more from the JCC dinner:

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach David Blatt entertained a capacity crowd of 345 people with stories about his life in basketball at the 13th annual Shaw JCC Sports Dinner Feb. 9 at the Shaw Jewish Community Center in Akron.

Displaying an engaging sense of humor and a down-to-earth demeanor, Blatt spoke for about 30 minutes and then answered questions for another half-hour from the largest audience in the history of the event.

"It's an honor for me to be here and to meet so many of you," Blatt said. "I am truly humbled and grateful for the reception that I've received here, in Cleveland and Akron. Anywhere I've gone in this area, I have found probably the most wonderful and loyal and genuine people that I've ever come across in my life."

Blatt, who lives in downtown Cleveland, has guided the Cavs to a 32-21 record in his first season as an NBA coach and 13 wins in their last 14 games. He talked about growing up in the Boston area and how his coach at Framingham South High School, Phil Moresi, became the greatest influence in his career as a basketball player and coach.

Blatt recalled when he first met Moresi, he offered him some valuable advice. Moresi told him if he wanted to try out for the high school basketball team, he should get a haircut.

"I had long hair, down to my shoulders," he said. "The message was not that he didn't like my hairstyle. It was if you want to be part of something, if it's important enough to you, you have to be willing to accept the rules and the values of that program.

"That was significant for me because I had ability and I had talent, but I didn't have direction and I didn't have discipline. He became a father figure to me, and he was the guy who helped me to understand what was most important in terms of my approach to sports and to life."

In introducing Blatt to the crowd, Terry Pluto, sports columnist for The Plain Dealer, noted that no one has ever made the jump from coaching in the Euroleague directly to the NBA as Blatt has. He praised Blatt for his "grit and perseverance."

"The way he overcame the difficulties (the Cavs) had early in the season shows the fiber and the character of this man," Pluto said.

Blatt, who lived in Israel for many years, guided Maccabi Tel Aviv to the Euroleague and Israeli Premier League championships last season. He was named the Cavs' head coach in June.

Among the items auctioned off during the program were a basketball shoe signed by LeBron James, Cavs jerseys signed by Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, a basketball signed by Tristan Thompson, a photo of Blatt with his signature and a football signed by Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer.

Slam Dunk Table sponsors were Mark and Andie Light and Brunswick Cos. Three Points Table sponsors included the Cleveland Jewish News, Bober Markey Fedorovich, Brouse McDowell, LPA, and Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP.

So, I gathered from that Mike and Mike interview two key points:

1. Coach Blatt believes Kevin is making a concerted effort to do what the team needs.

One of those 'concerted efforts' is understanding that his shots will be dictated by how LeBron and Kyrie run the offense. Coach Blatt didn't think Kevin's game against LA was special--his shots were just falling.

2. Thinks we aren't yet firing on all cylinders. God damn.

Hilarious how they started the whole thing off by saying 'Coach, you have only 32 wins in your coaching career...". You could tell steam was coming out of Blatt's ears when they said that.

He should have just replied, "And only 21 losses. Last I checked, that's well over .500."

If the CAVS were win and he would be the first Cleveland coach to get a ring in over 50 years he would be pretty insufferable at press conferences and in interviews.

Man, you calling someone else insufferable is just ridiculous. Honestly, I don't see how people like you and Futuredome can even be called Cavalier fans.

I mean just listen to yourself, that's what you think about when thinking of the Cavs winning a championship?

I think you and FD don't deserve to celebrate if and when we do make it happen.

Some people can't go through life without complaining even when things are good.

Some people just want to find faults so they can point them out and make themselves feel better.

Some people would rather see the world in a negative light even if things are looking bright.

At least here, there's the ignore button.....

who cares! He could have all the charm of the Hoody as long as he wins like Belichick. I could give a rat's ass how he deals with Fedor,Hayes, etc. I havent heard him take credit for the success he's had this year, he mostly praises his players for that. Don't see how that would change once/if the win a ring.
