Dwight Powell - F/C (signed)

Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

I think we get more Cap relief by getting the 3 M exception than we did from the original trade. I think now we have a true max slot and a little extra.

I'd like to see Powell play. He looks a little skinny, but his shot and athleticism are intriguing. With the athleticism on the team, the opposing team would have to have some amazing post play to negate our advantages.

I'd consider Nazr Mohammed for a backup to guard hulking centers. He was always serviceable. No idea what his play is like now at his age though.

So a recap...

Hopson to Charlotte for Brendan Haywood and the rights to Dwight Powell
Gee to NOLA for LAC's 2016 2nd round pick (top 55 protected, there are 60 picks per draft). Cle also gets a 3 million dollar trade exemption.

I've never heard of top 55 protection, it sort of sounds funny.

Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

I think he will be at least as good as Tyler Zeller. His junior year was outstanding, not sure what happened to him as a senior where he took a step back but I think he is much better than the middle of the 2nd round where he was taken.

Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

As someone who has closely watched Stanford basketball for 20 years--including the last four with Powell, I appreciate the optimism in this thread. While there is a chance that Powell will be as good or better than Zeller (there's always a chance) that's far from a foregone conclusion.

Here's the difference and the concern: Zeller kept making leaps each of us his four years in college. Powell didn't. He started better than Zeller as a frosh then actually backslid his soph year. Then Powell made a big jump his junior year -- but Zeller made an even bigger one. Then senior year, Zeller continued to improve while Powell backslid for the second time in four years.

When it come to projecting NBA success, you like to see a fairly steady upward ascent. Zeller showed that, which is why he was a first round pick and Powell was never considered a first rounder by anyone.

Powell is just hard to figure. There's lots of possible explanations, some of which might bode well for his NBA future and some not as much. Until Dwight can put together two or more consecutive upward/improving seasons, however, I'm loath to count on him for anything...except maybe some garbage/filler minutes. The NBA is littered with the corpses of highly talented fellas who never quite put it together.

It's all about skill set here. College and European players are brought into the NBA on the regular to fit needs. Powell hopefully strokes the ball well enough to keep a roster spot. Is he Channing Frye? No. Could he be a respectable pick and pop guy off the bench providing depth? I think so.... The NBA really values spacing which Dwight can provide. He could be a solid piece off the bench which this team will need with the loss if Zeller. Assumption is Brendan Haywood is done...

Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

His senior year stat line was very unimpressive. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone with those stats in college who ever amounted to anything in the NBA...53% TS, 8.5 Rebounds/40 MP, etc. He was a bit better his junior year.

DX gives some reasons for his bad year. But he turns 23 next week, and he isn't about to develop NBA-level basketball skills/instincts at this point.

The $3M exception fills the gap so we have the max only left if we don't renounce it. The means LeBron signs officially and we have the Room MLE and the vet minimums instead of needing to spend money to get there.

The LeBron deal will probably go on the cap Monday, when the NBA offices open (if it is all signed). Then expect Wiggins to get signed not long after that. Miller and Allen may go for vet minimums (as might Birdman). That Room MLE could be used for someone else. Ed Davis? There are many options, including giving Harris and Powell three year deals.

Dwight Powell reminds me of Ryan Hollins. He looks slightly terrified. He is very springy. He plays like a puppy on a linoleum floor. Hope he has fun in the D-League.

Re: #45: Dwight Powell - F/C - Stanford University (Traded to CLE)

A little harsh for someone who has had one practice with the team and has played a combined total of four minutes :chuckles:

Yeah, really.

I know it’s the hip thing to do to tear down our bigs in their rookie years (Zeller, Bennett, and now Powell), but I’m going to wait and hold out judgment on Powell because it usually takes big men 2-3 years to adjust to the NBA.
