All of those things can tell you how a player currently is. Not so much what their potential could be in the future...
What tells you about their future then? Pixie dust? You have to observe how they play through those numbers, charts and film break down, and if major improvement is impossible based on style of play, talent, attitude, physical attributes, etc.. You don't have to watch every minute of every game to see this stuff.

I'm not saying any of the media has actually gone through this process. Most big name national media wouldn't, you're going to find these types of breakdowns and statistical observations from bloggers, but it's ridiculous to believe you can't give a rational and educated opinion on a player's future if you don't watch 99% of their games.

One example would be with dion is his first step. Stats don't show his elite first step to the hoop, it just shows his percentages at the hoop.

Jesus Dion, why are you not more of an athlete?

He does not have the athleticism to be a superstar - Nate Duncan

Why does his athleticism get questioned? Why has it ever? When he was chubby in his rookie year Summer League, his first step was still off the charts.

He's got a lightning quick first step, he's fast, and he's got great hops. His athleticism isn't and will never be an issue. Whoever Nate Duncan is, he proved to me that his opinion is baseless right there.

He's back!

The more pressing question is why a player's athleticism, or lack of, is such a determining factor when it comes to projecting said player's ceiling. Plenty examples of players whom are wildly successful today even though they don't possess elite athleticism. To doubt Dion will ever become a star because he doesn't have elite athleticism or an automatic jumper is just lazy analysis.

Damn I hate idiot media members...

i think because he has trouble finishing around the rim many people assume that he's not very athletic...

I have to say his left hand looks a lot better this year and he's seems more confident in that shot as the year progresses, particularly going high off the glass. If he can improve and start using ittle teardrop shot in as well, I think his finishing inside will start improving pretty significantly.

The biggest thing that I still haven't seen him learn is that he's got to better at drawing fouls. Needs to learn to get his body in between him and defender and bowl over the defender if he is out of position to force the ref to make a call. His efficiency will look a lot better if instead of screaming AND 1, he gets to go to the line more.

is he really that far off of a prime Dwayne Wade as far as athleticism?? Personally, I love this guy. I love his attitude, I love the fire. As he matures, I think this will manifest itself into one of the greatest wills to win in the NBA.

Add to it he doesn't do all that dramatic flailing around and crashing to the floor when he gets fouled.

By athleticism they must be talking about how high he gets off the floor. He can jump, but he doesn't get quite as high as Wade did back in the day or other wing players, but he is also a little shorter than many of them. That's probably why get gets that rep. Other than that, quickness, speed, strength, he is as good an athlete as anyone else.

I was at the game last night, and it was pretty evident that Dion was the fastest player on the floor. Also, Kawhi Leonard is build like a small forward version of Bennett in that he is a chiseled tank.

I was under the basket right on the court last night and honestly dion looked like the best athlete on the floor and it was not even close at all
