Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

I probably over-romanticize the "high motor" persona, but I can't help be a little disappointed by some of the little things I've seen from this young cat...lazy closeouts, no effort to rebound or get back in transition, Etc. I don't buy the thought that effort should be relative to the importance of the game, and I really hope its just the extra lb's sapping his energy, in which case I would have no worries. Scott will take good care of that.

I love his playmaking ability, nice to know he can run some more than adequate PG. Two great ball handlers who can drive and dish + two extremely mobile bigs with jumpshots...tailor made for the Princeton. I believe in you D-Dub.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

I'm confused. Did someone declare that Dion was going to be a bust off of two pre-season games?

If you look at these games objectively you're going to see some red flags. They're not going to go away until Dion makes them go away.

And if you don't think Dion cares, you're wrong:

He said this on Twitter before the 2nd game: "Imma snap tomorrow forsure."

He said this today: "Dedication + Sacrifice = Success."

That doesn't sound to me like someone who doesn't care about how he performs in summer league.

Exactly. I see some areas of concern right now and I expect him to show that he's better than he has. However, until he plays better I have the right to be skeptical as a fan. I'm not declaring this kid a bust, but I am declaring my own worries haha..

(DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT SAYING DION WILL BE A LATE BLOOMER AFTER TWO SUMMER LEAGUE GAMES)

Now, it takes some time for top draft picks to get comfortable and figure out their role on a team. Look at a guy like Chauncey Billups...he was a 3rd overall pick, but it took 7 years for him to fully establish himself. I in no way am already making assumptions on how Dion will pan out, or even how he will do this season, but for people to already say he his a bust ALREADY is fucking ridiculous.

People in this thread over-dramatize and over-react like a bunch of teenage girls with PMS.

Take a few deep breaths into a paper bag, and relax. It's way early, much too early to make any judgments on any players.

Got summer league numbers for Billups? Were there reports he came in out of shape, didn't try on defense, that his shooting form seemed off, that he was struggling to finish?

In his first NBA game he scored 15 pts and dished out 4 assists on 50% shooting with 2 steals in just 17 minutes. By mid november he'd had games where he dished out 9 and 8 assists, and a game where he scored 22 pts buried 3 out of 6 3's and even went to the line 10 times.

You can't expect consistency from a young player, and it takes time for PGs to learn how to run a team. So Billups had plenty of duds, but even the poster boy for late bloomers showed glimpses of what he'd become in just his first month in the league. That's what good players do.

Yes. I suggest you do that.

Summer league didn't start until 2004, but I see your point. I am fully on board the Dion will be an above average player train, and at this point we've seen plenty of glimpses of the future from him. He's had a few great drive and finishes that no one seems to be talking about.

My point is that if you take a guy who knows he's good and put him on the court with mostly scrubs in a game that doesn't matter one bit, there's no way in hell you are going to get his best.

Godamn. good point, I just hope the FO has the patience to give him 4+ years to grow. But you see how quick teams were overlooking him. If feel like with a high pick you are thrown auto expectations and if you don't meet them many GMs are quick to let you go (presumably before the player's value plummets and you can sell his 'potential')

If he ends up making An All-NBA or All Defensive team then I don't care how long it takes him.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Assuming you do believe he is a bust after two essentially d-league pre-season games, its harder to fault the cavs for the pick because everyone that should have went ahead of him did based on the metrics and intangibles people placed on him. It isn't like the cavs took TT and left Jonas on the board, for arguments sake, so I don't see how people can be amazingly disappointed with the pick. Arguably only Barnes I guess could be brought up.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

You can see why the Cavs were so high on this kid. The doom & gloomers out there crying about Waiters are what I label the "pitch-fork crowd". Every city has them.

Once his shot starts going down and he's on the court with Kyrie... he's going to be electric.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Just joined the forum. I am a native Clevelander who also went to college up at Syracuse. So, I follow the 'Cuse and the Cavs very closely.

People should not worry too much about Dion. Having seen him play essentially every game over the last 2 years, I can tell you, he just had two bad games. He actually turned into quite a solid shooter in his second year. I would chalk this up more to random statistics than him not being able to shoot. Having said that, he certainly benefits from a tough coach who will tell him how it is. I think Byron is absolutely perfect for Dion and really believe he will thrive next year. The kid is beaming with confidence--to his own detriment on games where his shot his off (like the last 2). Normally, he is quite a consistent player..really only having a couple bad games last year out of 30+ (one being OSU of course).

No need to overreact, because the light will turn on at some point (probably in the next few games) and everyone will see the potential they keep hearing about. Even though he did not start, he was by easily the best player on Syracuse last year. That team was one of the best ever at 'Cuse (barring Melo's suspension). I have total faith in Dion and I am not a total 'Cuse homer either. I never thought Flynn or Wesley Johnson would be good NBA players, but it was blatantly obvious with Waiters.

Re: Welcome Dion Waiters

Waiters seems to be what I expected so far. I love his elite burst to get into the lane. He desperately needs to work on his jumper, which we already knew. His stroke doesn't look terrible. I bet if took more pull up mid range jumpers instead of step back 3s he would be more successful. He needs to work on finishing in traffic. He needs to get in shape, play defense, and take better shots. If he does that then he could be the all star we hope he will be. If not then he won't.
