So long, David Griffin

Re: David Griffin?

Griffin's legacy will hang on one move and one move only. The Kevin Love trade. If we trade Wiggins and Wiggins becomes the future of the NBA - he will be forever be remembered as the short-sighted GM that couldn't see what was right in front of him.

You've got guys on Sports Illustrated today saying "Cleveland must not trade Andrew Wiggins!"

Whatever Griffin does in this upcoming trade (and one is likely coming) that is what will determine if he's a good GM or not. So far, with the Deng and Hawes trades we just don't know enough.

First, you have to give them credit for drafting him. (P.S, they won't trade him).

Re: David Griffin?

Automatic bid for GM of the year...

Did he even do anything yet? The only thing he did of note was draft Andrew Wiggins over Parker or Embiid, and it's yet to see whether that was the correct choice.
You can't give him credit for the LeBron return. Bron and Rich Paul had closer ties to Chris Grant.

If we assume they weren't going to trade the pick, then there was no wrong choice between Parker or Wiggins. But if LeBron is your target, you go for Wiggins.

Re: David Griffin?

I have to credit him for trading Alonzo Gee for anything, bravo.

Gee had a team option for this year for 3.25 mil$....looking at that means they literally could have waived Gee and then Hopson (2.5mil) and traded one young player or waived Carrick ( 800k) to have a max slot available...those 3 waived in total is roughly 6.40 mil$

So the more I look at it the more I can see why some people were a tad salty they had to give up assets to get rid of Jack...I'm pretty sure they did it so they could get Haywood's contract to use next off-season if they couldn't get Love this year...

I agree. But the facts... He's the GM that signed LeBron, drafted Wiggins. A big part of it has to be team improvement too. Non-playoff team to 1 seed? GM of the year whether he deserves the credit or not...

Time may tell differently. And I think it is already showing in the summer league. Parker is not dominating by dribbling full speed ahead and out-muscling and out-jumping smaller, weaker, and slower opponents. No, his tubbiness is finding it much harder vs these better athletes, as many predicted.

Felix's contract is guaranteed. So they couldn't just cut him. Grant's decision to guarantee the second year of his contract was discussed on RCF last year.

By executing a salary dump of just Jack's contract, the Cavs could have created roughly the same amount of capspace as they ended up creating -- well, about $1.4M instead of somewhere between $1.7M and $1.9M.

We all knew the Cavs would have to sacrifice a young player or a pick in order to dump Jack. We didn't think it would be two young players (Zeller AND Karasev) and a 2016 (protected) pick. Still hard to believe the Cavs had to give up all 3 assets. Makes you wonder whether this was Gilbert's doing? If so, I can cut Griffin some slack here. It may not seem like much, since the salary dump trade in effect landed LeBron, but we need as many assets as possible to build this team. Unlike Miami in 2010, we have only two stars, not three, as things now stand. We don't want to duplicate the Ferry era, when we never had quite enough, despite Gilbert's willingness to spend, to bring in a legitimate second star.

Very interesting that Griffin valued Haywood's contract over Zeller and/or Karasev. I mean, maybe he knew he would have to trade both to dump Jack -- though that price seems excessive -- but once he made the Haywood trade, in order to create the ~$1.9M in space, which presumably will be used to add a veteran, he needed to dump both. I'd prefer to have kept Zeller and not worried about carving out a bit of capspace, but maybe Griffin doesn't agree?? Or maybe it wasn't an option because he couldn't get a Jack deal done otherwise??

Griffin must be confident he can leverage the Haywood contract next summer. It should have some value. It's much more flexible than a TPE too.

As Sheridan's reporting and LeBron's letter makes clear, LeBron's return had nothing to do with David Griffin or anyone else.

Long way to go before the start of the season, but a bit premature to predict a #1 seed. I sort of doubt Griffin will get the credit for LeBron's return. Now if he pulls off a Love trade that pundits view favorably, and team is #1 seed in the East and wins upwards of 60 games, well, then I think he will get recognition.

Jack was utterly horrible last season both in the locker room and on the court.

When a guy is 30 years old, posts an 11PER, a DRTG of 110 and is owed 12.6 million over the next two years, it's going to take a lot to move him.

Unfortunate it cost us Zeller but Jack just had to be moved.

Re: David Griffin?

The situation was unfortunate, but Jack just wasn't a fit.

But losing sleep over the loss of Sergey and Zeller along with the first rounder in 2016 doesn't seem to be that big of a deal, no matter how they were or become.

Let's make a long story short: Sergey was originally the Lakers choice via swap. The swap happened because we had an extra pick (Miami). The swap was made possible due to the deal to send mainly Sessions to the Lakers (we got the 24th pick). We get the 17th pick because we traded the 24th and 2 early 2nd rounders for it. Zeller was originally the 17th.

There's no consequence to having sacrificed since they were extras to begin with thanks to Grant's shrewd maneuvering. Gotta wait and see with him. Griffin's been silently burning some assets but it could pay off as long as he stays careful.

Re: David Griffin?

Up until this point I can honestly say I've agreed with everything he's done as the GM of the Cavaliers.

Agreed. He's gotten hella lucky in the process - what with ping pong balls and best players in the world arriving aside - but his momentum is rolling and seems to be contributing nothing but good on both a cultural and sporting level to this team.

Burning non core assets will be done 100 % of the time by 100 % of gms in league to get Lebron. Notice how since we got him there has been no more carping about the trade in the national media.
