Odd. When was the last time a coach had an endorsement deal?

David "The Dove Man" Blatt

David Pick had an interview with Blatt with questions from twitter users:

One on One With Cavaliers Coach David Blatt

Two months removed from completing a triple-crown winning season — Israeli League Championship, Israeli State Cup and Euroleague title – U.S. born head coach David Blatt has hit a grand slam.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Blatt’s first-ever NBA team, have locked up Kyrie Irving, re-signed LeBron James, added ring-holder Shawn Marion and are close to completing a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves for stretch big man Kevin Love.

Behind a successful sideline debut at the Las Vegas Summer League, Blatt returned to Israel, his home-away-from-home, to shoot an endorsement campaign for Dove skincare products.

In between takes, Blatt took time for a unique Q&A to respond to a wide selection of Cavs fans’ Twitter questions.

Mike Cline (@BrownsBucksFan): Do you feel like you just won the lottery?

Blatt: “Won the lottery? Without question the Cleveland team that I signed on to, compared to the Cleveland team of today, is different. [General Manager] David Griffin has done a fabulous job building the team and the ownership of Cleveland has proven their complete commitment to the state of Ohio and to the Cavaliers in terms of building a quality organization with a chance to achieve the maximum. I’m very lucky to be a part of that.”

Patrick Gallagher (@Gallagator12): Hardest transition between Euro-and-NBA basketball?

Blatt: “Probably the schedule. Playing multiple games the same week with very few practices, and having a different recovery process, is unknown territory. The good thing is, in comparison to Israel, trips are shorter and much smoother in the U.S. The weather is another adjustment because Cleveland definitely doesn’t have the heat and humidity that Israel has. At the end of the day, though, it’s all about coaching basketball.”

Baltimore Bones (@latripleB): Will Kyrie Irving play as PG or SG?

Blatt: “Kyrie is a point guard who is multifaceted, extremely skilled and still very much on the upswing as a great basketball player.”

Neil Losordo (@cavs_fan2): What’s the plan for Dion [Waiters], have him as starter or an instant offense guy off the bench?

Blatt: “Dion is a lot of things to this team. I’ve never seen any particular importance to the emphasis of starting or not, I see an emphasis on playing and helping the team win. That’s not to say he will or won’t start, that’s not the point. I think his and every player’s motto and desire needs to be to help the team win. That’s what’s important.”

Jason Wells (@alphazepp): How do you plan to manage LeBron’s minutes?

Blatt: “I believe anyone in my profession would gladly trade places with me to have the opportunity to coach LeBron. Having LeBron on our side is a huge advantage over other teams, but you have to know how to help him and utilize his talents the best way possible so that we maximize the potential of our team. Throughout my career, I have coached many great players; I know when to be tough and when to be somewhat softer.”

Rashad (@RJJ954): Tell them to keep Andrew Wiggins.

Blatt: “I had the opportunity to work with Andrew Wiggins this summer and he’s a kid I love and respect. As far as what’s coming down the line, I really can’t talk about it right now.”

Stefan (@AAndjelic): Do you plan on playing small lineups with LeBron at the four?

Blatt: “Throughout my career, I have used many ‘small ball’ lineups, and of course that tactic is becoming more and more popular throughout the world — in the United States as well. If that’s what it takes to win, that’s what we’ll do.”

Logan Pysher (@turntupGEE): How do you plan on fixing rim protection problems? / MD(@mddela): Lots of good forwards, but no one true center. Who will Cleveland play at the five?

Blatt: “Right now, we’re hoping Brendan Haywood is going to make progress coming back from his foot injury, and if he does that’ll be a big plus for our team. As far as other roster decisions, our team is in the best of hands with David Griffin.”

Neely (@kNeely): I’m curious what, if any interaction you had with Romeo Travis (one of LeBron’s “Fab Five” in high school, All-Star Israeli League).

Blatt: “I know Romeo. I have not talked to him since I’ve been in Cleveland, but I do hope to get a chance to speak to him because I know him well, I’ve coached against him, and he’s a good guy.”

Jeremy Sexton (@JeremySexton88): How much sleep have you lost thinking about versatility of lineups you can run?

Blatt: “I don’t sleep a lot to begin with so I don’t know how much sleep there is left for me to lose. We do have a lot of possibilities and obviously a lot of talented guys we can put on the floor and it’s my job to figure that piece out.”

Has Blatt envisioned a post-season visit to the White House?

