Diet and Workout Routines

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So i weighed in @ 160s and then I went to India for 3 weeks. No gym there, no running around or anything, just home cooked food - I come back here and weigh myself in the gym - 148 lbs.

Diet is everything if you are trying to lose weight. Oh one thing I helped when i was in India was I did not have any cravings for sweets and hence did not eat any.

Calories in vs Calories out is all it is. You literally can not gain wait if you take in less energy than you use. So many people get caught up in "ok do i do 5 reps or 6 reps? Run X distance vs Y, what 'superfoods' lose the love handles?" That they forget its simple physics.

Glad you acomplished what you wanted

if by "so many people" you mean "damn near everyone" then yes. how often does an overweight person - much less massively obese person - come up with some bs excuse. this diet doesn't work. i am different. i can't lose weight.

it's not effing rocket science (tho it technically is science :chuckles:)

what exercises will help me get toned? rage rage rage. that one isn't as prevalent but similarly awful.

So my girlfriend has me trying something called the 5/2 diet or intermittent fasting.

Essentially, I can eat and live the way I normally do for 5 days a week. Then two days a week, I drop to 600 calories for the day. This is supposed to be a quarter of your daily intake, but my regular intake is probably more like 3500-4000 calories a day.

I eat a light breakfast, around 100 calories, then 12 hours before I eat my 500 calorie dinner.

So far, I've done it for two weeks and I can't tell if it's working, but I'm down 6-10 pounds. I was at the doctor and weighed in at 6'2" 210, and then about 213 a few days later on our freight scale at work. Since the two weeks, I weighed in at 204 on the freight scale the other day.

It's hard as fuck and you have to pick you calories wisely. It's been a greek yogurt for breakfast, water and black coffee for the next 12 hours. Then a dinner. Had a filling two, 1/4 pound veggie black bean burgers and a ton of asparagus. I am completely tired and starving these days. So I take one sudafed during the day, for allergies and energy, and a clonazepam at night to take my mind off the starvation.

The nice thing is the days can be completely flexible. I played volleyball for about 2 1/2 hours straight the other day so I ate that day and the next, then did my fast day after that. I also get to eat and live however I want for the 5. Drinking, eating bad food, not really caring. Once I hit target weight, I go to 6/1 for maintenance.

This seems to go against everything I have read and know about diet and the body. I have always read that when you want to start a diet that you should fast for 24 hrs because it shrinks your stomach and makes you want to eat less. The being only 2 days thing makes it easier to follow. I've tried adkins and can't stay living without carbs. I can't imagine eating healthy all the time, but I could live like this for a while.

I'll keep posting the results, but I am still shocked by the idea behind it. Seems to go against everything I know. Girlfriend swears by it though as she was getting back on it. When we met, she was fit as hell. As close to a six pack without being too toned for a chick. She's getting back on it because we've been doing the dinner circuit and I cook for her a lot, she's not gotten fat by any means, but wants to get back to ridiculously toned and she says this is how she did it.

Down 6 in two weeks so far.

ive researched it before but forget what i learned, whats the point of this? i thought it was that you can only eat a given amount until your stomach is full, so even if you go full out for 4 hours of the day, its only so much and you starve the rest of the day.. but this is eating for days, etc...

I used to do something like what you just wrote but the opposite, and I got pretty fat

Huh?

Nothing to do with being full, just cutting calories to 600 for the day and 12 hours between two meals that day. Decided on 100 first then 500 second

IF I do the opposite, I will get skinny?

if you don't like the super low calorie days, there are more common IF alternatives that can be easier to handle. basically you condense everything into a single day and just repeat that all week. teh two main plans are 16/8 and 20/4, so it'd be 16hr fast with an 8hr eating window.

i personally don't do it, mostly because it'd be a huge PITA with my schedule (or i'd have to do closer to 20/4 which f that). i would like to tho, hoping it is more feasible in the future.

I've always thought the 5/2 diets best impact was adjusting peoples appetites. Most people, myself especially, eat more due to routine than hunger. The fast days help reduce that routine. I think thats their greatest impact. From what i understand the starvation days, biologyically, are not that effective. During those days cortisol is much higher which results in the calories you take in the following day have a much higher chance of being stored as fat (that seems to fit with evolutionary logic). I have some work friends who do it and it works so keep it up!

Yeah, that's the part that didn't make sense was the starvation days training your body to store fat. That's the way I always understood it to work biologically.

Good to hear from someone else that it works as I had never heard about it from anyone other than my girlfriend.

I am thinking about doing it today, but I already missed breakfast. Is it too much to fast the whole day minus a 600 calorie meal?

So the only girl I ever really considered dating in college just got in touch with me randomly. We hadn't talked in over 2 years. She told me that she basically does nothing but work and workout right now.

Anyway I'm thinking of using "getting in shape for my buddy's wedding" as an excuse to try and hit it again.

This is the girl who once blew me in the bathroom of a church group party after shotgunning some beers. Definitely going to pursue and tell her she's my "trainer." That means I should be starting to work out again soon :chuckles: I'll post results of both goals.

Anyway, what cheap meals should I be eating while I do this?

4chicken breasts, 1/2 jar of salsa & a dash of taco seasoning. Throw it in the crockpot on low 6-8 hours. Shred when cooked, then wrap with brown rice black beans and whatever else you like. Should cost you ~$10 for 4-6 meals.

I've had this one Jillian workout video for almost 2 years, and I only did levels 1 & 2. Today I did level 3. I figured after my weekend of eating 2 Brownie Obsessions, I'd need to work it off. This particular workout had me doing single leg mountain climbers, squat jumps, and other painful lower body exercises.

Tomorrow is going to be interestingly painful.

My workout for the day has been building a desk for my mother. She recently moved to a smaller house since my sister and I have both moved out. She didn't need the big place anymore and wanted to downsize. Anyway I've been building this desk she ordered and I swear to god it came straight from Hell.

I'm not even halfway finished with it yet and I'm on step 42. I forgot to mention that each step has sub parts.

Are you my girlfriend? She basically does that except she adds more than a dash of taco seasoning. Let me tell you, it is Damn good.

Quick, cheap meals for me is I go to the local market-store and get 1lb. of fresh sliced turkey/chicken and I buy low-carb wraps (tomato basil/garden veggie, etc..) throw some lettuce in it and it's a quick wrap. Still get a tiny bit of carbs to feel full and it will last you a good 6-7 lunches/quick wrap snacks (depending if you are trying to lose (lunch) or a quick snack (bulk)) Also buy my fruit/berries from there. Apples are fucking ginormous and are cheap as hell. Plus it's helping a local place other than a shitty Wal-Mart or Kroger.

I have recently been buying bulk meals, kind of what FiveT said, and I cook a bunch of chicken at one time, shred it or chunk it and I have a stock pile for the whole week. I cook the veggies as well and then you don't have to worry about cooking..Brown rice/peas/hard boil eggs so you can have a quick pop or protein.

It's easy, it just sucks the day you do it b/c it will kill like 2 hours.

I have been cutting on carbs recently and have dropped 8lbs in 3 weeks from doing Insanity MAX on/off. But now since my marathon is 8 weeks away, it is time to start lifting/running and eating more carbs. Wanted to do InsanityMAX to get my leg strength back up and now the hard part comes. Running :thumbdown
