Diet and Workout Routines

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My gym is doing an 8 week weight loss challenge, winner gets $500. I joined and figured I'd try out the keto diet for 8 weeks to see what some of the hype was about. I had read that the first week or two could be a tough adjustment period while working out, so I started it last Wednesday. Weigh-in's are today. I knew that keto worked for some people, but I didn't realize it worked this fast. I've dropped like 8 pounds in the last week, I know it's mostly water weight but I feel like an idiot now for starting the diet too early before the weigh-in.

@David. @Pick6 I saw in historical posts you guys both tried it and had some pretty good things to say about it, what made you stop? I feel like I'm never hungry anymore, and I'm eating bacon, eggs, steaks, veggies, etc. I also feel way more alert in the mornings, and have energy all day. I'm not sure if this is just a placebo or what, but I definitely feel way better than I did even a few weeks ago.
I felt the opposite, eating only protein did not make me feel more satieted and my energy was low.

Everyone is different

I think it's supposed to be the fat that helps with the satiety, at least that's what I've read everywhere. Hit your protein goals, and eat fat to satiety. I'm surprised to hear you say that, you posted this in 2017 that made it seem like you had a similar experience as mine:

"I 100% stand behind this diet. It is incredibly easier to get full and stay full. the food is fine, basically just what I was eating before.. but instead of protein bars (that left me hungry an hour later, bc its just not satiating), I eat a few hardboiled eggs (costco). Instead of turkey burgers, I eat a bag of stirfried veggies with the burger cut up.

Full as fuck. all day. feel really good."

There are still carbs in veggies and it takes too many of them to keep full

And I needed. Simple carbs for enough energy for the gym

I'd rather over eat and hit my macros and run for 45 minutes

I started that diet last January to lose weight I'd put on from my wife's (very good)) cooking, and after hurting my foot/foot surgery. Fucking fantastic.

First, I lost a shitload of weight I'd put on from not being very mobile. 65 pounds.

Second, like you, I just felt/feel much better in terms of health and energy level. After the first few months, I stopped "counting carbs", and did it more by what I wouldn't eat. No bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, sugar, or milk/ice cream. I go easy on the fruit although I'll have some once in a while.

I think the real trick for me wasn't just eating all that protein and fat, but actually eating more vegetables and salads. I honestly think my diet is healthier now and that I'm getting more vitamins/minerals. It may not be as strict keto now because of the veggies, but it works well to maintain.

If I'm out with my wife or friends, I'll relax that so that I can eat more of what is in the restaurant or someone's house. But I stick to it pretty closely at home, and I can maintain my weight very easily now. No more of that Omeprazole for heartburn, either.

Congrats on the success so far! The first week is the hardest, IMO.

The reason I stopped is just due to convenience. I've done a good job of keeping some principles since the diet. Keto lunches, diet pop, occasional bacardi rum & diet for alcohol instead of beer or something sugary. Funny you bring this up today. My waistline has been a little tighter with all the craziness and eating of the holidays. Me and the woman are actually starting on it this weekend. Unsure how long I will do it this time...goal is at least 3 weeks, but i don't want to lose too much weight! I don't believe I've ever weighed over 185 in my life, so I don't really have much to lose.

When I was your age and single, that worked fine for me as well. Problem for some of us is that as we get older, or break down from working out, or don't have the same time because of work/kids, it is very difficult to control weight just by exercising.

My body is shit dude, I'm literally always hurt.

Finding the time can be difficult. I work 50 hours and spend another on the dog everyday but you're right I don't have a family and have significant autonomy over my schedule and work split shifts

The trick is to find recipes/reliable things that you really like, and keep the stuff on hand to make them. It helps if they're simple. I keep a couple bags of romaine lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, and dressing on hand. If I'm hungry, I can make a good size salad in about 60 seconds. I can't eat tuna, but if you can, you can crack open a can and toss some in there.

I also usually make meals that can last a few days, then there are the leftovers in the fridge for if I'm hungry. There are some pretty good websites out there with recipes if you want to get fancy, but I generally go for simple stuff that doesn't take much time. Though I made some really good keto pulled pork not long ago. Made about 10 pounds and froze some so it was there when I needed it.

5'8. Started at 262. So...really, really fat. 175ish now. Excess skin at the bottom of my stomach but not much I can really do about it outside of surgery. Women don't seem to care, so I don't really either.

183 to 189 in 5 days.

Should be minimum glycogen bc I was on cycle at 183

That's awesome man! How did you do it Rich? I'm at the point mentally where I'm sick of where I am physically but I don't have the will power to follow through on diet and exercise consistently.

Man of the cloth?
This whole time in his posts, I pictured him as a white Ty Lue clone in his 40s. But good for him losing all that weight! That is a great accomplishment.

Doing some intermittent fasting the last couple of weeks and noticing a major difference in my body.

Running a marathon and Ironman this year and usually operate better around 185-190lbs. It's not something that I will do long term, but has definitely helped me drop some unwanted pounds.

195. That happened really quickly. 183 last Thursday. Hitting macros, keeping 400 over maintenance every day. I hope I keep at least some of that shit man. Deflating sucks.
