So long, David Griffin

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: David Griffin Appreciation Thread

The man is becoming legendary.

-Named David Blatt coach and signed him to a three-year contract.
-Named Ty Lue the highest payed Ast. Coach
Essentially getting both HC candidates
-Drafted Andrew Wiggins
-Agreed to terms with G Kyrie Irving on a five-year contract extension.
-Agreed to terms with F LeBron James.
-Agreed to terms with F Mike Miller

Has a GM ever had a better two months?

Honestly, I don't think you can credit him with most of these events.

- Drafting Wiggins was a no brainer.
- Kyrie was going to sign that big money deal. 90% of players do.
- Gilbert met with LeBron. Not Griffin.
- Mike Miller is here because of LeBron.

I will, however, give him majority credit for the coaching staff hires. He interviewed tons of candidates, made the right pick, AND got his #2 option as well. Don't get me wrong, I get a great vibe from Griffin. I just think giving him the credit for all these moves is a little silly.

Whoever said any GM who took the job would look like a genius in the future was right on the money

This.
Pretty easy to do your job when you're handed the first overall pick and LeBron decides to come back on his own.

amazing offseason. If you asked me before this I'd a told you the Lakers pulled this crazy shit.....never has this much luck come to Cleveland

Maybe so, but I give the man credit for putting us in position to make it happen. I trust him to make the right decisions... Can't say I've felt that way about Cleveland GM's lately.

Your argument kind of collapsed on itself.

How do we know that the coaching staff he hired wasn't the reason why Irving signed the extension? I actually heard that the coaching staff made a HUGE impact

Also, how do we know Lebron would've came back to play for Mike Brown? I'm sure he would've, but we don't know....

Wiggins wasn't a no brainer. A lot of analysts had us taking Parker or trading the pick.

Not really fair to say we shouldn't give Griffin credit for some of this stuff..

Grant was the one who put us in the position to make this happen. Even Grant's biggest haters give him credit for that. He was preparing for this for 3+ years, and Griffin just followed it through from February onwards. Those plans were already in place.
For me, giving away Zeller in the cap space clearing really hurt when it comes to center depth. I'm hoping before the offseason is over we bring in another C that is at least equal or better to Zeller. If not, that can come back to bite us.

The one thing I WILL give Griffin credit for is hiring David Blatt. That was something that was all him, and a fantastic hire.

Nothing new but what this guy does in relation to Kevin Love will define his legacy forever. Whether or not this trade is being pushed by LeBron or Gilbert is irrelevant. Griffin will take the flack or the credit for whatever goes down.

Let's see what happens.

Agree so far he is just following Grant's plan except for Blatt.

He has the 3rd say in personnel decisions. He's only there to do the legwork at this point. Lebron is calling the shots and Dan is going to do pretty much whatever Lebron wants.

I think his argument makes a lot of sense actually. Guys stacking praise on Griffin at this point makes little to no sense.

How do we know that the coaching staff he hired wasn't the reason why Irving signed the extension?

To paraphrase the OP, "because 90% of young players sign max extensions when offered." I don't think any reasonable person expected Kyrie Irving to not accept his extension. I don't care what you heard. There's very very little reason to believe otherwise.

I actually heard that the coaching staff made a HUGE impact

:chuckles: If Mike Brown were here still, Irving probably would've made a stink about it, I agree, but it wouldn't have prevented him from seeking a Rose-rule style max contract. That's just silly. The contract itself was a given, and Chris Grant's firing by Dan Gilbert pretty much sealed Mike Brown's fate; and that's not me talking, that was reported by quite a few journalists.

Also, how do we know Lebron would've came back to play for Mike Brown? I'm sure he would've, but we don't know....

Griffin did not fire Mike Brown nor could he make such a decision. That was the call of the owner.

Wiggins wasn't a no brainer.

Wiggins OR Parker was a no-brainer. You could virtually flip a coin.

I don't think one will be THAT much better than the other. Parker will likely be a better rebounder and scorer, Wiggins a better defender. I preferred Wiggins, as did most GMs from what was reported due to Parker's conditioning issues and lack of defensive prowess.

But again, it was not a tough nail-biting decision as I don't think either has major bust potential. Had Griffin/Gilbert decided on Parker, we'd still be siting here in exactly the same position, save one important point....

A lot of analysts had us taking Parker or trading the pick.

If we trade Wiggins for Love, then we made the wrong choice at the draft. At least I think so, but that's just my take. I think having Jabari Parker negates the need for Kevin Love as Love plays no defense and is $10m more expensive right now and will get a 5-year max deal this upcoming offseason. Parker would've been locked in on a rookie contract for years. If we thought we needed a scoring punch at the 4 that could stretch the floor we should not have drafted Andrew Wiggins.

So the jury is still out on the pick as far as I'm concerned. And yes, I wanted Wiggins, even before Embiid was injured.

Not really fair to say we shouldn't give Griffin credit for some of this stuff..

Eh.. Griffin hasn't really done anything but interview coaches. Most of the things you're giving him credit for were really Gilbert's decisions. Until he makes a great trade (Chris Grant style) or drafts a player (we fucked up the second round completely) why heap the praise on?

Griffin hasn't even started a single season as the official GM of the Cavaliers yet. Let's give it time. I'm hopeful.

So Griffin is basically a lock for GM of the year.
