White, doesn't look like he makes it to #24 ...

Chad Ford said:
So it's no surprise that on Friday morning, I was already getting strong denials that White had such a commitment from the Celtics. The sources pointing White to the Celtics are strong ones, and we've moved him to No. 21 in our Mock Draft, version 8.2.

The fact that they all have MKG slipping to #4 has me excited. I would be really livid if we pass on Kidd-Gilchrist in favor of Barnes, though. Anyone know how much truth there was to Barnes "camp" sending out signals he'd like to play for a big market?

I'm trying to wrap my mind around a team passing up a potential all-star SF because they traded for....Trevor Ariza. Does Trevor Ariza really take Gilchrist out of the picture when it comes to Washington's pick? Not buying it.
