Diet and Workout Routines

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
yeah, fuck running.

This is how I felt for most of my youth- 'I will run when my life is in danger.' For me, it was the combination of knee/back pain and exercise induced asthma that would set me off. What got me going was learning about pose running style- forefoot running that eliminate the shock of heel striking while running. It is also a much more efficient form of running. Made a world of difference for me. Went from huffing and puffing through 3/4ths of a mile to working myself up to a half marathon last year. I only get occasional knee pain, and that is when my form breaks down. Correct my form, knee pain goes away. Only prob is working through calf pain that crops up as I add mileage, but that is from using minimalist shoes too. Just a thought. From someone who once felt the same way about running :chuckles:

You cant have crossfit as a group accepting all these bullshit gyms and promoting bullshit science and then defend them as being legit because there is a VERY small percentage of people that do fitness correctly under the name of crossfit.

Ive seen their recruitment videos, its mostly middle aged dudes who are trying to relive their fraternity days of being a part of a group of peers and having something to brag about. FFS the dude who invented it is on video preaching about eating a clean diet void of toxins and then drinks a fucking coke a cola.

i went through so much pain googling "crossfit memes"

so many stupid acronyms, jesus. and of course they all overlay the VERY few jacked crossfitters "look at this guy cleaning 350 pounds! THATS crossfit!"

the WORST is everyone "has a friend that does crossfit, he does it to train for MMA and hes bigger than you bodybuilders are" like yeah, sure they are, cool story[/QUO

I didn't realize we were into the anti-CrossFit portion of the forum; however, I was going to recommend that you drop into a nearby CF Affiliate to help you with your power cleans. Many (not all, so do your research) CF gyms have coaches that have taken the USA Weightlifting Coaches Course; I've also taken it, and it is a very worthwhile weekend class. Not sure where you live, but I might be able to direct you to a place.

The concept of CrossFit is sound; like everything else, the people usually ruin it. Just like the influx of douchebags happened in the sport of triathlon about ten years ago, we've all been seeing the same thing on a greater scale with CF. Add to that, you only need a weekend 'cert' and three grand, and boom you can start your own CF gym.

You bring up a great point- just look at the trainer's credentials. Most list them on their boxes' website or just ask. Most of the ones I have met were personal trainers before hand, were experienced power lifters, college athletes, etc. And maybe it is just me, but I think the failure rate of so many of the early boxes has started to kill the 'weekend and a grand (sure as HELL wasn't 3k when we chipped in for my brother to go). A bad CF coach will not be able to maintain their clientele. Like you would with a doctor, dentist, chiropractor, etc., you look at the qualifications of the person you are trusting with your body. Simple as that.

And yeah, the douche bag factor in CrossFit has jumped, but that unfortunately comes with the territory. Makes me glad I don't go to a commercial box (although Cleveland has some good ones).

Certainly not 'bullshit' science- CrossFit stresses being evidence-based, and their journal backs up what they teach. In the 3 years I have done it, training methods have trained and improved considerably and adapt when new data comes out. Same with the diet. The Paleo folks are way too zealous for my tastes, but to each their own- the basis is sound, reducing/eliminating processed carbs and sugars and adding healthy fats. That goes for most diets.

Again, I can only speak from personal experience- I went from a sedentary lifestyle in my late 20s to functionally fit, as the phrase goes. I'm not professional and I'm not about to clean 300 lbs but I difference it has made for me is night and day, something I never got just going to the gym and f'ing around. I have met far more friendly folks with healthy lifestyles through CrossFit than I have the douche bags- but then again I was doing it before it became popular so not sure. I missed the douche bag brigade I guess.

I'm not trying to hate on it THAT much, you obviously like it a lot and it works for you which is awesome, so im gonna walk away from it :)

I live in Orlando, but I have roots in Avon Lake. If any of you guys are in Cleveland I can wholeheartedly recommend Coca Crossfit in North Ridgeville (especially for help with Oly lifts AuxPie), and CrossFit Bingo in Sheffield Village. Judging from my somewhat defensive tone, I was deeply into CF a couple years ago, before the boom. That said, I am still pretty well-connected with gym owners all over the US; let me know if you want to find a legit place near you, and I will do my best.

Aside from the random CF competition I get roped into once a year, my own programming is Oly lifts/squats/short sprints/throwing sports/some gymnastics stuff; no WODs. I am almost middle-aged (39 next week) , except I do have a >300# clean :) Like you said, we can agree to disagree on this forum. Also, I have written programs for athletes of various goals (triathlons, mud runs, CrossFit, FFs getting back into shape, weight loss, cutting for a fitness competition), and I am willing to do it gratis for just about anyone. It's something I enjoy doing, no strings.

Having said that....let's get another power clean/Deadlift video up here, to see if you have corrected things!

ill try to tomorrow for deadlifting, my lifting partner's been busy today and tomorrow..ill try propping my phone up on a weight or something

also a 300 pound clean is fuckin gnarly

lol thanks.

Use one of those metal clips for weights as an anchor for your phone to shoot videos; turn it upside down and most phones sit perfectly on it.

anyone know if any of those posture correctors work

i think half the reason i have a belly is because my posture sucks

I was once told that my back had the curve of a middle aged jamacan woman by a physio. always gives me a belly although as I've dropped bf it's looked better. Have to walk with better posture now to look better but also to avoid back problems. don't have any orthotics etc... All down to retraining and stretching

I met a guy who does yoga, almost daily. I thought I knew some things (i.e. hybrid yoga style). He told me that he can do a tripod handstand from crow pose, back into crow. .... I'm never going to workout with this guy. I just learned that I could hold the crow pose for a few seconds. I was so proud of myself, and then he killed my joy.

I dont know what any of that means, but I've thought of joining a yoga class. Seems like a good thing to do, easy way to meet chicks, although it may give off a ghey vibe.

Any of you tried "power yoga" (ashtanga variant)? I've heard good things in terms of it being a kick ass workout.

It means that his core is strong. He's pretty fit/lean. I never thought I'd meet a guy who did yoga well. I always wanted to see what it was like at a yoga studio. I just know not to go to the one he goes to.