Blatt: “I don’t like the idea of putting the cart before the horse. We got a long way to go before we can even consider those things.”

Will Kevin Love be a Cavalier?

Blatt: “I can’t say anything about the Kevin Love situation as you well know.”

John Calipari says Blatt is a better coach for the Cavs than himself

There were rumors throughout the offseason of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari being courted by various NBA teams, most especially the Cleveland Cavaliers in their pursuit of LeBron James. The Cavs reportedly offered Calipari a 7-year, $60 million deal. Calipari told reporters a few days ago that he wouldn't have taken the gig even if he'd known LeBron James was on board.

But in a recent interview, Calipari said that Blatt was simply a better coach for the job.

"David Blatt can really coach," Calipari told Frank Isola and Malik Rose during an interview on SiriusXM NBA Radio. "He's a better choice than me to coach that team. I coached against him. I'm not sitting here just saying it. I coached against him in FIBA basketball. I watched him coach Russia, the guy can coach, OK? Those players, all they want is respect. If they respect you as a coach they're going to play like crazy."

"It's not going to happen in a month, just like Miami," Calipari told the hosts. "It'll be similar to that but they got an outstanding coach, they got the best coach they could get for where they are and what they're trying to do."

We don't know what kind of coach Blatt is in the NBA, to be honest. He's got a tremendous international reputation. But the differences in international play vs. the NBA are subtle, but important. There's also a lot that comes off the court in terms of handling a different level of ego and a different set of motivations.

But still, Blatt's level of expertise and knowledge seem, at least at this point, promising.

And given Calipari's struggle in his time with the Nets, maybe he's right. But given the power Calipari has amassed as a maker of No. 1 picks and his familiarity with the power brokers of the NBA, you'd think he'd do a pretty good job as well. But if Calipari was going to leave Kentucky for the league, you'd think either this position or the Lakers' one which he was rumored to be in the running for, would have been the best opportunities. Will he ever get a better gig than the one Blatt took?

Kentucky's John Calipari says David Blatt is a better choice to coach the Cleveland Cavaliers

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Before LeBron James announced his return to Cleveland and prior to David Blatt being named the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, owner Dan Gilbert had eyes for Kentucky head coach John Calipari.

Reports from Yahoo Sports in early June had Calipari being offered a $60 million-plus deal by the Cavs, which he turned down, electing to stay in the college ranks.

So the Cavs continued their search for Mike Brown's replacement, and it led them to Blatt, a coach without any experience in the NBA, but one well respected for his accomplishments overseas. Calipari believes Cleveland made the right choice.

Calipari, who had one stint as a head coach in the NBA before returning to the collegiate ranks, believes the Cavs will return to prominence.

"Dan Gilbert is a great guy who wants it for the right reasons, that's why Cleveland will win," Calipari said. "Now you just have to have really good players. Guess what? Cleveland has really good players."

They could be adding one more in the near future when a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves becomes official, making All-Star forward Kevin Love the newest member of Cleveland's talented roster.

"It's going to be scary seeing how good Kyrie (Irving) is when now you gotta defer a little bit with this; how good Love is," Calipari said. "We haven't even seen how good those two are going to be. And it's kinda like when Michael would grab guys and all of a sudden you saw Scottie (Pippen) how good he could be or (Dennis) Rodman. ... All of them, all of them. That's what LeBron will do. It's crazy what's going to go on in Cleveland."

It's been an off-season of change for the Cavs, and there is plenty to be excited about. But gaining chemistry and experience will be early obstacles.

"It's not going to happen in a month, just like Miami," Calipari told the hosts. "It'll be similar to that but they got an outstanding coach, they got the best coach they could get for where they are and what they're trying to do."

Interesting.

Calipari probably realizes he's more master recruiter than master coach. That's not to say I wouldn't have taken him as our coach, because having a guy with his reputation obviously wouldn't hurt when it came to bringing in free agents. We probably got the better coach, though, and now that LeBron is back apparently we got the best recruiter in the league too.

I really loved David Blatt in Maccabi Tel-Aviv, I think he really understands the game very well and enjoy coaching, I am sure that either coach Blatt and the Cavs squad will learn new things from this experience, and it is also very exciting to have an Israeli coach to be coaching the best team in the NBA on paper.

Hi guys,
im new here, maccabi fan.

I can tell you that you guys really lucky to get this amazing guy.

good luck guys!

^ Welcome to the forum. This sounds great! I'm really looking forward to see him coach in the NBA.
But never watched a Maccabi game tbh. :chuckle:
